Rude "famous people"

We have a famous designer at my kid's school, born to a very wealthy family. Her kids are nice
She can be very unfriendly but inconsistently so - will often blank people one day and be friendly the next. Acts quite haughtily with the teachers. At times very abrupt.
She doesn't have to be friends with us civilians - that I fully understand. But what's with the rude behaviour? What's going on there? The school mums are a pretty innocuous bunch and I'd like to think we are friendly and welcoming.

MIL and FIL were fashion lecturers when Stella was an undergraduate, and can confirm everything everyone else has said. Many people were extremely glad when she graduated.

DrSbaitso · 09/10/2021 21:49

@Bagelsandbrie

Piers Morgan. Came into where I worked at a media company for an interview and I had to show him to a room to have his make up done and he was so rude to me. Really awful, so demanding and moany. This was about 20 years ago now…!
Nobody would be surprised by that!

I had this at school. Couldn't work out why this person was hot one day and would blank me the next. Was friendly but inconsistently so.

She's deaf. I didn't know until later ( and with a bit of me persevering in the face of weird blanking incidents) that she couldn't hear me if I was behind her or if she didn't have her hearing aids in, or was low on battery after being on call overnight. She is also shy (I can imagine that other people feel unpredictable because as far as she is concerned she is pretty polite but as far as they are she's inconsistent).

Your designer person might be a raging bitch, but she might also be someone who struggles to process, or who has a mental health issue or who just can't hear your when you pass the time of day.

Her being famous doesn't matter in this - there is no obligation for people who are well known in their field to be "on" at your request, or to be a better class of human.

We are all imperfect. And beautiful in our variations.

@DrSbaitso

Margaret Atwood is a cow.
hahaha I feel like you've been holding that in for a while
Anotherbrokenairer · 09/10/2021 21:51

Haha ...is she involved in 'property' by any chance?

LitCrit · 09/10/2021 21:52

@FancyLampshade

Is it Laurence Llewelyn Bowen Grin
joy
forgotmyusernamagain · 09/10/2021 21:53

@LittlePearl not Sophie no

Not entirely surprised to see Alison Hammond mentioned here

IncessantNameChanger · 09/10/2021 21:53

There was a famous musician at my sons school. I didnt recognise him.and I doubt most people would but you would have heard of his band. He was very quite and normal. The only non normal thing about him was that he didnt seem to chat to any of the other parents in the same way as most do. Definitely nothing snooty about him. I think he probably just wanted some normality where his kid was involved. Be there, be a good dad, be chummy with his own arty set.

@SkiingIsHeaven

Cherie Blair.

In fact I shouted rude at her. Horrible rude woman.

She was perfectly pleasant when I met her.
SophieRaworthsDress · 09/10/2021 21:56

Phew

Oldnews · 09/10/2021 21:58

Amanda holden - has tried to get free or discounted services from companies I've been connected to more than once and has been rude and abrupt when they've not been given. I've also heard rumours from some of her home employees that she's pretty unpleasant at home and to work with.

VanGoghsDog · 09/10/2021 21:59

A current member of the cabinet who is rocketing upwards is one of the worst people I've ever had the misfortune to meet. Utterly self obsessed.

That could be any number of people!!

Nah, I don't hold it back!

Had to interview a female British crime writer once in front of an audience . It was not the first time I'd interviewed authors . She was the only author who supplied her own questions !
Although she writes very gritty , East end gangster type fiction , but she was very up herself and haughty .

UppityDownitty · 09/10/2021 22:04

@acornfed - does she make her own homemade Christmas decorations?

That will be Martine Cole then??
ddl1 · 09/10/2021 22:06

From your description, it sounds more as though she is somewhat lacking in social skills/ social graces, rather than rude in a hostile sense (unless there's more than you're saying). Being excellent as a designer is perfectly compatible with not being particularly good at interacting with groups of unfamiliar people. She may be just a snob, but I wouldn't assume it.

LeanToGreen · 09/10/2021 22:06

Apparently Alison Hammond is really up herself and demanding. A friend met her whilst on holiday once.

I’ve met Alison Hammond a few times. She’s always been lovely, very friendly.

ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff · 09/10/2021 22:07

@TheLittleRedToothbrush

Me thinks she may be in hotels too ? Anyway I nominate Phillip Schofield as the biggest arse I've ever met !
If I see Phil appear on another advert on my TV my fist will be going through it.
orangeautumnleaves · 09/10/2021 22:08

I thought Alison Hammond was lovely.

Philip scholfield, came across as very rude and arrogant and this was about 30 years ago!

CurryLover55 · 09/10/2021 22:09

I haven’t met Alison Hammond but I don’t think I’d want to. She really annoys me!
