Holiday with new partner and embarrassing problem

Amberjane41 · 04/06/2024 00:00

I’m so embarrassed. I’ve had a fungal nail
infection which has spread from my middle toe to big toe nail. It’s now thickened and looks obvious. I’ve been to the docs and got a lacquer and that’s all fine but I’m going on holiday for 2 weeks with a new partner and I’ve managed to hide it from him so far but he’s bound to see it by the pool and I can’t wear closed toe shoes all the time or he’ll think I’m weird! Im rubbish at doing my own nails at the best of time so I want to get a
pedicure to at least disguise it while im
away but google has come up with no salons that offer pedicures for people with nail infections so I don’t know what to do. Help! Anyone else has this issue? Anyone know what I can do?

Vicks vapour rub might help, read it here years and years ago.

Julimia · 06/06/2024 23:39

If he's nuts about you do you really think he'll be bothered by a toe nail🤔??

vickylou78 · 06/06/2024 23:42

Just paint your toenails yourself?

Sablecat · 07/06/2024 01:49

My husband did recoil in horror when he saw my feet. Not toenails problems but bunions. We've been married over thirty years. I got them fixed 18 years in. I think if he is put off by a fungal nail, he's not worth having. Things, non glamorous things, happen in a long relationship and its nice to think that somebody has your back regardless.

Tinytimmy123 · 07/06/2024 05:32

If you are filing it yourself make sure you dont use that file on your other toenails to prevent spread. Also make sure that your shoes or socks aren't causing reinfection. Open toed sandals are your friend. Enjoy your holiday.

If he cares, he isn't the partner for you.

Exactly this.

Thanks everyone. I feel so much better. He’s a great guy I doubt he would give a shit. It’s purely me. Probably didn’t help that I was inspecting it with a magnifying glass last night 😂 I highly doubt he will do that and if he did then yes I would dump him 😂

id tell him before you see him - “im so annoyed, I’ve got a fungal nail infection just before holiday! Really not very glam but don’t worry, its not contagious” I doubt he’ll mention it or think about it again and you’ll feel better because you won’t be wondering when he’ll notice.

whyhavetheygotsomany · 07/06/2024 06:25

Paint it

LadyPenelope68 · 07/06/2024 07:31

If you’re going to do your own pedicure/paint toe nails, buy 2 of the same varnish and only use one of the bottles on your fungal nails, otherwise you’ll spread the infection to your other toe nails.

BusyMummy001 · 07/06/2024 07:37

There’s a fungal nail treatment that comes with a nail varnish that I’ve used before - very effective and noone can see? Nailner. Also used when going on holiday last year.

It really isn’t contagious. DH has really bad fungal toenails, on nearly all toes. He’s had the injection, the tablets, every cream on the market….nothing gets rid of them.

Ive shared a bed with him for more than forty years. Years ago, we used to bath together ( 😍) , I often used to get into his bath after him in the morning as it was still hot and I like a soak.

I have never had the slightest sign of foot -falling -off ( as we used to call it). The tea tree oil seems to keep it lubricated, but it does get on the sheets if you use it at night.

You are at liberty to share this info if he does get antsy ( though I was never troubled by it).

Wakemeup17 · 07/06/2024 07:54

Can you afford laser treatment? I had one two years ago when I had the same problem, it's amazing. A bit too late for it now as it takes around six weeks to get rid of the problem but I cannot recommend it enough. I needed two sessions. I'm not in the UK though so not too sure if this is available where you are.

Would you be bothered about a dodgy nail if he had one OP? …..
Paint them yourself and enjoy your holiday OP.

Presumably they'll be sharing a bed, shower etc, and it could possibly spread to him.

I would care.

Victoriancat · 06/06/2024 21:51

Unless he likes putting your feet in his mouth I doubt he'll care

😂😂😂

I actually did wonder if he was a toe sucker 🤮

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2024 08:03

If your nail has become thick znd the fungal infection is spreading the topical nail paint won't do anything. You'll need terbinafine anti fungal tablets. That will kill the infection and new nail will grow out. It can't be that hard to paint your toenails surely?

WOMANDOWNN · 07/06/2024 08:04

A lot of Asian nail shops will do this. In my experience.

if not. File the top of the nail right down. Take your time and get it into a nice shape and then paint them. You’ve got a few weeks to practice xx

tiredandtiredandtiredandtired · 07/06/2024 08:05

My husband had this. He got some tablets from the doctor which sorted it much quicker than the lacquer. It does take a while to grow out though.

A fungal nail infection doesn’t just appear overnight - it has to grow. Also, it’s highly contagious!! The OP caught it from herself. Terrible advice.

She needs to see a podiatrist to treat as well as treat at home & she needs to just cover it with nail polish for as long as she’s on holiday.

Wish44 · 07/06/2024 08:08

Vicks… won’t work in time for holiday but a long term solution.

Oh… then don’t say it’s not contagious 😂

JudeGarret · 07/06/2024 08:11

If you Google Footlogix and see if there are any salons that are qualified in their pedicures as they are safe for fungal nails and can be carried out by a professional

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 07/06/2024 08:37

As others have said, file it down OP. Mine is on the little toe and takes ages to file, not made easy by the tummy getting in the way, but it's worth it. Once filed and painted, should last for your holiday.

On a side note, one of my first boyfriends was a toe sucker and I thought it was normal 😅.

nolongersurprised · 07/06/2024 08:44

DH and I have been married for 18 years. He apparently has had a fungal infection for about 5 years, which he had been treating, but it was slow to respond. I only noticed recently 🤷‍♀️

Demonhunter · 07/06/2024 09:12

If you're at the point of calling him a partner and not someone you're dating, surely a medical issue isn't a problem 🤷‍♀️
