The Brave Babes Battle Bus - Step Into Our Christmas Thread!

Hello, I'm Mouse Smile

A HUGE welcome to the Bus!

This is the one and only Gerald. Over the years, we've travelled far and wide gathering some truly remarkable Babes along the way, all of whom have been (and remain to be) at different stages of their own personal journey to sobriety or controlled drinking, depending on what it is that they want to achieve.

We have those who drink daily, those who drink occasionally, and also those who have been sober for some time. The one thing that you won't find here, is any judgey knickers! Grin We're ALL here because at one point or another, we've hit our own "rock bottom" and then smashed the shit out of the FUCK IT button! (makes a note to order a new FUCK IT button)

This is without doubt one of the hardest times of the year for many of us, what with Christmas parties, alcohol on tap, supermarkets who have offers galore of various tipples stacked from floor to ceiling, and EVERY advert on TV shows you what an amazingly cool person you can be if you were drinking whatever brand of alcohol they're flogging! Even Christmas puddings and Brandy creams are tempting fate because as soon as you digest even a small amount of alcohol, it makes your body crave more, just like smoking, medication and recreational drugs................

Then there's the gifts that you're given! Champagne Truffles, Liquors, wines, spirits, you name it! So unless you've told people about your planned journey, people assume that buying gifts like that completely acceptable. So, some may feel obliged to consume such gifts and why not? It's Christmas after all. Then we have the New Year festivities..... parties, friends and family over to have drinks because you'll stop drinking after New Years' Day won't you?

It's so damn hard not to drink if that's what you've been doing all year anyway before you even reach this time of year!! How will you cope with your Great Aunt who will check for dust by running finger over ever surface, or Uncle knobhead who will be there in his cream suit, with that suspicious stain on it and his burgundy shirt asking for a Babycham! Also, let's not forget the in-laws/out-laws! We can sometimes put so much pressure on ourselves that we convince ourselves that we DESERVE that glass or seven of wine etc.

At the end of the day, if you want to drink, then you will. I appreciate that doesn't sound supportive but it's certainly true in my case. As I have said before, the most amazing thing about this Bus and those who travel along with it, is the fact that every single one on board has a story, a reason why they're here, and we all need support in one form or another. Yes, alcohol may be the one thing that we ALL have in common but it goes way deeper than that doesn't it? Life, love and laundry for a start! Grin

Even if you're not ready to stop or cut down on your drinking yet, that's fine! You're still welcome to hop aboard the marvellous Gerald. We're a very varied bunch of Babes but we welcome anyone in need of support, even if you're not ready to say everything that you want to yet, or you feel the need to name change, that's fine! Just know that we're here for YOU for as long as you need to be.

Happy birthday, Ma and Mouse! Flowers. Ma I’m treading on your heels having just turned 52. I had a ‘festive salad’ (brought to the table when the restaurant owner found out I was celebrating my birthday - the restaurant doesn’t do cake, hence the salad). Grin

AnneBoleynsHead · 14/01/2019 21:33

Happy Birthday Ma & Mouse
I will be 51 in a couple of months. 50 years has gone quicker than the last 14 days AF Grin!
Actually doing ok, bar 1 or 2 pangs, but already counting down to February- as much as part of me would like to be AF long term the other part of me is terrified of it.
I can't seem to move on from the same old refrain of "I could just have 1" - yes, rightConfused

Weeweewoman · 14/01/2019 22:18

Belated happy birthday, Ma, Mouse and Crafty. Ma, hope your heating comes back soon, brr.

All good here.

Todayisanewday75 · 15/01/2019 16:40

Thanks for the welcomes. And thanks sweet for suggesting multivitamins, I actually bought some a while ago but kept forgetting to take them, probably because I was hungover most mornings.

I am impressed by those of you who can go out and drink but then come home and stop, I think for me not drinking is easier.

Has anyone tried Sea Arch non alcoholic gin? I came across it when looking for a change from seedlip. It is made locally to me so I thought I’d order some. It seemed really expensive but thinking about it realistically it’s just two days worth of wine at the rate I was drinking.

SweetLathyrus · 15/01/2019 17:20

Hi Babes.

Belated happy birthday, Ma, Corvid, Mouse Flowers

God I'm tired, I'm too busy to be bored, but I'm fed up with not being able to exercise!

Today, SO many small things I forget to do for myself because of the booze. Why is it when I'm drinking the 2 minute timer on the toothbrush seems to take forever?

Starting to notice AF improvements now. My cheeks are less red, if I wake up in the night I can get back to sleep, concentration is better, the glass recycling box only has DH's IPA bottles and food jars in it, and I'm definitely less anxious. And there's the money in the bank!

Craftycorvid · 15/01/2019 18:22

Thanks for all the birthday wishes and thanks Wee for the link! Grin

efc1878 · 15/01/2019 19:18

Happy Birthday to ma mouse and crafty and best wishes for the year ahead.

I’ve started low carb bootcamp- not posting but following and getting ideas.

dementedma · 15/01/2019 20:59

thanks all for the birthday wishes. still no heating so once more in bed early keeping warm. AF today after birthday yesterday which I'm pleased about as previously that would have been the fuck it button.

tomorrow I'm off to the airport to pick up.........Richard! Home from China for 3 weeks, haven't seen him since this time last year. for Newbies, Richard is my brother whose life and death battle with alcohol was played out on here some years ago.

SweetLathyrus · 15/01/2019 21:13

Ma, an extra late birthday present! Now get your bed-socks on and get cosy!

How's everyone doing tonight? I REALLY wanted a glass of wine on Monday night - late home from work, first day back etc. Fortunately, there was none in the house, and I was on painkillers anyway. It was a really strong craving, but it was also really, really short. By the time I had hobbled from the kitchen to the living room it was gone. Sometimes, we just need to wait for a moment.

Slingsanderrors · 15/01/2019 21:16

Back on day 2 here, drank at the weekend but not as much as previously. Am trying to lose weight too (having just booked a week in Spain in May with my friend), not doing a specific diet but smaller portions and no snacking. I seem to have lost 3 pounds in 2 weeks which I’m happy about.
I feel less bloated, am sleeping well and even better as someone said earlier, if I wake in the night I can go back to sleep.
In bed now with book and tea.
Night babes!

efc1878 · 15/01/2019 21:24

ma hope you get heating sorted but very pleased your brother is visiting.

sweet sorry to hear you need painkillers hope it’s something that is on the mend.

slings well done on the weight loss! I’m off to be before I fall into a box of cereal!

SweetLathyrus · 15/01/2019 21:31

efc, I had bilateral EVLA (laser treatment in both legs) for varicose veins, I'll be bruised and sore for a couple of weeks, but will have glorious pins in time for Summer!

Sleep well, Slings

LookingforHope · 16/01/2019 00:36

Ooh Get well soon Sweet, and belated birthday wishes Corvid Seem to have insomnia Hmm Am getting old!

SweetLathyrus · 16/01/2019 06:29

Morning All.

I seem to have a little bit of a boing this morning - mental rather than physical!

Busy day, lecture, meeting, marking, theatre!

Stay strong, be kind to yourselves, and be the best Babes you can be.

venusandmars · 16/01/2019 09:31

For anyone trying to loose weight this is an amusing website WEIGHT EQUIVALENTS

I found 60lbs particularly funny (easily amused). So far this year I've lost a guinea pig and 6 Krispy Kreme donuts Grin

I've had a productive morning so far, and I've got halfway through my massive admin mountain - not actually done any of it, but sorted it into piles and realised that it's not as daunting as I thought it was. I would never have been tackling that at 7.45am if I'd been hungover!

efc1878 · 16/01/2019 18:53

sweet sounds painful but worth it. Hope your day wasn’t too busy!

venus that website is hilarious- my dad has been losing weight- the same amount as the cheese eaten by an American in a year- he’ll be chuffed when I him!

Very very busy day in work and nothing really to do tonight but I’m going to have some sparkling water (cry to bootcamp banning tea)

SmallFox · 16/01/2019 19:52

hello all. Hope you're doing well. Sweet have fun at the theatre, wonder what you're seeing.

I'm doing fine, a bit bored tbh which is unsurprising (the excitement at not being hungover can only last so long!) but am really busy at work and filling up the rest of the time with mindfulness stuff, trying to be calm around the children (that is harder than giving up booze, frankly, though the abstinence is certainly helping me in not flying off the handle so much) and generally trying to be a bit healthier. I've signed up to do hot yoga, in a fit of delirium - now seriously regretting it but have paid my fees. Am a bit hazy about what it is and more importantly, what to wear. I fear my usual baggy cover all stuff is going to boil me! But surely I can't be expected to squeeze and squiggle myself into teeny yoga tops and stuff?

And whilst the boingy zeal of the first week or two is fading as this becomes more normal, I'd echo what Sweet said about starting to feel better. I'm less red, less bloaty, less grumpy and less anxious. And oh the sleep. So, what's not to like really. Keep reminding me of that.

Hope everyone's ok.

dementedma · 16/01/2019 20:25

venus I've lost an ostrich egg. Now there's a sentence I never thought I would write!

DH has slouched off to work in the huff because there's no money. Well, get a fucking better paid job then you lazy cunt! (That feels better)

Boiler man came back and "fixed" the boiler which lasted until i tried to run a bath before it conked out again. sigh
On the plus side, AF again tonight so 14/16 for me. Hospital tomorrow to get results of my MRI scan. Fingers crossed please Babes.

efc1878 · 16/01/2019 20:52

ma can’t believe the boiler broke straight away but well done on the loss of an ostrich egg! Hope your MRI results are all clear.

small I love hot yoga- Most ive been to haven’t been very hot. Leggings and a short sleeve t shirt will be fine. Drink plenty of water tonight and before you go. Take a small towel to mop up sweat and some water to sip when you are in class.

Hot yoga was one of the things that helped me massively to cut down my alcohol about 8 years ago- I got such a feeling of peace from the class, and there was no way I wanted to go with a hangover! Really hope you enjoy it!

Weeweewoman · 17/01/2019 00:06

V busy, working late. Still AF but as one of you said, novelty slightly wearing off.

Need to remember how great this is. Calmer, more confident, more focused. Restoring kids confidence and setting them example. Much smoother mornings although still leave getting up until the last possible moment cos its so lovely in bed.

Much more productive. Actually enjoying a bit of graft.... Without my usual 'reward' of a glass of vino or five. Haven't been focusing on weight or skin/appearance but can't be doing any harm.

Okay. That helps, especially when I remember how ashamed I felt after last huge binge. I can still feel it, ouch.

Hugs to all, too tired to nc. Xx
