Holiday with new partner and embarrassing problem

I’m so embarrassed. I’ve had a fungal nail
infection which has spread from my middle toe to big toe nail. It’s now thickened and looks obvious. I’ve been to the docs and got a lacquer and that’s all fine but I’m going on holiday for 2 weeks with a new partner and I’ve managed to hide it from him so far but he’s bound to see it by the pool and I can’t wear closed toe shoes all the time or he’ll think I’m weird! Im rubbish at doing my own nails at the best of time so I want to get a
pedicure to at least disguise it while im
away but google has come up with no salons that offer pedicures for people with nail infections so I don’t know what to do. Help! Anyone else has this issue? Anyone know what I can do?

I have nail fungus in big toe, two years of treatment and finally feel I am winning, it's not easy to get rid!!!

Howtohelpbirds · 07/06/2024 09:32

I put Vicks vaporub on it overnight and the visual appearance improved overnight, ie the white powdery looking thickness dissappeared.
I then used it religiously every day for several weeks.
You can still see a small spot now that's growing out slowly and whenever I can see it gets powdery or larger I treat it with Vicks again to keep it at bay and until it's finally grown out.
If you want to quickly improve the visual appearance of it, give it a go.

If your nail has become thick znd the fungal infection is spreading the topical nail paint won't do anything. You'll need terbinafine anti fungal tablets. That will kill the infection and new nail will grow out. It can't be that hard to paint your toenails surely?

Terbafine was the only thing that cleared mine. I tried everything on the market before I finally went to the doctor and he prescribed it

Rather than use nail varnish or just explaining if he asked why her nail was a funny colour? It would make your holiday so uncomfortable having your food bandaged the whole time! If you're shagging someone I think you should be able to just say you've got a dodgy toenail.

downday24 · 07/06/2024 09:58

File it including the actual fiat nail which helps the appearance and then paint with pale varnish

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 07/06/2024 10:00

A friend of mine needed antibiotics to clear it up- see a GP.

Shan5474 · 07/06/2024 10:22

I’ve had this exact problem! I can’t get rid of the fungus, so I tell the guy I have terrible feet 😂 and I file down the nail and put nail varnish on. Even though it’s a weird shape no one has ever said anything. You can say you had an accident/someone trod on your toe and that’s why it’s a weird shape or thickness. If he cares that much about one toe nail he’s a petty man!!

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 07/06/2024 10:31

I have the same, currently treating. I just painted for my holiday and took it off when we were back.

Lentilweaver · 07/06/2024 10:41

He will absolutely not notice unless he has a foot fetish. Men usually notice very little.

TiredMummma · 07/06/2024 10:55

Personally I would paint it - rubbish nail polish would look better

But I doubt he will care

J0S · 07/06/2024 11:05

If you know him well enough to have sex with him then you know him well enough to tell him you have a problem with your toe nail . In the unlikely event that he notices and asks.

Most adult men understand that women are not all 100% flawless, like they are in the movies. And if he’s not an adult , you have no business to be a relationship with him .

Longdueachange · 07/06/2024 11:10

Don't paint or get a stick on for a fungal nail, it'll just allow the infection to worsen. See a professional podiatrist. If you can't get in quickly enough, then soak your feet in organic apple cider vinegar - timing and details are on the Internet - to kill the fungus. Once you've done the acv treatment it's fine to use a plaster with cream on holiday, but be sure to change the plaster and apply treatment regularly through the day.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/06/2024 11:13

I had this on one-off my toenails. Thick and yellow. I painted my own nails in the summer.

11 months ago I gave up wheat and sugar. Cleared up within three months. As did my eczema and aches and pains. Might be worth trying, esp if you'd like him to embrace two stone less of you 😀

LazyGewl · 07/06/2024 11:26

If it wasn't your toenail it would be something else about your appearance that bothered you as I suspect you are just a bit nervous about going away with a new partner, which is natural. You've received some great solutions on here so I hope you follow the advice and are able to just have a really great holiday with a partner who likes you so much they're holidaying with you. Have fun.

MaryMack · 07/06/2024 11:34

I have horrible discoloured toenails and I paint them with a sparkly gel nail polish, it disguises them beautifully. Have a fabulous holiday!

curious79 · 07/06/2024 11:41

It’s not going to disappear in time sadly. What you can do for foot health, and something to integrate full time to kill, cure and prevent this happening again (the nail will eventually grow out - I tackled a large toenail issue this way) is: wash your feet twice a day (middle too if very bad) to include a good bristle nail brush scrub of the toes, then put colloidal silver gel on each nail after (generously). It’s very very effective - easy to buy on Amazon
also change socks regularly, rotate shoes every day so they breathe and dry out, and throw away any shoes that are particularly smelly.
to the extent you can, have clean non painted nails for a period - nail varnish can keep the fungus in

Antibiotics will NOT get rid of a foot fungus but they will screw up your gut biome

curious79 · 07/06/2024 11:44

In the meantime just for the time of the holiday as some suggested paint over

WhenTheMoonShines · 07/06/2024 11:55

medical grade manuka honey cleared up my sons within 3 days, but he was 2 and his toenail not even the size of a 1p coin (pinky toe). Not sure if it would work as fast for you but might be worth a shot? We got it on minor ailments from the pharmacy here, didn’t need a prescription (though the GP nurse gave us one anyway)

Lwrenn · 07/06/2024 12:09

The superdrug fake nails are ace, mine outlasted my marriage they stayed on so long.

They're sometimes on offer. Grab 2 boxes incase something in the pool wrecks the glue but I love mine, they make my feet look less chubby 😂

ShinyPebble32 · 07/06/2024 12:19

I wouldn’t get fake toenails, they do tend to pop off and even if you take spares you’ll be a bag of nerves about one coming off and him noticing before you do.
Paint you own toenails - do it and remove it every day if you need practice! I find Essie to be by far the easiest brand to apply when doing my own, it glides on and usually needs 2 coats max. You can get it in most big Superdrug’s. Then when fully dry, a clear ‘gel’ top coat. Use a cotton bud dipped in remover for any mistakes.
he won’t be looking that closely at your feet to see if it’s a bit wonky, but a missing fake nail would be much more obvious.
Good luck! And have a great holiday - god I need a holiday! 😅

Not useful at the moment, but I’ve had a horrible fungal infection for years, even prescription meds haven’t helped. I tried these nail patches and have found they actually do help. You have to use them religiously. I only use them on my infected toe and the discolouration and thickness has reduced. I’ve been using them about 4 months. I also bought myself a cheap electric nail/manicure set. I only use it on my infected toe to keep it under control. Make sure you take the cuticles back. I once used a proper electric foot file on the toe to take a lot of the thickness down. It helped but be careful, I went a bit far and it hurt. I smothered it in tea tree every chance I got. But this was before the patches.

In summer when I want to cover it I just use the darkest nail polish. Usually red. I’m not very good at nails but it’s my toes, I don’t care on colour just as long as my toe dosnt stand out.

soaking your feet in apple cider vinegar is good too.
