What do you do in the evenings

I am intrigued to know what people do other than watch TV (including streaming services) in the evenings.
Often I will ask a friend if they are watching or have watched something and they will respond by saying 'we don't watch a lot of TV'.

I don't think my partner and I watch a lot of TV just the news and usually an hour before 10pm but I would like to know what people do instead. Obviously leaving aside going out and doing the usual social stuff, cinema, theatre, meeting friends etc.

I am talking about if at home, not doing chores and relaxing. We have a dog we walk every evening, I read when I go to bed and I do chores in the evening and I am happy with my lot but just interested to know what others do

Out doing hobbies or gym 3 or 4 evenings a week. Usually eat out & go to the theatre/cinema once a week. If at home, I practise piano, learn French, read or bake. We watch TV together as well, usually a film.

JC03745 · 13/01/2025 19:30

We don't have children, just a dog.
-In the summer, I'd be in the garden or green house till late
-Walking the dog
-Walking the dog to a local wine bar 😆

Rest of the year or when not out
-TV is on, but I crochet rugs which I donate to charity
-I spot animals on mammal web. There are thousands of camera trap photos that need classification and I prefer to help that than get trapped in rabbit hole of facebook! Home
-But mainly I'm on MN!

Home

Upload and classify images and video from camera traps

We play Scrabble quite often. Sometimes attend talks etc on Zoom.

I am so jealous of this.
I used to love playing Scrabble or card games - especially canasta, bezique and klaberjass.
Even my first DH would play scrabble and my second DH and my son enjoyed playing cards or scrabble.
Now I live alone and I get a couple of games of scrabble and some card games with my son over the Christmas/ New Year period. It's actually one of the highlights for me.
So instead I'm reduced to doing jigsaws or knitting on an evening instead.

panpipeschill · 13/01/2025 19:52

I live alone so i can do what i want.
Tonight its mumsnet a noddle and some panpipes music in the background.

GreyCarpet · 13/01/2025 20:07

Don't really watch tv but we do watch a film on streaming services occasionally.

I play in a band and we usually practice one night a week.

I run a ukulele group in a school so I find songs for them to play.

Play guitar and sing to myself a bit.

Tidy up, potter about a bit.

I'm making a patchwork quilt for my daughter. I do them all by hand so the winter's the best time for it because it gets a bit hot with it on my lap!

We have a few pubs that do open mic nights nearby so I sometimes go to one of those.

DorianMeile · 13/01/2025 20:53

Spend my whole evening up and down the stairs trying to get my child with SEN to sleep. Then I do dishes/laundry, then go to bed.

MayaPinion · 13/01/2025 21:03

Play music and doom scroll. I usually get locked into some sort of internet hell loop by asking it a stupid question like ‘do badgers have gums?’ and then there I am, three hours later, reading about Boris Johnson proroguing parliament and living in a fridge, and no clue how it happened.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 13/01/2025 21:35

Gaming, reading, writing, doom-scrolling, playing with the cat.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 13/01/2025 21:51

Dh and I have dinner, tidy up, watch a show or read and then go to bed. One episode a night usually so I do say "we don't watch a lot of tv". We read in bed for an hour plus.

When I lived alone I would read with radio on as a rule.

OOOtil2025 · 13/01/2025 21:55

Just chat and talk about life in general, plan holidays, talk about anything really. Maybe with a glass of wine and nibbles, or a pot of tea.

ChunkyMunky · 13/01/2025 21:59

By the time the children have gone to bed it’s usually just a few jobs, cleaning, tidying etc. then off to bed. Definitely a bit of doom scrolling too.

I’m one of those people that says they don’t watch much tv, it’s not really a deliberate thing, I just don’t tend to fit it in. Most nights I would rather the extra time to sleep. It does make small-talk difficult though, as I frequently have no idea (and no interest) when other people discuss what they’ve been watching. When I do watch, it’s usually on catch up, months (or years!) after everyone else.

Huskytrot · 13/01/2025 22:04

Make & eat dinner.
Ferry kids around.
Occasional yoga class or run while they're in activities.
Make packed lunches & pack next days bags.
Clean up the kitchen
Put kids to bed
9pm sit down and watch 1 hour tv
10pm bed.

Supersimkin7 · 13/01/2025 22:06

No one watches telly. Everyone plays scrabble.

Just my little joke.

Telly and creative mending and scrolling and housework simultaneously.

Nextyearhopes · 13/01/2025 22:07

Running training twice a week. I have church meeting one day, DH plays badminton, Fridays nothing, we make a special meal, go for a drink, or whatever.
We’re not big tv fans. We actually don’t have Netflix!

CockSpadget · 13/01/2025 22:11

I hardly watch TV, but DP watches a lot. I listen to music, paint/draw, game, go to gigs. When it’s lighter nights I spend a lot of time in the garden. I’m never bored.

soberserene · 13/01/2025 22:13

Read, potter about the house, have a bath, message or call a friend, talk to my DC and even DH.

ThePoshUns · 13/01/2025 22:19

I go to yoga classes 2 or 3 evenings a week. I also try and walk a few miles each evening.
I find walking with an audiobook far more relaxing than tv.
I feel glad to have missed out on the phenomenon of love island which everyone I know seems to love.

MaryGreenhill · 13/01/2025 22:24

I read a lot , reply to my emails , sort out life admin, do odd jobs about the house, listen to music . Social media ,make phone calls .

Endofyear · 13/01/2025 22:35

I usually clean up after dinner, have a shower, might do a bit of yoga first! By about 9 I'm in pj's, watch a bit of tv, read or catch up with friends on messenger.

creamsnugjumper · 13/01/2025 22:37

Tonight I'm in a bath, chilling as I've worked until 9pm, DH is watching TV, DS is revising and god knows where the either one is? He's 21 and has his own life.

Summer evenings are the best... glass of wine, reading a book.. bliss

You can play scrabble online, apparently.

HeddaGarbled · 13/01/2025 22:38

I read a book while he mutters at his phone.

elfnumber1 · 13/01/2025 22:43

Read books
Research next holiday destination
chop wood for wood burner
play with cats
cook for fun
make marmalade
workout

I like Saturday morning TV but that’s it really

SunflowerTed · 13/01/2025 22:43

Gym, clubbacise or Pilates, cook, prep food for lunches, play with cats, read, chat, plan holidays, snuggle around 9 x

Showdogworkingdog · 13/01/2025 22:55

I’m at a gym class most evenings then once I’m home and showered and walked the dog I read my kindle, look at mumsnet and potter about usually while listening to an audiobook or podcast. If the tv is on I might watch something for a bit but if home alone I don’t bother, I tend to prefer a book.
