Orange Walk

Glasgow city centre ground to a halt today, with most of the streets closed to traffic between 9am and 4pm, so that a bunch of bigots could celebrate a war that happened over 300 years ago. There were loads of tourists in town, taking photos and video of the "parade", not knowing the background. And worse than the marchers, are the hangers-on - many of them drunk and with small children who are waving flags for something they know nothing about. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be Scottish. Angry

Ah there we go. It didn't take long. All those opposed to independence are members of an orange lodge. Hmm

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 10:18

What's not to like? Intimidation, drunkenness, general bigotry, targeting of Catholics/anyone they deem a catholic, being woken up by pompous twats with their silly little flutes at 8am, having to keep my kids inside because they roar abuse at anyone known to be catholic, having to listen to the utter bile spouted before, during and after the walk, the violence afterwards, the stretched resources of the police and emergency services. Oh and the fact that they're all fucking bigots.

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 10:19

And for the record, I'm pro Indy and even I know that not all people opposed to independence are Orangemen (thank fuck), most of them aren't bigoted at all, they just have a different view to me.

MoreProseccoNow · 03/07/2017 10:41

And don't forget what happens if you cross the March - got forbid you may have to cross your own street....

trixymalixy · 03/07/2017 10:53

I remember as a child of about 9 trying to cross one with my aunt as we were going to miss our train.

One guy in the match grabbed me so hard he left a bruise and dragged me back. Imagine doing that to a child?!

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 12:41

My BIL made a passing comment about a walk going past, he said "there's no need for that bigotry in this day and age". No swearing, nothing offensive and he was standing in my front garden with me and DP. Both men were wearing Celtic tops. We had 4, yes 4 coppers come to the door asking for him and to berate him for making that comment. Until I pointed out that DP is ex-Army and among the rights he and his friends fought for was freedom of speech. I hate the shite that this poison spreads.

ItsNachoCheese · 03/07/2017 13:13

I got told from from my ex's family who are celtic fans that if im a rangers fan i stand with the OO which is a lot of shite. Yeah im a rangers fan and me and my ds have a rangers top but that doesnt mean i agree with marching to spout sectarianist shite in my town

MeanAger · 03/07/2017 14:03

Tbf notreallyarsed if you're standing out watching an orange march go past in Celtic shirts you aren't exactly being a shrinking violet! I suspect your BIL and DP were trying to make a point.

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 14:23

Actually mean we'd just got out of the car after a day out at the football but don't let that stop you making assumptions.

MeanAger · 03/07/2017 16:28

I suppose he whispered the comment too?

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 18:46

He didn't yell it, he said it to DP as we were in the garden. I was halfway up the steps into the house and heard him, but the police were maybe 6 feet away and clearly looking to make a point. Wouldn't be like the police in the west of Scotland if you're not a Proddy. Grin

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 18:47

And if they have the right to pollute my airspace with their pathetic bigoted shite I'm damned sure my BIL has the right to comment in a non aggressive way that there's no need for it in this day and age. Which there isn't.

MeanAger · 03/07/2017 19:57

He said it 6 feet away from the police wearing a Celtic shirt during an orange march! Grin he was feeling playful that's for sure! I can see he wasn't being provocative and what he said was perfectly fine. You can see how it sounds like a bit of a likely story though can't you? With the shirts especially! Grin

MeanAger · 03/07/2017 19:57

I totally agree with him BTw!

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 20:20

To be fair you're right, it did sound worse when I wrote it down. They deliberately march down our road because it's predominantly catholic and we were pissed off to have been caught up in it coming home. The response was waaaaaay over the top though. If he'd sworn or shouted anything I'd have told him off myself, but his response was quite measured given the shit storm we'd encountered coming home.

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 20:21

I just wish that both Orange walks and the Hibs equivalent were consigned to the past. All they do is encourage hatred and violence and drunken ridiculousness. Ugh.

Notreallyarsed · 03/07/2017 20:24

And Mean I'm sorry for my prickly response, I'm so used to being got at by pro orange people I see it everywhere.

MoreProseccoNow · 03/07/2017 20:49

Whilst we're on the subject, it's nonsense that we have separate Catholic/non-denominational schooling - I think it helps perpetuate the bigotry & is divisive. I wonder if it will change in my lifetime.

MeanAger · 03/07/2017 20:56

And Mean I'm sorry for my prickly response

It's fine. It's a prickly topic. Fwiw I'm not in any way pro orange order. I was brought up catholic (I'm atheist now) in a quite republican family. I'm not nationalist nor unionist. I just saw "they were in their front garden wearing Celtic shirts" and thought "oh well that's not going to go unnoticed! At an orange march!" Grin because there are people who would do that deliberately. I know people who would do that.

trixymalixy · 04/07/2017 09:05

I totally agree Moreprosecco. Religion should have no place in schools.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 04/07/2017 09:15

Whilst we're on the subject, it's nonsense that we have separate Catholic/non-denominational schooling

YY. I keep hoping ScotGov will just take religion out of schools completely, but I know that's a really big deal. The problem is that even though the church has little relevance in most folks lives, they seem to wield a disproportionate amount of power.

MrsJayy · 04/07/2017 09:23

There is one local to us this weekend and another next weekend (I think) it makes my skin crawl they dont walk through our village anymore they are banned apparently they drummed louder outside the catholic church and were intimidating . Unionist and anti independence my arse. I am prodestant and have been raised in this shite I hate them

rogueantimatter · 04/07/2017 11:42

A young adult I know very well walked across one of the marches. I was Shock and didn't know what to say. I would welcome any advice for her.

ItsNachoCheese · 04/07/2017 11:48

mrsjayy theres a big one in alloa this saturday im dreading it

DoctorDonnaNoble · 04/07/2017 11:51

I'm sure there are more of these than there used to be. They are bloody intimidating. Does anyone know if there are any marches planned for next month or are they all in July? We're visiting various relatives in August and the Orange Order are the last thing I want to come across (pregnant, emotional and Catholic).
