Would you take a bullet for your partner?

Was chatting to a friend who said the way she believes you can tell if you’re with the person you should be with/soulmate is if you feel like you would take a bullet for them.
I said the only people I would take a bullet for is my children, not even my parents, siblings etc who I also love.
she said that that means I don’t truly love my partner. What do you think? I don’t think you can ever unconditionally love anyone except your children

Yeah, but I secretly think I’m immortal. Also he’s better at earning money and is perfectly capable of looking after DC. So on balance if she had to be left with one parent she’d overall be better off with DH alive.

Oh God I would probably have a terrible moment of trying to work out which of us would be the best surviving parent by which point we would both be shot.

I was thinking this 😆 if we are in the jungle where survival skills are needed then I’d have to take the hit.

IncompleteSenten · 13/07/2024 07:42

I don't know.

It's one of those things you'd actually have to face in order to find out.

SareBear87 · 13/07/2024 07:42

Not a chance, whatever mess he had gotten into would be his. Wouldn't hesitate for DD.

SallyWD · 13/07/2024 07:58

If it was just me and him, then probably yes. However we have kids and I just wouldn't want to be without them - or for the children to be without me.

thatstakingalongtimetoboil · 13/07/2024 07:59

No. My kids would be without a Mum

Fourthnite · 13/07/2024 08:03

Every man for himself in my house 😂

TheaBrandt · 13/07/2024 08:06

Having twice in 50 years been in extreme situations once involving my toddlers life I just freeze. So sadly I won’t be “taking a bullet” for anyone and think anyone saying they would do so is bring very silly.- words are cheap.

I do love Dh as much as I love the dds which is controversial but he is an amazing person.

GoldFrame · 13/07/2024 08:09

No, absolutely not.

Maybe time to reflect 😳

AuntieMarys · 13/07/2024 08:12

I wouldn't for anyone.

AuntieMarys · 13/07/2024 08:12

I wouldn't for anyone.

Same! (I don’t have kids, or else this might have been the exception!)

Frowningprovidence · 13/07/2024 08:20

I think id freeze. It tends to be my go to response.

I have thought about other situations like being on a sinking boat or fires and I would very much be giving my husband the children and expecting him to get them to safety, possibly at my expense. Like he is first across a crumbling walkway carryinv the kids , and I follow but it's now crumbled so I can't.

GreyCarpet · 13/07/2024 08:32

It's a ridiculous thing to even be discussing and not a conversation I'd entertain in the first place..

My child - well yes I probably would if I ever found myself in such a ridiculous scenario but another adult I hadn't made myself? Definitely not.

It would be the ultimate in setting yourself on fire to keep someone else warm.

JokoKitten · 13/07/2024 08:32

No chance.

I would for the kids though.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 13/07/2024 08:40

"It's a ridiculous thing to even be discussing and not a conversation I'd entertain in the first place.. "

@GreyCarpet and yet here you are... 🤔

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/07/2024 08:41

Probably. He'd freeze whereas I get the fight/flight response. Hopefully, the fat would get in the way of it doing serious damage...

Booboobedooo · 13/07/2024 08:16

Oh I have adult dcs. But still wouldn't

Sprogonthetyne · 13/07/2024 08:53

No. There's no way he would cope with been the surviving parent to DC. If I die, they would probably end up in care, and he would most likely become suicidal from the stress of it all (his MH is already not great). So 4 lives either lost or ruined.

Obviously it would still be awful for me & DC if he dies, but not catastrophic in the same way.

YouJustDoYou · 13/07/2024 09:43

Yes, because he's the smart one who'll be able to keep supporting the family. I can be sacrificed 😅

garlictwist · 13/07/2024 09:59

If there was time to decide which of us was shot, I'd probably pick me. He has his own business, is responsible for the jobs and lives of his staff and has achieved so much more than I ever will. I don't feel my passing would be particularly lamented (we don't have kids). However whether I could bring myself to dive in front of a bullet in an instant, I'm not sure I'd have the courage.

CalamityClam · 13/07/2024 10:11

I read that as ‘buffet’ and so was totally confused by the answers!

UpThereForThinkingDownThereForDancing · 13/07/2024 10:13

@CalamityClam lol

dudsville · 13/07/2024 10:16

I don't think it's the strongest measure of love, but yes I would take a bullet for my DH. I would also then remind him of it daily thereafter😂

DoTheRoary · 13/07/2024 10:16

Didsomeonesaydogs · 12/07/2024 22:48

I used to think I’d take a bullet for my husband and then he discarded me as soon as the youngest finished school.

Bastard stole years of my life!

Now I’d use him as a human shield.

Edited

🤣 I'm sorry that he did that but I just loved the "human shield" comment. I needed a smile this morning.

In answer to the original question, no not for my husband but for my kids yes absolutely. Doesn't mean I don't love my husband but he's a bit of a dick at times and if I wasn't here the kiddos would get no vegetables and probably end up at school wearing no pants. (Not that they never walk around with no pants under my watch either but I do insist on them for school...)

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 13/07/2024 10:20

Nope. Only my children ever.
Possibly my cat 😺 in my futile side quest to earn her love
