New man but he shoots as a hobby ...

jumpinjax · 07/08/2023 10:27

He seems lovely but he's told me from the outset that he shoots as a hobby.
I don't have any major feelings about shooting one way or another , because I know so little about it but now told me that he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn and I don't know what I feel ... except maybe pity for the animals.
Would you get rid straight away?

Why though? It's a quick death whereas none of the animals we stun then kill have that, they have an elongated miserable existence being raised in close confines then the kill process for every animal induces terror at some stage. Stunning is often not effective and lunch breaks of workers leave animals on production lines partway through the process.

Now I eat meat I'm not saying only date vegans, but it makes no sense to be against someone who gives an animal a quick death but for someone who pays someone else to give them a slow death.

I've just seen some horrific clips on Youtube of these 'men' shooting into elephants and alligators. None of the ones I found in a quick search are 'clean' kills. These are not skilled hunters, but grinning idiots who pay to be driven or taken to exactly where the animal is and then shoot into it over and over again until it is dead. They can't stalk the animal themselves, are not interested in learning, and they don't have or need to be skilled marksmen to find and kill these poor animals. There is a clip of a horrible man just firing over and over into a poor alligator that is alive and moving for multiple minutes because the idiot can't manage a clean shot. And he's super proud of himself for his 'hunting'.

No sorry. Shooting rabbits or game birds that will be eaten I can be fine with. Big game as a trophy I find deplorable. I’m aware there is an argument it can be part of a conservation tool (a little like game birds make keeping heathland profitable here), but I can’t understand or condone shooting something merely for pleasure/satisfaction.

A controlled shoot of elephants and big cats I think in a reserve . I need to learn more .
And deer also. Again, controlled.

What an absolute sicko. It demonstrates a clear lack of empathy.

I don't understand why anyone would even consider dating that. I wouldn't speak to him again. I also wouldn't be friends with someone who dated someone like that.

belei1922 · 07/08/2023 12:29

Deal breaker for me op

SuperGinger · 07/08/2023 12:30

"Controlled shoot" UGHH these people are beyond disgusting often in league with corrupt governments, poachers and dodgy vets.

Wild animals deserve to live, we've done enough damage to our beautiful planet and these their eco systems have been encroached upon.

TabithaHazel · 07/08/2023 12:31

My DH shoots as a hobby (all the men in his family do), but at a shooting range shooting targets/clay pigeons. If he shot animals for fun though, we wouldn't have got past our first date!

Not really, I just think a lot of people don't know what "big game hunting" is and automatically assumed pheasant or similar. They were wrong.

No, I k is exactly what Big Game hunting is.

What OP said, though, was “he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn”. First, it’s referred to as “hunting” not “shooting” in the context of “Big Game”. Second, without capitalisation, “big” is ambiguous and could refer to a large-scale event at which lots of people convene to shoot pheasant or grouse, even deer at a push. Given how rare it is to meet anyone in the UK who would ever have the opportunity to hunt Big Game, but country pursuits are quite a common activity, it is natural to assume that “shoots as a hobby” in the thread title refers to British game or target shooting. It would have been sensible if the OP to have mentioned the elephants and lions explicitly in the OP, probably even the title.

He obviously has money to burn. I suggest he burn it.
Find another man- they are not an endangered species (more's the pity as they are the world's worst predator)

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 07/08/2023 12:32

This would be a dealbreaker for me. I am a vegetarian and dont use milk ( cant say the same for cheese as I love it , sadly haven't found a decent vegan cheese that I like yet)

Fraaahnces · 07/08/2023 12:32

I don’t care if it’s ducks or elephants. It doesn’t speak well of someone who enjoys killing living creatures. I could understand it if he needed to eat them, but that simply isn’t the case. It’s for pleasure. That’s psychopathy.

Feckedupbundle · 07/08/2023 12:34

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest. In the countryside Where I live, most people hunt and/ or shoot. How would the OP feel about fishing? That's a sport where the catch is a live creature and more often than not,not eaten.

I wonder how many people that say they 'draw the line at murdering animals' are meat eaters!

Look OP, in some areas everyone hunts. Hunting is controlled and regulated. To have a licences they have to do A LOT. Several of my husbands family hunts. They can only hunt in certain seasons, can only hunt certain things each year and a certain amount, can tell pretty much instantly if the animal they're stalking has young even if not with them because they know the signs. They are not allowed to hunt animals with young. They bring back and stock the freezer with what they hunt to eat.

They keep the population under control (if too many are left because unhunted several would die a long slow death of starvation which is much more cruel), and its as free range meat as you can get.

Responsible hunters, fully licenced, follow all rules, eat what they kill, are not a problem. Trophy hunters are.

This man is a trophy hunter though so the rest of your post isn’t relevant in this instance

OhComeOnFFS · 07/08/2023 12:34

Oh god, imagine him coming home and bragging about shooting an elephant. No, throw this one in the bin.

WellDuh · 07/08/2023 12:35

An ex of mine managed a deer population on a big estate. Had venison most weeks over winter! 😋 Only ever shot what would be eaten though, or sold on. The hobby itself didn't bother me but he showed me the guns once which weirded me out for some reason.

Sothisiit · 07/08/2023 12:36

If you eat meat then you are just as culpable as him regarding the killing of animals.
Most of us are very detached from seeing the plastic wrapped tray of meat from the supermarket equating to animal that has been slaughtered.
If the animals he shoots are consumed then personally I have no issue with his hobby.
For me the only shooting I don't understand is game shooting in Africa where say a lion is killed purely as a trophy.

horseyhorsey17 · 07/08/2023 12:36

Turns my stomach so would be an absolute no for me. Anyone who gets pleasure from killing beautiful animals has something wrong with them.

That is disgusting. “Controlled” = Just a way of justifying the killing of wild animals. They’re rounded up, herded into enclosures then blood thirsty tourists kill them for the photo glory. I won’t say what I hope happens.

RoadSignFool · 07/08/2023 12:41

“going on a big game shoot” vs “going on a Big Game shoot”…..this all makes me think of “eats(,)shoots and leaves”

Mothercareyschickens · 07/08/2023 12:41

Pinkitydrinkity · 07/08/2023 11:25

It’s weird for them to brag about it but killing deer is a necessity in the highlands unfortunately. There are quotas that landowners have to meet.

I have to reluctantly accept that, as man has killed their natural enemies (wolves) so artificial means of population control are needed.

However, as I understand it, deer culling is done by a marksman with a high powered rifle and the carcass butchered and sold for food.

They don't sit on top of the dead animal and take pictures to post on FB or the like.

It’s all done quite professionally and carefully and is indeed necessary for population control, but it absolutely is a thing for rich tourists to go deer stalking and take pictures with the hinds and stags they kill.

GalileoHumpkins · 07/08/2023 12:44

Nope, I couldn't find someone that shoots animals attractive.

He should cut out the middle man (innocent animal) and just spend it on a penis enlargement.
