Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you would love to attend Pip's wedding with Natasha and the starry twins, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-12-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Starting the new thread a bit early as I'm not sure I'll have much internet access for the next few days. Fill up the old one first. And then - over to you!

(Credit for the thread title goes to @TripleSulko.)

Are L and R so strapped for cash that they can’t afford to pay for the fencing? Expecting the landowner to pay set-up costs seems the biggest flaw in their plan. They should cover those, sort out all the admin/insurance etc and pay some sort of rent to the landowner and they might be taken a bit more seriously. I’m not sure why Martin is so interested in the proposal- it’s not going to make much of an impact on BL’s bottom line however busy the venture is. Business SLs are always handled so badly.

No way Amber would go for Gordon. It will be an influencer nonsense like Bear, River or Fox.

Actual footage of @BeardieWeirdie just in.

Edward William - with Teddie / Teddy (?) for everyday is a possibility. Teddy Grundy sounds a darling.

I can see George liking Liam, but not Amber. Liam Grundy sounds … a tiny bit of a bruiser.

MorningCoffeePlease · 30/09/2026 12:34

Teddy sounds a lovely name. So they probably won't go for it.

TottersBlankly · 30/09/2026 12:48

Teddy Grundy is a Carter descendant. As is Martha Carter - who is also an Archer descendant. It’s a stretch but I think it makes Teddy part of the Archer clan?

MorningCoffeePlease · 30/09/2026 12:49

Emma's now a millennial in Amber's opinion, a bit different from what she got called the first time they met.

TottersBlankly · 30/09/2026 12:50

Yup! The past is definitely another country in that instance.

LaMarschallin · 30/09/2026 12:53

TripleSulko · 30/09/2026 05:54

I’m guessing it will be Edward and Bear for short.

"Here is Edward "Bear" Grundy-Gordon, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Christopher Carter. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there really is another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. And then he feels that perhaps there isn't."

That's a very loose connection.
Martha's grandmother was an Archer, and the new baby is her cousin once removed on the other side.

I’m not quite so hairy as that (plucking away since 40s kicked in) - I’m named after a Brianism when he feared a crusty take-over of Home Farm as Kate set up Spiritual Home.

Every so often I have a quick run-through to work out who in Ambridge is not in some way connected to an Archer. It's usually a small pool, and often there is a marriage or partnering that brings in the outliers, though we may be safe from Mick and Joy marrying in... Lynda and Robert of course are the grandparents of Mungo, and Lilian is also his grandparent. Rex and Toby were only related insofar as their long-dead aunt was married to Phil for a year or so back in the fifties, but then Toby sired an Archer baby and Rex, as Rosie's uncle, became Archer-adjacent. Sid, and Kathy and Jamie, and Jolene were not, but then Kenton moved in with Kathy, Sid died, and his widow Jolene married Kenton (and now Kathy and Jamie are both gone anyway). The Grundys are all tainted by William having sired Phoebe and Emma being the sister of someone with an Aldridge husband; Aldridges count as Archers. And so on.

I think at the moment Alan and Usha, Joy, and Mick are not Archer related in some way. Carol is dead and no longer counts, and I think Anna doesn't live in Ambridge ? (Yet?) And we have the recently-invented Esme. Any more?

George's son is an Archer twice over: via Martha and via Phoebe.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 30/09/2026 13:49

Bear, Fox and River aren't exactly new are they. A friend's nephew was named Bear and he's 10 now.

What's the connection between the baby and Phoebe, other than Phoebe is Martha's cousin on the other side?

My cousin once removed married into someone related to an aristocratic family.
It doesn't make me connected to that family.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/09/2026 13:56

Phoebe's father is Roy Tucker. (I want to write 'was' because of poor Ian Pepperell's death, but Roy is still alive and improbably living in Bulgaria.) The Tuckers have managed to remain Archer-free (since Brenda and Tom split up without progeny) but on the other hand not a single one of them now lives in Ambridge.

William didn't sire Phoebe Roy did. Emma is the sister of someone with an Aldridge ex wife surely?

Am I listening to the same The Archers?

Fat Rosie is connected with MJN Air by dint of Herc being her grandfather.

How come Emma was a boomer last year but is now a millennial? Why do people younger than me get called boomers when I'm from generation X?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 30/09/2026 14:31

Yes, I have clearly been having a bad day with a cat going to the vet (and we won't know what's wrong until bloods come back). This isn't helping me think, so apologies for that load of bunkum: but Emma being touched by the Archer taint still works, given she's the baby's grandmother. Susan was so proud of being related to the Aldridges (who clearly count as Archers), while Jennifer's cry of horror, "Oh Brian, I'm related to a Horrobin!" echoes to this day.

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 30/09/2026 14:44

I was catching up on a couple of soaps last night and on both something important was found when putting out the bin.

Nobody in a soap can hang on to their positive pregnancy test or dispose of it - it is always found by someone who will tell someone. If it's left in a pub loo, it will be assumed to be done by someone other than the person who used it.

Hope the AskCat makes a good recovery. 🐈

That could be a potential very good side-effect of the dog field, to bring outsiders into the village in a situation where they could talk to each other. Fresh blood.

So different from the golf course, the rewilding, the bird hide, the pub, the cafe.

It's almost as though nobody wants to talk to the Ambridgoisie.

I was thinking exactly the same.
I'm Gen X, my children are Millenials and their children are still toddlers.
I didn't know Emma had been called a Boomer, but it's a big step from there to Millenial if she was.

Just checked: Emma was born 1984, which makes her an early millennial, I think.
She had George at age 20/21, and George became a father at 21, so that explains why Emma became a grandmother around 20 years younger than I did.
I think I prefer it my way (just as well, I know!)

Every1ElseInKnowsley · 30/09/2026 16:35

No more new characters please, @DeanElderberry ,unless they are like Natasha or Jakob.
@LaMarschallin , same here. I had young parents but they had old parents. They basically sent us off to uni to find themselves caring for parents.
Somewhere in between is probably ideal.
(by older parents I mean mothers in their mid-40s with much older husbands)

Hannah (hardly speaks) and Martyn Gibson are both unArchered.

How can Emma have ever been a boomer? I was born in the last year of the boomers which was 1964. All a load of bunkum anyway, I don't feel like I've got much in common with people born 20 years before me, they're more or less my parents' generation given my parents were 25 when they had me.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 30/09/2026 19:01

She wasn't. I think the idea was to show Amber up as a young person with strong opinions but little grasp of the meaning of words.

Then this is for you (and me). I agree it is all bunkum but I can identify more with this.
