Are There Any Normal Men on Online Dating Sites

JL690 · 08/04/2024 13:00

I've decided that I finally need to move on fully from my ex, who is the father of my little one and basically my FWB since I divorced him. I know, why did I do that etc? I signed up for an online dating site but it seems just about all the men on it are action men, climbing mountains, running marathons, gym addicts, bikers, which is definitely not me. Are there any sites that are not full of action men?

I found one on Bumble and I'm keeping him :) Although he's not "normal" in the classic sense but he is nor mal to my weird standards. There will be someone out there for you, I'd actually given up hope and was about to delete the app the day myself an my now soon to be husband started chatting. Good luck

Allegedly according to a few mumsnetters but I think they are as rare as unicorn poo tbh.

For me, it's the motorbike pictures that turn me off (as well as the action men)!

I'm just starting a foray into Bumble, which WAS supposed to be different to the other sites - but now isn't as the shitty men from other sites are now on there too.

Good luck (to both of us)!!

In my experience no. They’re either like you said spending 24/7 on outdoor pursuits or the complete opposite that they literally do nothing but watch sky sports all day.

The ones who seem normal at the start invariably turn out to be sex pests or misogynistic pigs.

ILostMy20s · 08/04/2024 13:54

Define "normal".

Or is "normal" = boring and having no interests/hobbies?

So we're all fighting for the one in a hundred that's actually OK 😂🙏

If course there are normal men online

there are as many ‘normal’ men as there are ‘normal’ women

and men find it just as hard as women do

now this doesn’t mean you will find one
hell no ! But they exist

I know, "normal" is undefinable, but to me it would be someone who accepts me as I am. The action men come across as on a mission to make their partner action woman 😬😂

Found my partner on plenty of fish (yes I know of all sites) and he’s normal (minus the leaving crumbs in the butter and toilet roll on the wrong way)

If it's one in a hundred in every area it might be worthwhile 😂

It's not called plenty of fish for nothing! 😃

In my experience there are far too many normal men on Bumble. And fuck me they're dull . I swear, if I see another "likes rugby, enjoys a cheeky pint, I'd love to cook for a special lady" with 5 photos of a bloke who looks like a thumb........🤦‍♀️

FairFuming · 08/04/2024 14:07

I found my wonderfully weird man on Bumble and he's lovely. There were so many terrible men on those sites but I did meet a few nice ones

I'd say it's a leap to make that conclusion.

You've got to remember that OLD, as with any form of social media, is just a tiny, tiny snapshot of someone's life. Obviously, with OLD in particular, people want to make themselves look as good/interesting as possible.

If the outdoors activities lifestyle isn't for you, that's totally fine. But I do find it a bit strange that a few posters complain about men showing what activities they're in to, or enjoy doing, because what's the alternative? Every photo being a selfie of them at the pub or something?

At least with these sorts of photos, they're demonstrating they have interests and hobbies. Some of them might want you to join in in future, sure, but for others it's just to show what they're interested in and act as potential icebreakers/conversation starters.

JL690 · 10/04/2024 10:28

I've been pleasantly surprised as well as unpleasantly surprised. There are a couple of men who seem quite gentlemanly so far 😀. As for the opposite end of the spectrum, thank goodness there's a block button 😂

There are definitely some good ones out there - mine is pretty amazing (although I could be biased).

We chatted for a little while online and then met up and clicked in person as much as we had online. We're now two years in and live together happily.

I'm quite shy with new people so I don't think
I'd be with anyone now if I hadn't tried OLD.

Cesarina · 10/04/2024 11:04

@JL690
I've never used an online dating site, and I'm not sure I'd have the guts to if I were single and hoping for a new relationship!
Thinking about friends, aquaintances, family members, etc, I actually know quite a few of varying ages who are married or in long-standing relationships with people they met through OLD.
We went to the wedding of my friend's daughter recently - she and her DH, (both early 30's), met through OLD and he's just adorable!

QueenAstrid · 10/04/2024 13:19

I met my lovely DP on Bumble, and before that met a few other nice men (that just turned out not to be for me), so they are out there! Don’t be too put off by all the action shots, they’re probably just trying to show that they’re in decent shape.

SoUnsureWhatToDo · 10/04/2024 13:50

I find a lot of men on OLD just a tad boring. The "I like football, dogs, eating out and travelling" usually means I have no hobbies other than watching the footie every Saturday.

I actively prefer ones with pictures of their motorbikes, since I'm a biker too, so I wouldn't be interested in getting together with a non-biker. I also gravitate towards ones who seem to have the same hobbies I enjoy. I just wish they wouldn't show pics of themselves doing a particular activity I enjoy only to find out it's something they did once 10 years ago and have never touched since.

OfficerPyre · 10/04/2024 14:26

Where are the ‘boring’ men that like watching TV, have jobs and enjoy a nice walk!? I’m OLD in my mid 40s and all the men I’ve communicated with are either sex pests that want photos, sex talk (I block these as soon as they reveal themselves) or men with various issues. I would love to meet a nice/boring/normal man, all the ones that are not sex pests seem to have issues around mental health, past addiction, can’t hold down a job etc.

earinfection · 10/04/2024 19:09

No there aren't. They are all assholes on OLD. And think it's porn...

Meadowfinch · 10/04/2024 19:21

My track record for OLD is not great.

7 dates - 5 individuals.

Men 1. 2 & 3. OK but not much in common. A lot of football and car talk

Man 4. Reasonable conversation, seemed intelligent and kind. I got back from date no. 2 and heard my phone ping. Thought it would be him, saying thanks for a nice time. No, he's sent me an unsolicited photo of his 'member' Block!!

Man 5. - Good first date, good conversation. Offered to make me Sunday lunch as a second date which I thought was quite brave. I got stuck behind a tractor going to his house and arrived 7 minutes late. Only seven. Before I could ring the doorbell. he opened the door and said 'you're late. Where the f**k have you been?' And he wasn't joking. I told him I didn't appreciate being sworn at. He had a hissy fit. I went home. Block !!

After that I rather lost heart 😂
