Husbands Encrypted WhatsApp with Female Colleague

Alby678 · 18/01/2025 13:17

Hi,

First time post as I don’t know if I’m losing my mind.

My husband is an Airline pilot who is was very popular with the ladies when he was younger. We have 3 adult children. Things are ok between us but he is a charmer. Sex is irregular between us but I suppose that’s the norm when you’re in your 50’s.

He has been travelling frequently with one particular glamorous cabin crew member who I have my suspicions about. She’s married to a nice handsome man who I’ve met and they have 3 children also.

My husband was having a shower this morning I got a chance to check his phone as something wasn’t sitting right with me. I searched her name on WhatsApp and the messages between them are encrypted?? Like what’s that about.

I’ve now checked whats involved in setting up encryption on WhatsApp and both parties have to set it up with one scanning a code on the others phone. Needless to say I’m seriously concerned now.

Has anyone encountered this before and how do you think I should handle this tricky situation?

Im thinking of contacting this woman’s husband but feel that might be a bit much at this point.

Thanks all.

Op probably searched her name and created a new chat or new “page” which is why the encryption message is there.

Vitriolinsanity · 18/01/2025 17:12

Im being think too I think. If she's gone into the phone with his password the messages wouldn't be encrypted. I've got strings and strings on mine.

Can you see unencrypted messages OP, say from you?

Gggglinda · 18/01/2025 17:12

Are you sure it's encrypted? Or has he locked/ hidden the chat? Did you read what they had been messaging one another? Would that not be more telling than the chat being encrypted?
I've just opened a new chat on what's app and this is what it says at the top. I haven't scanned my
mums phone and neither has she, it's just been done automatically on WhatsApp. Is this how your husband's chat looked?

Example from my phone. It's absolutely as standard.

(Enjoy my cat)

@CleanShirt

Your name is visible at the top by the way

I've just played with my settings. I have to switch on disappearing messages or locked messages for a conversation to be invisible after i send messages.

Unless DH does that for all messages I would say OP has some grounds for suspicion.

Starsandall · 18/01/2025 17:26

You can set up secret messages on what’s app I think you have to use a code to access.

Redcandlescandal · 18/01/2025 17:27

Im guessing OP means she can read other WA conversations but not this one. Her DH and the married woman he is messaging have put some kind of additional layer of protection on there.

TBH that would be enough for me to ditch him.

That's right. I have never done it l, so I'm not 100% sure, but I think you have to type the code in the what's app search bar for the chat to come up? So you wouldn't know if it was encrypted then, as she wouldn't have known the code to type in to reveal the chat.

Which others are pointing out may be because there are NO WA messages between them

wizzywig · 18/01/2025 17:59

Op. Contact the husband and ask if he can check whether the messages are locked.

housethatbuiltme · 18/01/2025 18:00

My messages to my husband are encrypted, we didn't scan anything and I don't even use a phone... facebook just told us we had to do it. It was when they first introduced Metaverse I think.

It was something to do with the sheer amount of messages (we message a dozen+ times a day everyday and have for 15 years since getting facebook in 2009).

Its frankly a PITA as the search messages function doesn't work with it (which makes going back to get appointment times etc... a nightmare) but theres absoloutly nothing we need to hide in our messages from each other or anyone else its boring things about the days plan, whats for dinner, school pick ups, dr appointment, bills, the odd funny meme etc...

Tontostitis · 18/01/2025 18:06

This us very suspicious and I would not be happy

Doggymummar · 18/01/2025 18:14

I think it's the opposite of suspicious. It's how it works and means they have never messaged each other, looking at my phone anyway. People I messaged regularly no warning. People I have never messaged, warning

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 18/01/2025 13:45

AH yeah reading the other replies has made me realise does it say:

"Messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted. No one outside of this chat, not even whatsapp, can read or listen to them. Tap to learn more."

If so that appears at the top of every chat on what'sapp, open a new chat with anyone you have never messaged on there and you will see the same.

Probably means they've never messaged each other on whatsapp

Yes, this. If you can’t see any messages and just the ‘encrypted’ note then they might never have messaged

Usernamexyz1 · 18/01/2025 18:17

Applecharm25 · 18/01/2025 14:34

This thread is a pure example of someone being overly suspicious and seeing suspicion everywhere!

OP all chats are encrypted on whatsapp. That's standard

No, and wanting to run to the husband of the lady based on make believe. Jeez

Usernamexyz1 · 18/01/2025 18:20

Applecharm25 · 18/01/2025 14:46

No she said the word encrypted.

And if you click into any whatsapp chat, it says "encrypted" at the top

Yeah, but that also means, he deletes their messages or heaven forbid, they don’t actually communicate via WhatsApp. After I changed phones without transferring lots of messages and I don’t back up, so if I look up someone in phone, they would appear like that with no messages.

Usernamexyz1 · 18/01/2025 18:21

H7529 · 18/01/2025 18:16

Cross posted. What I said!

NewFriendlyLadybird · 18/01/2025 19:01

The whole point of WhatsApp is that it’s end-to-end encrypted.

I also have a load of contacts listed by WhatsApp whom I’ve never actually messaged using WA. Like many PP, I think the OP has found the contact, because he has her phone number because work, and seen the encryption notice and no messages because they have not ever chatted on WhatsApp.

Mugcake · 18/01/2025 19:12

Does it look like this? Because that's just what it looks like when you have never WhatsApped them. I've never sent a WhatsApp to this person but it still says it's encrypted, it means that chat (should I start ine) will be encrypted as are all WhatsApp messages

If the OP returns, I think she's talking about this

https://faq.whatsapp.com/764072925284841/?cms_platform=android&helpref=platform_switcher

Chat Lock - so no one who has your phone can see the chat unless they use a code to unlock the chat with a PIN

Ezkay · 18/01/2025 19:24

If OP had DH's phone then she could see exactly what DH would see, apart from Locked Chats which needs face/fingerprint/password to access. If she couldn't see in the Locked Chats folder, then she couldn't see any of the colleague's messages if they were in there.

It sounds like the two have never messaged for OP to be able to see this colleague in an unlocked chat history and find the standard "Messages and calls are end-to-encrypted..." that sits at the top of every chat.

Whatever the reason OP had for looking into DH's phone, this is not a smoking gun that her proves suspicion right.

However, It sounds like OP is looking for evidence of something, and that needs addressing before contacting a potentially innocent colleague's family with incorrect assertions that cause unnecessary trouble.

Twaddlepip · 18/01/2025 19:37

BillStickersWillBeProsocuted · 18/01/2025 13:24

Is there any possibility it's because they talk about work and it has to be encrypted as it contains sensitive data? Are you able to check if chats with other colleagues are encrypted?

Kinda feels like I'm clutching at straws though to be honest, I'm sorry but it's probably more likely that he's cheating with her to be honest

Oh sweet summer child… 💔

ClairDeLaLune · 18/01/2025 20:05

Good grief! What a load of nonsense on this thread. OP you are paranoid!

That message is just the message that appears at the top of every WhatsApp conversation. If there’s nothing below it that means either he’s never messaged her, or all messages have been deleted. It doesn’t mean he’s sleeping with her!

SlowSeasons · 18/01/2025 20:20

All WhatsApp messages are encrypted?

There's a default notice at the beginning of all chats. If there are no other messages, it's because there are no messages.
