New man but he shoots as a hobby ...

He seems lovely but he's told me from the outset that he shoots as a hobby.
I don't have any major feelings about shooting one way or another , because I know so little about it but now told me that he's going on a big game shoot in Autumn and I don't know what I feel ... except maybe pity for the animals.
Would you get rid straight away?

I’m from a shooting and fishing type family so this wouldn’t bother me if it was UK style shoots; pheasants or grouse for example, or deer stalking I wouldn’t mind.

I eat meat and feel that the birds shot in this way in the UK have a much higher quality of life than any commercially reared chicken.

Maybe you should understand more about what type of shooting he means, ‘big game’ vs ‘big UK grouse shoot’, there’s a huge difference in that.

It's incompatible with my values

Clay pigeon shooting or at targets. Fine. It's not my thing but I appreciate the sportsmanship

Shooting at live animals for fun. Nah. In the bin.

Yep.

A controlled shoot of elephants and big cats I think in a reserve . I need to learn more .
And deer also. Again, controlled.

My friends dad leads shoots for others. He shoots birds and game. The kills are always eaten if found.

It took me by surprise initially that her dad was into shooting. Once I realised the animals have probably had a much happier life, and a cleaner end, than the chicken, lamb and pork I'm very happy to eat from the supermarket, it no longer bothered me.

Whenever I visit his home, I'm always given some delight from the meat shed. He has the best venison steaks I know of. And BBQs at his house are immense.

He is a really kind man, who is a fab dad and grandad.

I wouldn't write this new man off for being into this sort of shooting unless you're a vegetarian.

Oh.

Then scrap my last post.

No no no no no no

TedMullins · 07/08/2023 10:44

I’m a vegetarian and this would be a deal breaker for me. It’s the sport/pleasure aspect, killing an animal for fun is just sick in my opinion. How is that OK, but if children show signs of harming animals it’s a psychopathic trait?

Having said that, I could respect and possibly even date someone with a small free range farm. If animals are raised well and have a nice life roaming fields and are killed humanely and quickly for the purpose of being eaten, I can get on board with that. It isn’t something I’d do personally, but it’s far more ethical and sustainable than sport hunting or industrial level battery farming.

So endangered animals? Oh no, fuck that. Disgusting.

DivingForLove · 07/08/2023 10:46

Elephants?! Fuck that! What a wanker 🤬

HeadNorth · 07/08/2023 10:46

He's shooting elephants! And big cats! And you have to ask other people's opinion?! Come on - how are you not utterly appalled and repulsed by this?

WhatBloodyNow · 07/08/2023 10:46

Nah fuck that. Does he have a really small penis? I always assume this of men who like to bang guns and kill defenceless animals.

MillWood85 · 07/08/2023 10:47

Nope, not a chance. Anyone that kills animals for entertainment/sport is a lowlife.

We live rurally and I absolutely hate shooting season seeing landrovers with loads of pheasants hanging. The commercial ones are the worst.

Lindy2 · 07/08/2023 10:30

Target shooting - fine.

Killing animals for fun - grotesque.

I tend to avoid having grotesque people in my life.

Oh god - absolutely this! He kills animals? For fun? It’s a no!

Quite aside from the vegetarian argument

Don't you find it odd that someone intentionally wants to kill?

If it was to practice his shooting skills etc there are other ways.

But his intention when he shoots is to kill.

That's something I would struggle with. And yes I don't kill animals. Even the big hairy spiders who invade my bathroom. They're trapped and evicted. Killing another living being has never appealed to me.

I am a vegetarian... but I don’t think you need to be to think someone enjoying killing things as a hobby is a dealbreaker tbh.

What kind of cunt chooses to shoot an elephant???

LunaNorth · 07/08/2023 10:49

I can’t get my head round someone seeing an elephant and saying anything other than, ‘Wow!’

I mean, who looks an elephant in the eye and wants to kill it?

Fuck that.

jumpinjax · 07/08/2023 10:49

I asked because I have no idea about this type of thing.
I suppose to me, so many animals are shot for a past time and it's legal and there are clubs for this sort of thing. It's a learning experience for me.

This. I'm not a vegetarian but I can still object to shooting elephants for fun.

Clymene · 07/08/2023 10:50

Killing things for fun is weird

Hbh17 · 07/08/2023 10:51

Shooting is a fantastic, lifelong hobby (altho not something I do).
Shooting game birds in the UK, which are bred for this purpose, is fine. He will probably shoot clays too.
My only hesitation would be if he shot endangered species in Africa, for example - very different.
The shooting fraternity come across as a very decent bunch, they learn discipline as well as skills, and they love the countryside.

Whattodo112222 · 07/08/2023 10:52

SparkleFromWithin · 07/08/2023 10:52

People actually shoot big cats and elephants as a hobby ?

But why ? 🥺
