New man but he shoots as a hobby ...

He seems lovely but he's told me from the outset that he shoots as a hobby.
I don't have any major feelings about shooting one way or another , because I know so little about it but now told me that he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn and I don't know what I feel ... except maybe pity for the animals.
Would you get rid straight away?

I've just read more - no that's not ok

If he eats what he shoots, that's fine.

I guess he eats the elephant one bite at a time?!

hattie43 · 07/08/2023 12:11

Deal breaker for me . Absolutely on the animal front but also too many men with access to guns use them against partners .

A controlled shoot of elephants and big cats I think in a reserve . I need to learn more .
And deer also. Again, controlled.

He shoots elephants and big cats? That makes me so sad to think about :(

I have visited Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia and been on guided safaris to see and photograph those animals. I can't fathom how someone could take joy in killing them.

I'm a vegetarian and a big softie for animals, but even if you aren't, consider the kinds of psychological traits associated with people who derive pleasure from hurting animals. There have been many psychological studies done proving links between callous behaviour toward humans and pleasure in hurting/killing animals. In the case of this man, he isn't doing it for food or to control the population, either. He is doing it because he wants to hurt/kill these animals, and he is willing to travel to a foreign country to stalk them down and shoot them.

He sounds disgusting and vile, just a horrible, horrible man. I don't think I could remain friends even with someone willing to be in a relationship with this grotesque person.

I just did a quick google and found two winners sharing your man's preferred hobby: https://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/gossip/stasi-hed-article-1.2311902 Donald and Eric Trump are photographed smiling with the bodies of the big cats and elephant they killed for fun. What else do you think he has in common with these types?

Beeswood · 07/08/2023 12:14

No from me. I don't eat meat or drink milk.

dawngreen · 07/08/2023 12:15

A waste of a life, and a waste of food. The ex forces guy maybe you got used to making do with what was available. And the effects of war?

Augend23 · 07/08/2023 12:15

Deer I could cope with.

Elephants/big cats - no.

I'm not veggie and I've lived in the countryside and butchered an entire deer, so I'm pretty chill. But no one needs to go and shoot endangered species.

x88mph · 07/08/2023 12:16

I’d get rid. I wouldn’t want to be with somebody who takes more pleasure in shooting an animal rather than just being able to marvel at it in its own environment.

imactuallyfine · 07/08/2023 12:16

Why though? It's a quick death whereas none of the animals we stun then kill have that, they have an elongated miserable existence being raised in close confines then the kill process for every animal induces terror at some stage. Stunning is often not effective and lunch breaks of workers leave animals on production lines partway through the process.

Now I eat meat I'm not saying only date vegans, but it makes no sense to be against someone who gives an animal a quick death but for someone who pays someone else to give them a slow death.

BadSkiingMum · 07/08/2023 12:17

Surely there will also be another aspect to this in that he would have a gun licence and keep guns at home?

I used to assume that this was all very tightly regulated, but the Plymouth murders, the murder of Kelly Fitzgibbons and her two daughters and the recent murder of Emma Pattison and her daughter cast a lot of doubt on the vetting arrangements for people keeping guns.

Are you vegan? If not you can’t really complain. I’m vegan and kinda think shooting game is a lot better than the lives that many farm animals have to endure.

I'm vegan but I don't think you can't complain about elephants or lions being killed just because you eat meat. Did you miss the part where he's killing endangered species?

onlylovecanhurtlikethis · 07/08/2023 12:17

Lots of game bird shoots end up in local butchers

Unless you are vegan I think you are being silly

I think that this thread has to win the prize for the drip feed to end all drip feeds!

Big game? Meaning what? Deer? Or rhino? There’s a huge difference.
Many people here will tell you they could never be with someone who hunts lickle animals. Unless they are a vegetarian they can’t really comment.
I’d not go out with someone who hunts endangered species but if I really liked the person I don’t think I’d be put of a person who goes to organised shoots in this country. It’s not that different from the slaughter of animal for food.

It’s probably kinder than the slaughter of food animals (if they’re a decent shot) but I just can’t get my head around someone who actually pays to kill animals for amusement. So it’s a huge no from me, it revolts me.

dawngreen · 07/08/2023 12:21

@imactuallyfine - Why its endangered and its a waste of life and food!

Not really, I just think a lot of people don't know what "big game hunting" is and automatically assumed pheasant or similar. They were wrong.

ThreeLittleDots · 07/08/2023 12:22

Abhorrent. Why don't you know this?!

user9630721458 · 07/08/2023 12:23

This sort of hunting sounds very expensive. Is it a sort of prestige statement of class to trophy hunt? I'm wondering if it's a way to keep up appearances amongst the wealthy.

dawngreen · 07/08/2023 12:15

Is this directed at me? Actually I am a woman 😊 and I posted again immediately after. I’m fine with shooting as a sport, targets, even birds etc. Big game and the disgusting subsequent photograph posing. Absolutely not.

Featherhands · 07/08/2023 12:24

Just so we're all clear. People who shoot pheasants / grouse have absolutely no capacity to eat everything they shoot. It's given away as well and maybe some sold to butchers but most will not be. There's an awful lot of plucking and faffing around which means it gets dumped. A paid shoot will have 300 birds shot in a day. What would you do with it all?

But that's not what I have against pheasant shoots - my problem is the number of birds they release which then sustains and increases the size of the fox populations and makes foxes far far bolder.

We have them strutting around our farm in broad daylight. They then take the lambs and we are in a situation of having to deal with a sizeable fox problem that we wouldn't have if we didn't have shoots that release so many birds. It's not fair on the foxes, or indeed my animals. Shooting foxes isn't pleasant.

So yes, OK - shooting lions, tigers, etc in Africa is hideous but I'd rather we didn't look at UK shoots as having no impact on anything else.

whynotwhatknot · 07/08/2023 12:25

does it matter whther you know about hunting-he shoots cats and elephants for fun!
