What do you do in the evenings

I am intrigued to know what people do other than watch TV (including streaming services) in the evenings.
Often I will ask a friend if they are watching or have watched something and they will respond by saying 'we don't watch a lot of TV'.

I don't think my partner and I watch a lot of TV just the news and usually an hour before 10pm but I would like to know what people do instead. Obviously leaving aside going out and doing the usual social stuff, cinema, theatre, meeting friends etc.

I am talking about if at home, not doing chores and relaxing. We have a dog we walk every evening, I read when I go to bed and I do chores in the evening and I am happy with my lot but just interested to know what others do

Doom-scroll. 😂

beguilingeyes · 13/01/2025 17:37

I have friends who say they don't watch a lot of TV but then can give you chapter and verse about The Traitors.

WifeOfMacbeth · 13/01/2025 17:40

We play Scrabble quite often. Sometimes attend talks etc on Zoom.

stayathomer · 13/01/2025 17:45

Tv, read books or magazines, write ( though not enough- I am an author!), plan/ clean for the next day. In early days we actually played scrabble but not anymore

DelphiniumBlue · 13/01/2025 17:46

Sometimes we'll do something like PuzzGrid, or a crossword, maybe play some music. If there's other family members around we might do a board game. I have periods when I sew or crochet. DH and I both read quite a bit. Occasionally I do something arty, paint or make cards. I'll quite often have the TV or radio or a podcast on in the background. But tbh often we're on our phones, texting, MN, talking to family who live away, internet shopping etc.

MessyNeate · 13/01/2025 17:48

Depends really.

DS14 has training two nights a week so by the time he gets home we've had dinner showers etc it's bedtime.

DH and I will watch a series together. Game together. Walk the dog (though he's a little broken so can't walk far these days)

I'll do some washing, potter about.

I also work nights so the evenings post nights I'm often in bed and good for nothing by 8pm Grin

In my most recent relationship we would watch TV, read/scroll in each others company, cook together, or just cuddle and talk. Of course we’d have sex too. I very rarely did chores or work related tasks in the evening, and now that I live alone I still don’t - I do the same things I did with him, only on my own.

Retrospeaker · 13/01/2025 17:52

By the time DS is in bed and we’ve tidied up/cleaned it’s at least 8pm. Sometimes an hour of TV, otherwise a bath, reading, or a shag and then sleep. We try to sleep about 9.

NameChangedAgainn · 13/01/2025 17:53

I never watch TV, I'll watch the occasional film at the cinema but that's it.
As for what I do in the evenings if I'm home - go for walks, exercise, craft, read, play games, chat to friends on my phone, a bit of housework if I haven't got through it in the day, batch cook meals for the evenings I'm too busy to cook...
I do go out a lot in the evenings, visits to friends/family for dinner or drinks etc, book club, fitness or dance classes.. In the summer I will do a lot of trips to the beach /beauty spots after work.

PigInAHouse · 13/01/2025 17:54

I don’t watch much TV but I read loads. My autistic child doesn’t sleep until late and by the time he’s in bed I just want silence.

PigInAHouse · 13/01/2025 17:55

Or cross stitch/crochet. Anything silent!

Newgolddream70 · 13/01/2025 17:56

I am about to thrash DS10 at battleships, c'mon!!

MrsMontyD · 13/01/2025 17:56

Make dinner, eat, clean up, watch telly, read, journal, go to bed. Interspersed with conversation.

RuffledKestrel · 13/01/2025 17:56

Gaming (board/table top games or video games) either together, ourselves or with friends.
I'll read or crochet or edit photos. They'll draw/paint minis.
We generally watch an hour or so of telly before bed together though.

Hillrunning · 13/01/2025 18:02

I'm out of the house two evenings a week and DH does shift work so often we don't have evenings together but when we are home together we spend time learning about (rather than doing as it needs daylight) our shared hobby, reading in each others company, having sex, chatting, planning stuff such as next holiday, diy jobs that aren't too noisy, go for strolls or jsit stare at our phones dropped across each other. None of thoes things are necessarily better than tv though.

Hazeltwig · 13/01/2025 18:05

We play games or do a jigsaw sometimes. Get stuck into our respective hobbies!

JackieGoodman · 13/01/2025 18:06

Watch TV/movies (streaming on demand stuff so no live TV), chat

TeabySea · 13/01/2025 18:12

Read
Watch limited TV
Occasionally board games with family
Doomscroll
Crafts (make cards, jewellery, etc)
Crochet/Knit (badly)
Catch up with friends either online or by phone
Hobby [done online from home]
Adult education short courses - usually online

PlayedOurFavouriteSong · 13/01/2025 18:14

If we’re home and not watching TV, we chat, listen to music, practice piano/guitar, play scrabble/word or/connections, play on the Switch, play with the dogs, exercise, text friends, sit outside with a drink when the weather is good, read a book or go on the Internet. I like to do a jigsaw but I’m on my own with that one!

healthybychristmas · 13/01/2025 18:15

beguilingeyes · 13/01/2025 17:37

I have friends who say they don't watch a lot of TV but then can give you chapter and verse about The Traitors.

That is three hours a week though.

AsmallabodeIsallweWant · 13/01/2025 18:15

We are continentals, so late dinners here a thing, also mumsnet, youtube or a book

I might play the piano if I'm in the mood

BowTiesPinkTail · 13/01/2025 18:24

Play video games, doom scroll and not much more 😂 I will watch crunchyroll or netflix when I'm ejected from my gaming corner in the bedroom (when dh wants to go to bed 😂)

StarDolphins · 13/01/2025 18:28

I would love to watch TV, I really love a good documentary. Apart from watching My Wife, the abuser which I was desperate to watch, Strictly & the run up to the election, I haven’t watched Tv in over 3 years!

By the time I’ve made tea, fed the dog/cat, washed up, tidied up & got everything ready for the next day, it’s time to get ready for bed! I don’t even know how I would fit a relationship in, even if I wanted one!

Nothatgingerpirate · 13/01/2025 19:01

Doom scroll, as a PP said, yes.
Browsing Mumsnet, getting bashed.
Baking strudel.
Caring for my husband, not disabled, three decades older.
Listening to TV, rarely watching.
Lots of stuff online. 😄

BBQPete · 13/01/2025 19:12

We'll each be out of the house for a good part of 4 or more evenings a week.

Quite a lot of admin for our hobbies / volunteering.

MN-ing, and other general scrolling round the internet.

Reading

'Life Admin' type stuff

Sometimes some houseworky type stuff, or prepping food for days when we have less time.
