What do you do in the evenings

I am intrigued to know what people do other than watch TV (including streaming services) in the evenings.
Often I will ask a friend if they are watching or have watched something and they will respond by saying 'we don't watch a lot of TV'.

I don't think my partner and I watch a lot of TV just the news and usually an hour before 10pm but I would like to know what people do instead. Obviously leaving aside going out and doing the usual social stuff, cinema, theatre, meeting friends etc.

I am talking about if at home, not doing chores and relaxing. We have a dog we walk every evening, I read when I go to bed and I do chores in the evening and I am happy with my lot but just interested to know what others do

Go to the gym three or four evenings a week except weekends.

Other days usually cook, read and watch TV, keep on track with boring chores so I can have the weekend free for whatever I want.

Sorry nothing exciting!

FTTTC2025 · 13/01/2025 23:06

We usually watch an episode of something before or in bed together for an hour before sleep. I sometimes work late so it can be a case of dinner then bed. Other nights it’s usually dinner, dog walk, washing hung up/put away. Then tv for a bit then bed. I like to read or knit if I have time. If it’s just me, I often listen to podcasts or audiobooks.
I love the summer nights as I usually potter in the garden after tea. My favourite time of day in summer is 8.30pm when I go to water the plants before bed.

I am so jealous of this.
I used to love playing Scrabble or card games - especially canasta, bezique and klaberjass.
Even my first DH would play scrabble and my second DH and my son enjoyed playing cards or scrabble.
Now I live alone and I get a couple of games of scrabble and some card games with my son over the Christmas/ New Year period. It's actually one of the highlights for me.
So instead I'm reduced to doing jigsaws or knitting on an evening instead.

I played scrabble online for a while but got frustrated as I knew more words than their dictionary did! Don't hear of many people playing bezique any more - I used to play as a child.
Have you looked to see if there are any groups near you that get together to play games? In some areas the U3A have board game groups, for instance. Also the Women's Institute.
Or have you looked at online places like Board Game Arena or Tabletop Simulator?

We're both self employed. Sometimes by the time we've both finished admin duties it can be 9pm. DH does a physical job and sometimes doesn't get in until later, then he eats his dinner, then has a shower. The mid week evenings just melt away. Sometimes we'll watch a programme together then but by 10 we're both ready for bed.

Then there's nights like tonight when I've been put so I'm going to bed late! DH is working away.

orangeegg · 13/01/2025 23:37

Go to the gym together or go out for a walk, cook, eat and wash up, chat, play a game (board game or cards), watch an episode of something, go to bed and read together. If he's watching a football match I'll read my book alongside him.

poemsandwine · 13/01/2025 23:38

I finished work at 10pm. The joys of self-employment. When I don't work, I read, do chores, am on here. I should be sleeping.

Pumpkincozynights · 13/01/2025 23:39

Sometimes go to a gym class. Cook dinner, prepare my lunch for the following day. Wash up and clean the kitchen. Sometimes put a load of washing in. Put clean, dry clothes away. Read. Watch TV. Telephone my parents. If it’s a warm night I will garden, or dh and I will sit outside and talk. Update our shared calendar as we sometimes work opposing hours.

StrawHatLuffy · 13/01/2025 23:45

Pretty rigidly set in a routine round here.

3pm - Walk Dog - meet DD from School
4pm - home - dry dog - post school naps and wind down
5pm - Tea prep and cook
6pm eat
6.30pm sort pets out (clean litter trays and yadda yadda)
7pm put the TV on or play game or stream something.
10pm Toileting in preparation for bed
10.30pm into bed.
Half past fuck only knows - Sleep

Beesandhoney123 · 13/01/2025 23:55

It really is a joy... My clients just landed us with a bonkers deadline, so having thought I'd finished I now have a 6am alarm set!

I like to keep the weekend free, so hour if housework/ laundry, cook tea/make pack up, tv, Mumsnet.

Christl78 · 14/01/2025 06:03

Exercise, cooking, reading books, listening to podcasts, watching netflix and yes socialising, theatre, cinema.

DreamSpaceships · 14/01/2025 06:33

Most evenings after the little kids are in bed it’s a quick tidy up, shower, then on the sofa for an hour before going to bed myself. If both dp and I are home we watch one episode of whatever box-set we’re currently watching, if he’s out I read.

I do however say I don’t watch much tv as I don’t consider one episode of one show 4 or 5 times a week that much. I never watch live tv and only watch one thing at a time. When I was younger I could easily watch 3 or 4 hours of different shows in an evening. But to some people I probably do watch a lot of tv still!

DancingQueen88 · 14/01/2025 07:47

We spend time cooking, eating together, cleaning... watch films, phone friends, have long baths, the kids have friends over, they go to the park if it's lighter/warmer to play football, read my book, walk my dog.... do the washing... oh the glamour!

I have friends who say they don't watch a lot of TV but then can give you chapter and verse about The Traitors.

Doesn't that just mean they watch one show? That isn't a lot to me.

I'm someone who would say I don't watch a lot of TV. By that I mean I rarely watch live TV, less than once every few months. I have one or two shows that I have on the go via streaming but will watch maybe an episode or two every few days, so less than 4/7 times a week. The majority of my evenings I'm either doing chores, or chatting with my husband as we listen to music, play cards etc or I'm engaged in one of many craft projects. Currently making photo albums as a gift for a loved one and also making a bag. However I have very small children so some nights I'm not doing any of that, I'm boobing to sleep, up and down resettling toddlers, pretend asleep etc next to my little ones. By the time that's all done it's 10 so I just go to sleep.

Paradoes · 14/01/2025 08:37

Not a lot
last night i baked bread and tonight bring the kids to football training

sometimes I do the grocery shop of a late evening and sometimes i do an online webinar for work (teacher) and sometimes go for swim - but I need a better plan / ideas

it’s hard on the dark wet evenings to get motivated

I'm talking about the kind of people who imply that TV watching is beneath them somehow as if they've got so many more important things to do,but then spend a lot of time talking about what they watch.

Doesn’t sound like you like your ‘friends’ much!

During the week I go up to bed with my youngest about nine, once I've got him into bed I go to bed and read.
Weekends me and partner usually cook or get a takeaway and eat a bit later with a bottle of wine, then we will watch a series together.
In that time between tea and bedtime of the youngest we are usually scrolling..(me on mumsnet) or reading and chatting whilst youngest is watching his shite on YouTube.
I'm pretty full on all day with an active job then I go to the gym and finally walk the dogs so usually after tea I quite like the time to chill abit.

superclouds · 14/01/2025 10:59

Watch dramas
Go to pub quiz
Go to cinema
Play cards

CocoQueen2024 · 14/01/2025 11:14

Walk the dog, have something to eat, watch TV, doom scroll and then do some study. Prepare stuff for work and then in bed at 11pm.
