Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed. We don't all agree on all points and most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think a stained glass window marking the birth of newborn twins is just what Ambridge needs, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please. We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Title composed in haste, making use of @Octothorpe's lovely coinage of Leonard Llewellyn-Bowen and @TheLassWiADelicateAir's terrific description of St. Smugula's mission to the heathen wasteland of far flung Sunderland, both from the last thread

I've abandoned the use of an emoji in the title, having been alerted by another thread recently to the fact that it makes it difficult for people with visual problems to use assistive software.

I won't say much more about The Archers, as I'm still feeling extremely jaundiced about the programme at the moment. Fingers crossed it takes a turn for the better over the next few days. It was good to hear Helen, Lee and Joy again tonight. Less delighted to hear the loathsome George. What a numpty not to recognise pheasant chicks! His Dad would be far from impressed.

Over to you!

I disagree @TeenDivided

Jazzer's behaviour has been a bit off since Grey Gables, for me, as I said. But taking time off work sick to spend the morning on the sofa with Chelsea didn't feel quite right. Possibly should have mentioned to Tracy first.

I don't think there's anything 'off' about his relationship with Chelsea. The 'OK to change your mind' thing was wrong but, I think, well meant.

petalroses · 25/10/2022 17:25

I was talking about Jazzer's behaviour generally being off, as I believe I said @CaptainMyCaptain

Fink · 25/10/2022 16:39

I'm fairly sure Jazzer is supposed to be the same age as Ed, born 1984. Tracy was born in 1975. So he's now 38 and she's 47. He's 20 years older than Chelsea. I think he doesn't see himself as a step-father figure, more like an older brother, witness the teaching to ride a motorbike debacle. He definitely has kept well out of Tracy's parenting decisions.

Well apart from barging round to Alastair and making a huge fuss about Alastair not telling him that Chelsea had spoken to Alastair. That was none of his business on several levels.

But there he was more angry at Alistair not having told him even though Alistair was supposed to be his friend. It was about the friendship between the two men. He hasn't interfered between Tracy and Chelsea or Brad.

TeenDivided · 25/10/2022 17:53

I think Jazzer's heart is in the right place, even if he sometimes gets things wrong. In real life people don't always do things perfectly, or think things through before they act, or understand another viewpoint without it being pointed out to them. He means well, is doing his best, and given his lack of experience being a father figure or whatever isn't making too bad a fist of it imo.

But he was interfering. It was absolutely none of his business. He was way out of order demanding that Alastair should have told him.

He isn't Chelsea's father and he shouldn't be behaving like one. He's a creep. His behaviour towards Alastair was appalling.

TeenDivided · 25/10/2022 18:13

I don't think he's a creep. Yes he was wrong about Alistair - he apologised (didn't he?)
He's not trying to behave like a father, but as I said a 'father figure or whatever' - an adult in her life she can talk to and feel supported by. Sometimes Mums are too close. Auntie Susan would be hopeless (too biased) as would Uncle Neil .(doesn't like talking about emotions).

GoldenCupidon · 25/10/2022 18:15

No sign that Jazzer is a creep. Even for this thread @TheLassWiADelicateAir you do have an unusually jaded perspective on things.

After the Gray Gables incident he makes my flesh crawl and his insisting on calling Chelsea his "mate" is creepy too.

I agree. Most of us aren't perfect we're just doing the best we can with what we've got.

@TheLassWiADelicateAir , do you enjoy anything about The Archers?

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/10/2022 19:42

His "it's not too late to change your mind" comment was unasked for, bang out of order and none of his business. It was in the context of her expressing nervousness about the whole thing, and wasn’t “it’s not too late” it was that she could change her mind whenever she wanted, to stop her feeling trapped by her decision, in other words, making it easier for her to go ahead knowing she could if necessary change her mind later.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/10/2022 19:42

his some of his behaviour (inability to handle basic finances, keeping a pet tarantula as if he was 13 years old) mark him as someone who just hasn't fully grown up. Don’t grown-ups keep tarantulas?

Madcats · 25/10/2022 20:06

Can anybody remind me how Jazzer ended up in Ambridge?

I vaguely remember the ketamine, and the "over-sexed milkman" stages, but what happened to his parents?

ILoveShula · 25/10/2022 20:15

He was a friend of Ed's from Meadow Rise.

@TheLassWiADelicateAir , do you enjoy anything about The Archers?

Not at the moment. I'm bored of the Horrobins. I don't like any of them. I thought it was telling that sex pest creep Jazzer was the best of the string of boyfriends who'd come and gone- that says a lot about Tracey's parenting skill.

That scene in the waiting room- Tracey being thick as to why Ben was there; Chelsea doing her usual grumpy whining and Ben wallowing in a bizarre cocktail of self- pity and look at me , I'm such a good guy virtue signalling. And, yes Chelsea it is all your fault. I take it Tracey's final words are supposed to signal the pregnancy is indeed going ahead.

Kate is always value for money, and as someone said "go Kirsty"

OverArmour · 25/10/2022 21:09

I agree on sex pest Jazzer, horrible scene at Grey Gables.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 25/10/2022 21:17

Do random unaccompanied men usually wander unchallenged into abortion clinics?

JanglyBeads · 25/10/2022 21:19

What were Tracey's final words?

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 25/10/2022 21:32

Something about "now she isn't going ahead with the pregnancy"

WhoppingBigBackside · 25/10/2022 21:56

@OverArmour , the purpose of that was to make sure that Tracey would be skint.
@TheLassWiADelicateAir , yes, Kate is always value for money. BOOP for Kursedy.

I suppose it could have been at a hospital, and could have been in a waiting room anyone could access?

I think that’s the problem, it was a bit out of character for him, they needed something to happen and so shoehorned that in and it hit a bad note.
