Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Over to you!

Thanks for new thread!!

the joy/police scene was an example of unnecessary expenditure imo

LillianGish · 05/05/2025 08:37

Checking in. Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g. Losing the will to listen, but I always enjoy the thread.

OnlyFrench · 05/05/2025 08:49

Is it too much to hope that something is found on Mick’s laptop that gets him out of Ambridge and Joy’s life?

echt · 05/05/2025 08:57

Excellent thread title, and thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

BeatriceBatchelor · 05/05/2025 08:58

Thanks Gasp

Police on TA always sound wrong. Exhibit A: Sgt Harrison Burns.

EBearhug · 05/05/2025 09:09

Rochelle is clearly going to end up with Rex because of giving herself in.

DeanElderberry · 05/05/2025 09:16

Thanks Gaspode. Some farming would be nice, but problematic teas with or without blinis are the sort of thing that back in the golden olden days could split the village and the discussion boards into sharply opposed factions for weeks.

CarlaH · 05/05/2025 09:49

FizzingAda

The cricket programme you referred to in the previous thread was called Outside Edge. I really enjoyed it.

Closing my eyes and wishing very, very hard.

Sorry, wrong thread!

Bruisername · 05/05/2025 10:04

I really couldn’t care less about joy and Rochelle and wish they’d stick it in an afternoon drama instead. It’s all so yawnsome

and if Rochelle gets offer for being helpful I will be really annoyed - I’m hoping saskia is going to throw her under the bus

and nothing came of the poison threat? The whole thing was so pathetic it makes me cross every time I think of it!!

Godesstobe · 05/05/2025 10:10

Thanks for the new thread.

They have the money to pay for Lawrence I see. Is he cheaper than the long established characters we actually want to hear from?

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 05/05/2025 10:16

Peggy will be popping off soon, no doubt.

Bruisername · 05/05/2025 10:22

Since January - how many superfluous characters have there been? Every new character sucks a little bit more of the soul out of the show

laurence
panto dame
saskia and carl
police
Rochelle!

plus last year we had scamgate, the MP (why?)

I suppose Usha is going to get her moment in the sun at least

I have a question about devices. When the police take someone's devices (phones) when they are tangentially related to a suspect in something - what happens then? The investigation could go, but what about their lives? my season tickets are on my phone (cheaper) and 2FA for online banking etc etc

Are you supposed to just get a spare out of the cupboard and reinstall things? you can't always have things installed twice.

Loved the Cricket Shit Talk. That's how i remember village cricket. As for teas, yes they were super competitive (Yorkshire village). Ours were always a huge spread of (Yorkshire) High Tea - so a bit like an afternoon tea with other things lobbed in like pork pies, sausage rolls, scotch eggs etc. All finger foods though.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/05/2025 10:28

I love the sound of those teas, @Brefugee, but I marvel that anyone was able to play cricket after a spread like that.

I do hope we've heard the last of Saskia. Nasty piece of work.

The teas were strictly after the match. One day village matches had a break for lunch (can't remember who provided them) then a short tea break (for tea, juice and orange quarters) then tea after the match. There was usually a keg of beer. But wives and families of players also partook.

They're meant to take every device, so you shouldn't have a spare left in the cupboard.

It would be really difficult for things like season tickets, but there must be processes in place for when people lose phones for other reasons. Could be an expensive few days, though.

LillianGish · 05/05/2025 11:23

Listening to Victory in Ambridge while I get on with some chores and it occurred to me that the reason we no longer hear from any regular characters in The Archers and instead feel as though we are listening to a one-off R4 drama is because all the regular actors have been away recording a one-off R4 drama. It's the worst of all possible worlds.

SunshineBirdSong · 05/05/2025 11:24

Hello. Placemarking! But having listened to ep 1 and 2 of victory at ambridge or whatever its called...I took it as a story based in some familiar places of bygone age however did find it hard to follow! Catching up on Sundays ep now so not ready the commentary here!

stilldumdedumming · 05/05/2025 11:26

@BrefugeeI have been in that position. Quite rightly I suppose, the police don’t care about your season tickets etc. they take the devices. We got our back fairly quickly maybe 2 weeks or so but they were just ruling us out.
Based on my experiences I also have a new found respect for the ‘no comment’ route. I used to think it meant you had something to hide but there’s a lot more to it than that.

Sidebeforeself · 05/05/2025 11:33

Next episode:
Sound of a phone ringing
Usha: Hello?
Joy: Is that you Usha pet?
Usha: Yes..who’s this?
Joy: It’s me , Joy pet. You wont know us cos I know you’ve been living under a rock for ages now. I was wondering as your the counties only solictor, like, whether you could give us some legal advice, pet.
Usha: Im sure you don't need to worry. Everything will be fine.No-one ever goes to prison in Ambridge…oh, hang on…

TottersBlithely · 05/05/2025 12:18

Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g!

I hadn’t noticed it was possible to listen to Ep2 of Victory in The World’s Most Boring Drama Olympics? If I could I would do that now so I don’t have to go to the effort of trying to remember who they all are by the time it’s broadcast. But Ep 2 doesn’t see to be available pre-broadcast?

LillianGish · 05/05/2025 12:42

The World’s Most Boring Drama Olympics - quite @TottersBlithely. And yet featuring all the actors who have been missing in action from the real story (thus rendering the real story hopelessly unrealistic).

If a police investigation meets the threshold for seizure of devices then it’s tough luck for the owner. They can take them and keep them for as long as the investigation is ongoing. It is hard on people who live with those suspected of a crime but who haven’t done anything wrong themselves.

In real life we could assume Rochelle has refused legal assistance because she will have been offered free legal advice repeatedly by the custody officer. There would be no need to phone Usha unless she was your preferred choice of solicitor.
