New man but he shoots as a hobby ...

He seems lovely but he's told me from the outset that he shoots as a hobby.
I don't have any major feelings about shooting one way or another , because I know so little about it but now told me that he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn and I don't know what I feel ... except maybe pity for the animals.
Would you get rid straight away?

If he eats what he kills, then i'm fine with it. Just for sport then its a no-go for me.

Susieb2023 · 07/08/2023 17:31

Jeez, no, the sense of entitlement and selfishness you must have to take a life for your own thrills and ego would eek into every part of this man’s world.

HARD NO from me.

Charlize43 · 07/08/2023 18:41

Is it possible to get hold of one of his guns (feign interest if you have to) and then shoot him, not kill him, but like... in the foot, to see how he likes it?

I could never be with anyone devoid of compassion and who has a taste for killing.

I could give advice but I think the decision has to be yours at the end of the day. I moved from the city to the country and found my goalposts gradually moved on this issue, so I try not to be judgemental.

Did you move to Africa and take part in shooting drugged up lions?
Just because people aren’t vegan and/or don’t object to hunting to eat it doesn’t mean they support these rich idiots who feel their penis grows when they shoot some poor animal that doesn’t stand a chance and so they can pose for photos with the corpse.
I have lived in the country and have friends who shoot - if they eat what they hunt I don’t have an issue with it.
Nobody eats lions

Did you move to Tanzania?

Sorry, cross post @Hoppinggreen !

Abfab63 · 07/08/2023 19:31

Most game shot in the uk is sent to a butchers / restaurants to be used. So it hopefully won't be going to waste if that helps your decision.

I don't agree with. I'd never do it. But I can see that for some people it's born from tradition and a certain way of life.

I would suggest that it's not something he'll change if it's his hobby as I'd imagine a lot of his friends do the same. So if it's going to bother you in the future don't go there x

Abfab63 · 07/08/2023 19:32

Holy shit ignore my last post I've just seen your next one.

He shoot elephants and big cat. They can't be eaten! AVOID!!!!

EarthSight · 07/08/2023 19:50

jumpinjax · 07/08/2023 10:42

A controlled shoot of elephants and big cats I think in a reserve . I need to learn more .
And deer also. Again, controlled.

Fuck no. I wouldn't care how bloody 'controlled' it is. I find those men pathetic, quite frankly. I know some women participate, but it's such a dick waving exercise to try and soothe a fragile ego.

OP, the reason why some of those men want to hunt big animals, is that is the closest they will get to killing a human being. And they do it for enjoyment for sport.

I'm very sceptical about the 'controlled' aspect as well. Some of these men excuse themselves or others by saying they're doing it for the environment, that it's good for the local economy, but scratch the surface and I can bet you there is a lot of dodgy things going on in that industry.

Sallylovesdaisy · 07/08/2023 20:33

I saw a photo last week of a pair game hunters, with their big kill...a giraffe..a beautiful giraffe- dead for their pleasure. Just heartbreaking!

Exactly the point I was trying to make. Why can't people discuss issues like this any more without trolling and vitriol

caramacyears · 07/08/2023 21:11

So sorry for expressing a view

OrlandointheWilderness · 07/08/2023 21:17

@ExtraOnions thought you may find it interesting that a natural England study commissioned by the RSPB in 2022 found an 800% increase in hen harrier numbers.... with 80% found on grouse moors.
You clearly know absolutely nothing about the management of grouse moorland.

crazeekat · 07/08/2023 21:46

absolutely cruelty to animals. disgusting human. sorry he could be the nicest sweetest man but anyone who kills for sport is just a disgrace. would you date anyone who kills lions and elephants? there is no distinguishing. cruel.

MumGMT · 07/08/2023 21:47

Middlelanehogger · 07/08/2023 10:37

If you grew up in the countryside you have a different attitude to this. It's not about laughing as you slaughter a defenceless helpless being. It's closer to a feeling of being part of nature / part of the circle of life somehow. There are painful deaths in nature without humans. It's hard to explain.

I would talk to him a bit more and ask him what it means to him, how he feels when he's shooting, what is meaningful to him about it.

I grew up in a hunting family (although my father doesn't shoot for ethical reasons) so I get the perspective, although I also have met very annoying city types who rock up and want to bag as many species as possible and just seem to fundamentally miss the point, so I'd advise trying to figure out where he's coming from before making a judgment.

I grew up in the countryside and most people I know are against hunting.

Codlingmoths · 07/08/2023 21:52

Elephants?? And big cats??? Fuck no, I wouldn’t even want to live on the same planet as him and sucks that I do.

SemperIdem · 07/08/2023 22:04

It would be a no for me.

He must know that that’s likely to be the case, for him to have brought it up as he did.

mcmooberry · 07/08/2023 22:21

Yes I would leave immediately. Deer stalking for herd management fine, killing elephants and big cats for fun, not on your nelly.

Ofcourseshecan · 07/08/2023 22:23

I could not like someone who killed for pleasure; in fact the thought sickens me. It’s very different from eating meat — not everyone thrives on a vegan diet. I can understand why vegans think differently, but I don’t agree with them.

Shooting lions etc that are bred in captivity for this purpose is pathetic as well as sick.

ShannonTaylor · 08/08/2023 07:40

Big game as Elephants, giraffes, rhinos i presume. Its sick and twisted. Chasing a defenceless animal down until it tires then shoot it is inhuman. Id kick his butt out.

Hollyppp · 08/08/2023 07:53

Shooting pheasants or deer not a problem with me. As long as they get eaten afterwards.

deer have no natural predators in the U.K. and need culling to keep the food chain in a balance

HulaChick · 08/08/2023 08:01

Totally depends on what and why he shoots!, If he's a country 'boy' or has connections to farming, then there's a definite need to keep the pigeon population under control, as they wreak havoc on crops. Pheasant shooting, although nit my cup of tea, is a huge revenue for the economy and also helps to keep small copses and woodland management going. Small, local shoots nowhere near as harmful as those huge, corporate ones that are organised. If he's just a townie, dressing up in shooting garb and playing at being a country squire, then I'd lose him as quickly as possible! Maybe even talk to him about why you don't like it and use it as folder for a good debate!

holamums · 08/08/2023 08:02

Elephants and big cats!?! Really!?! So he goes out of his way to cause pain and suffering to animals that are extremely intelligent... Definitely a red flag I couldn't live with.

HulaChick · 08/08/2023 08:05

Oh my God, I've just seen reference to elephants and big cats. Absolutely NO WAY would I even think about going out with him. I There's,a,HUGE difference between 'game' as in pheasants and ,game' as in endangered species. Get rid.
