Husbands Encrypted WhatsApp with Female Colleague

Hi,

First time post as I don’t know if I’m losing my mind.

My husband is an Airline pilot who is was very popular with the ladies when he was younger. We have 3 adult children. Things are ok between us but he is a charmer. Sex is irregular between us but I suppose that’s the norm when you’re in your 50’s.

He has been travelling frequently with one particular glamorous cabin crew member who I have my suspicions about. She’s married to a nice handsome man who I’ve met and they have 3 children also.

My husband was having a shower this morning I got a chance to check his phone as something wasn’t sitting right with me. I searched her name on WhatsApp and the messages between them are encrypted?? Like what’s that about.

I’ve now checked whats involved in setting up encryption on WhatsApp and both parties have to set it up with one scanning a code on the others phone. Needless to say I’m seriously concerned now.

Has anyone encountered this before and how do you think I should handle this tricky situation?

Im thinking of contacting this woman’s husband but feel that might be a bit much at this point.

Is there any possibility it's because they talk about work and it has to be encrypted as it contains sensitive data? Are you able to check if chats with other colleagues are encrypted?

Kinda feels like I'm clutching at straws though to be honest, I'm sorry but it's probably more likely that he's cheating with her to be honest

Sounds very dodgy.

All WhatsApp messages are end to end encrypted as standard. It’s a feature of WhatsApp that you can’t turn off. My chats with Dh are encrypted. Just how they are. It’s why I have to use WhatsApp sometimes to send secure codes back and forth for work and not our actual in-house email accounts (which IT deems as not secure 🙄). Do you mean they are locked or set to disappearing or something like that?

That happens with every single WhatsApp conversation, he's not set it up specifically.

Are you saying you can't read his messages to and from this woman?

As ex cabin crew sadly that wouldn't be the case.

The WhatsApp FAQs say "All of this happens automatically: no need to turn on any special settings to secure your messages." about end to end message encryption.

All of my messages are encrypted automatically, it's just what WhatsApp does. The codes / QR codes you're talking about are auto generated by WhatsApp, you can compare them to check if your chat is encrypted but you don't set that up yourself.

I am pretty sure it’s automatically done! (I had to redownload WhatsApp and it turned disappearing messages on by default - I haven’t even bothered turning it off yet)

AH yeah reading the other replies has made me realise does it say:

"Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. No one outside of this chat, not even whatsapp, can read or listen to them. Tap to learn more."

If so that appears at the top of every chat on what'sapp, open a new chat with anyone you have never messaged on there and you will see the same.

Probably means they've never messaged each other on whatsapp

Go into any whatsapp chat on your phone and look at the top of the screen.

It will say that the chat is encrypted.

Do you mean the chat is locked? That's possible on WhatsApp- as I understand it both parties have to agree a code to lock it and messages are then hidden.

No, you can lock any of your messages and don't need the other party to agree.

They are by default encrypted.
Unless it is locked, I assume it is he hasn’t messaged her at all OR it was a long time ago. They flag it again after a number of months.

OP all chats are encrypted on whatsapp. That's standard

Are you sure encrypted and not just locked? how would he then access the messages if they have to be unlocked from her phone?

if you mean end to end encryption everyone has that set up but you would still be able to access them on the phone

OP this is how WhatsApp works. He is literally just messaging this colleague.

I'm being thick. Yes whatsapp is encrypted, but anyone can read the messages if they have my phone pin.

The OP may be talking about locked chats. That's an additional feature that you can activate.

No she said the word encrypted.

And if you click into any whatsapp chat, it says "encrypted" at the top

I think she used the wrong phrase. I've just tested it on my chat with my husband and if I go to lock the chat I get this message which is consistent with what she said in the wider description.

Why have you come to the conclusion she's used the wrong phrase? Encryption is standard on WhatsApp, with a banner at the top of new chats stating so. She has not said anything about locked chats, which are an entirely different thing.

A pilot and cabin crew member - what sensitive info could they possibly be discussing.

Sounds like an affair!
