Holiday with new partner and embarrassing problem

I’m so embarrassed. I’ve had a fungal nail
infection which has spread from my middle toe to big toe nail. It’s now thickened and looks obvious. I’ve been to the docs and got a lacquer and that’s all fine but I’m going on holiday for 2 weeks with a new partner and I’ve managed to hide it from him so far but he’s bound to see it by the pool and I can’t wear closed toe shoes all the time or he’ll think I’m weird! Im rubbish at doing my own nails at the best of time so I want to get a
pedicure to at least disguise it while im
away but google has come up with no salons that offer pedicures for people with nail infections so I don’t know what to do. Help! Anyone else has this issue? Anyone know what I can do?

Yes - file down the nail slightly (gently) and apply a fake toe nail. You might need to then shape this a little to make it looo
natural. Paint all toe nails the same.

Inmynotgivingafuckera · 04/06/2024 00:02

Superdrug sell own brand toe nails that are easy to apply

BlueSkyBeing · 04/06/2024 00:04

Can you not just paint your nails for the two weeks and return to using the laquer after, if you want to keep them hidden? Or just be open with him and tell him and wear a plaster over your nail if there is a concern that it is something that could spread somehow. Not very glamourous but I'm not sure I'd be that concerned or think it matters that much?

MelodyFinch · 04/06/2024 00:06

My local salon were happy to do a pedicure with gloves on for my thickened discoloured nail. My chiropodist was able to thin and file the nail as well. I then painted it a sort of white pink that was less noticeable. I also bought sandals from M&S that didn’t shoe much toenail and were really comfy.

Chasingsquirrels · 04/06/2024 06:35

Just stop hiding it and mention it to him.
And, I doubt he'll be that interested in your feet.

Suncream123 · 04/06/2024 06:36

If he cares, he isn't the partner for you.

BigDahliaFan · 04/06/2024 06:37

Neat tea tree oil for the infection. Has to be the 100% stuff. And ring a salon and ask.

Talipesmum · 04/06/2024 06:38

Just paint your toenails yourself.

LemonCitron · 04/06/2024 06:42

Remember it looks worse to you than anyone else. He won't care!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 04/06/2024 06:43

Would you be bothered about a dodgy nail if he had one OP? …..
Paint them yourself and enjoy your holiday OP.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 04/06/2024 06:47

Bloody hell, he probably won't even notice, lots of worry over nothing. I've got no toenails due to years of running marathons, they stopped growing back, if anyone notices I tell them that and it's never been an issue.

I do paint nails on though for special occasions

nobeans · 04/06/2024 06:48

Unless he's got a foot fetish he won't be looking at your feet he'll be looking at your tits

PatternedLlama · 04/06/2024 06:48

You can buy anti-fungal nail polish to hide it but just be honest. Lots of both men and women have had this at some point. I was the one who religiously treated and filed Dh's toe until it grew out.

Usually men aren't bothered about these things so I would just tell him.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 04/06/2024 06:50

Just paint them yourself. 🥴

Dinosaurus86 · 04/06/2024 06:54

Nailner do a set which has a lacquer you put underneath and then a (supposedly more breathable) red varnish you can put on top - it’s called treat and colour.

Westfacing · 04/06/2024 06:55

Just do your own pedicure, it's not difficult - even if you're not particularly good at it a bit of nail colour always looks nice.

I've had a Fungal infection on my big toenail for over 30 years. Nothing - including a 6 month course of Antibiotics - has shifted it. I just paint it now when I do my nails. It doesn't seem to bother it. Then I'll take the polish off for a couple of weeks to let the air get to it.

Hahaha thanks guys I feel loads better now! Yeah I actually don’t think he’d care… its me, I’ll paint them myself.
Thanks for the suggestions and taking the time to reply. Much appreciated!

Just asked DH if he knows what my toenails look like - he hasn't a clue!

If your bloke makes any comment other than how gorgeous you look, he should be dumped immediately.

Sadly the lacquer doesn't work though - used it for years before admitting defeat and taking the tablets.

As a guy, this.

He's hardly going to be kissing you, making love, or out to dinner thinking geez, that fungal nail thing!

Lol, first world problems.

Ellie1015 · 04/06/2024 08:59

Crocs are very popular just now if you want a closed toe pool shoe. Not the nicest shoe but might be helpful to cover toe.

Also you are right he won't notice/care. Enjoy your hol.

K1ran · 04/06/2024 09:35

If you want to get a pedicure, take your own nail varnish to a salon, so as not to pass the fungal infection on.

In the long term, likely chances the lacquer won't fix the problem so ask your GP for terbinafine tablets. You will need to get liver blood tests done before you get this prescribed and take the tablet for about 12 months but that's the only way it will fully clear the infection.

FrenchandSaunders · 04/06/2024 10:26

Go to a podiatrist before your hols, they'll file it down so it's not as thick, then you can put nail varnish on to disguise it. This is what I do.

Dadjoke007 · 04/06/2024 10:59

My GF/ex had one, made no difference to us - be honest, if he is bothered then not a great bloke

mitogoshi · 04/06/2024 12:11

He's very unlikely to notice. I would just paint them the day before travel
