I think I’ve just caught my husband cheating

DH is working from home and I was doing the housework, I walked upstairs as a jet went over the house so it was really loud. We don’t live on a flight path so it was unusual. I went into his office and he literally jumped out of his skin and pressed the X to hide a teams message on screen. I asked about the jet just as another message popped up on teams from a woman called Joanna - he scrabbled to press the X again as fast as possible and was as red as a beetroot. The message said “yeah, it looked better in my head hahaha”.

His whole demeanour had changed and looked hugely guilty and caught out. I asked who he was messaging to which he said no one, i again asked who it was and he said a man from work - i told him i saw it was from a woman called Joanna. I asked why he was acting like this and looking so guilty and lying - he said it’s because he knew how I’d react. I am well aware he works in a mixed team and have never taken any issue to him having work conversations with other women so this is completely gas lighting on his part. I told him this was bull shit and to bring up the messages, he refused. I asked again and he locked his screen then picked up his mobile - he has teams on his phone so I am assuming he was deleting the messages. I asked if that’s what he was doing and he dug his heels in and shouted that there is nothing going on. I told him to prove it by showing the messages, he repeatedly refused and told me no as he didn’t feel he should have to prove himself, and then wouldn’t make eye contact with me.

if that was me and the conversation was innocent, I’d have brought up the messages and demanded an apology. Everything about him screamed red flag during that situation.

ive left the house and am currently in my car in a park, shaking and feeling sick. There surely can’t be any other explanation for his reaction and refusal to prove himself innocent?

we’ve never been in a situation like this, I’ve not had any cause to doubt him in the past. Been together for 15years.

Discussing your personal medical status is unforgivable. My husband discussed deeply personal and traumatic things about me with the OW. Then again with his girlfriend after I left him over something else, even though he knew how much it hurt. More than the sex tbh which hurt so much it has mentally and physically changed me forever, so a lot.

Might just be a “work wife” scenario and he got embarrassed, doubt he would be able to do anything explicit on teams in a work environment.

‘Work wife’ ffs.

Sorry… he was confiding in her about your gynae surgery? I’d be hitting the roof about this alone!

PopcornKitten · Today 18:47

He’s sent me a message. He’s now saying that the became ‘pally’ a few months ago and she became his confidant. They have discussed personal stuff such as family members who have passed away this year and my gynae surgery. Apparently it’s all innocent and they are just friends.

why would he feel concealing a new found friendship at work with a female colleague who he’s now described as his confidant is acceptable?

‘Becoming his confidant suggests a level of closeness that I wouldn’t be comfortable with particularly as he has failed to disclose the friendship and reacted as he has done.
He knows this woman has become significant to him. He is prepared to see you suffer in order to preserve and protect his relationship with her.
I suspect he will gradually reveal more.
I hope that whilst he is away you are able to reflect more and have some good friends and family to lean on.

His reaction was so completely over the top for an innocent conversation with a female colleague.

he talks a lot about work and I know some of his colleagues, but he’s never mentioned a Joanna. As I said, the message on its own is just a chatty message, but his reaction tells a
very different story.

Yes his reaction is the red flag. He seems to have feelings for Joanna given how red he went, whether or not this is reciprocated/has been acted upon yet. Trust your instinct OP 💖

Ah a case of washing your dirty laundry in public.
I would absolutely not do that and i've seen it happen twice. It's never good.

OP doesn’t need to carry it through just the threat should be enough to see what he spills. At this point he already knows OP doesn’t believe a damn thing he says. He wont want to lose his job so this could trigger some truth to what he has been up to

Opheliamay · Today 18:55

Having spent a bit of time thinking about possible ways in which your gynae problems could have come up in conversation with a relatively new female work “pal” of a few months….. and the only plausible explanation I can’t think of is that he was trying to pull the poor me, my wife isn’t meeting my needs line.

I would ask him to explain how that came into conversation and how the chat went??

havingdoubtsnow · Today 18:56

Gosh, it all sounds very suspicious.

Wrestling67 · Today 18:56

I can’t imagine Teams is the only platform he’s contacting her on.

i also think it’s batshit anyone says anything on a Teams chat that they wouldn’t want their boss to see. Because they can, if they wanted .

If that was my husband who had spoken to someone about my private medical history he would not know what hit him. What is OP’s husband thinking?!? Did he not for 1 minute think what would happen if OP found out? How stupid is he? Such a violation of her privacy! He really needs to be kicked to the kerb OP.

Just keep reiterating that you want the whole log of the messages or his marriage is over.

I think you've done brilliantly, the way you've dealt with it. He's not innocent. BUT if he was, he'd be able to provide the evidence.~

Sending you a virtual hug. XX

Yes and if they are that pally. She won’t mind surely 🤔

Of I find out my DH discussed my gynae issues with anyone at work for chit chat reasons, that would be it, regardless of cheating!!

Hereforadviceee · Today 19:11

My ex did this. She even reached out to me to say I could ask her any questions. She lied while being really sweet to me. Two years later he said he needed space randomly. He had bought a house with the OW and was testing it out before he ended it with me. The deleting messages is what my ex did. You never have peace after that I’m afraid.

Best scenario he just flirted but even then he acted the same as my ex and I can’t help but be pessimistic over a man who blames you with the ‘I know how you would react’ line, my ex said the same.

you know what an innocent person would do, show you everything and cut ties or some action to ease your concern.

He will just delete everything now.

Hereforadviceee · Today 19:12

Have you noticed any thing unusual?. My ex started wearing much more aftershave and finally had the desire to sort his fungal nail issues out as well as a new desire to go to the gym and stayed later at work.

GSDLOVER · Today 19:56

Sorry OP but I would be meeting Joanna after work and asking her WTF she thinks she’s doing sending/accepting flirty messages from my husband, I would also be informing him if he won’t undelete the messages you will be going into his office and speaking to his boss, they must be stored on a server somewhere. I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I’m in a very similar situation. I’ve never been able to prove anything and it suits me to stay for now but it has fucking tortured me for 3 years and I’ll never be able to trust him again and he knows that, wish you all the luck in the world for your family x

And so it starts. There will be more revelations, he's downplaying and attempting to get away with admitting to as little as possible.

You need to decide what you want to happen next, because i don't think you'll get the full truth from him. So you need to decide whether your marriage is over or not and then how to move forward.

Saintsgirl7 · Today 20:01

ThreadGuardDog · Today 06:19

They can’t put them back into the Teams chat though - they can only be stored for records or investigations, so OP wouldn’t have access to them.

Edited

I can assure you they are accessible to use in teams, with a full history of messages.

FujiWisteria · Today 20:09

First of all, I’ve deleted messages on teams before and there is definitely an option to ‘undo delete’ on there. He can, but won’t show you those messages.

Secondly, why the frick is he discussing your gynae issues with this other woman? That’s so bad!

Boreded · Today 20:21

HollyhocksandPeons · Today 13:51

You don't have the right to speak on behalf of that man. You don't know what is happening in his mind - he may be pining after you all these years. As my gran said 'Alte Liebe roestet nie'. Could be like an obedient Labrador - you put the food in front of them, you say 'no, not now'. Does not mean he is not salivating and has eaten it all in his mind twenty times over.

As I said, you can't fuck with biology.

But you’ve spoken on behalf of all men and women?

And he can fuck whoever he wants in his mind 🤷‍♀️

Doubledenim305 · Today 20:21

Sensiblesal · Yesterday 16:20

I’m sorry but you have no right to see his work teams messages. Literally he will have a policy at work saying this.

I mean you have clearly caught him flirting but who knows if its more.

You have to decide if you trust him. You can’t demand to see his work stuff

Oh sensible Sal. No just no.

fivepastmidnight · Today 20:26

Ever since you caught him at the computer - everything he has said and done has been completely shifty. He keeps revealing a little bit more and it all makes him and the situation sounds worse.
How dare he say he knew how you'd act and walk round with a hang dog expression.
if she's his confident - he can confide how he's massively fucked up - upset and pissed off his wife- ruined his marriage - possibly causing himself a divorce - All because he liked getting his ego stroked.

HollyhocksandPeons · Today 20:26

Boreded · Today 20:21

I mean I do t think I’d waste my time finding out tbh because he’s already obviously not reliable and that’s all you need to know.

But you could always message her with something like -

“Hello Joanna, this is Shauns wife, Sorry to disturb you but I thought I better check in with you woman to woman as I noticed my husband was messaging you the other day and then he acted shifty so I asked him what was going on and to show me but he - deleted all the messages. So of course now I’m thinking he’s up to something. I wonder, is there anything I need to know? Apologies for putting you on the spot. Or rather, that he has”.

Be aware that sometimes affair partners will lie though.

You're giving way to much information to a total stranger who may or may not have an affair with your husband. You're telling her you're suspicious but unsure yada yada... I think you need to play your cards smarter. Tell her you know about their 'relationship' and not happy, leave it vague because she might give you some interesting additional information, or she might not reply which is pretty "incriminating".
