The Archers - What’s your poison? Alice is legless, the fish are lifeless and Pip is clueless (Discussion #85)

Even if you don't have a leg(?), a life or a clue, Welcome to the first ever 85th Archers thread! Smile

Wild speculation and sensible questions always welcome - especially any newcomers.

A little game for the weekend, inspired by Timetogetup0630 and Gruach on the last thread:

Invent an explanation for how your username was the inspiration for an Archers storyline, character, etc - be creative!

My username is telling the story of Toby, Adam and Ian, although it probably needs some punctuation: Dad! Dad/Dad? Grin

dairyfarmerswife - bit too easy for you, but as professional country folk maybe you could judge the winner? Star

Credit to MrsGrindah for the clever thread title

Gnother it was years before I twigged that a Hartebeest was an animal like a wildebeest. I just assumed that “that dreadful hearty beast” was a generic term for some other hunting trophy in the room !

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2018 12:06

Thanks Dadx3 Silly me it's "Observer of the Highway Code" Blush

I didn't know that Jessie I can't say I even noticed the line about the "hartebeest" Blush

DadDadDad · 08/02/2018 12:22

ppeat - I wasn't going to mention it but it's also 97 horsepower.

I think F&S's "Reluctant Cannibal" is one of their best, if only for the line "if the Juju hadn't wanted us to eat people, he wouldn't have made us of meat". (I've also been known to use "chief assistant to the assistant chief" to describe my middle management role at work Hmm ).

Getting back to TA, I thought the scene where Chris was on the phone to his mum, and Alice was saying she had to prioritise her parents over his could have been lifted straight from a MN AIBU thread. "MIL thinks I should drop everything for FIL with a bit of flu, when my DF is going through a serious crisis..."

I wonder if SW scan MN etc for story ideas?

OP posts:
Eastpoint · 08/02/2018 13:07

If there’s some F&S in the background at Peggy’s in April we’ll know they do. MIL is late 80s & DH said she had one of their records (not as limited to Radio 4 as my mother).

EBearhug · 08/02/2018 13:10

I pronounce gnu as wildebeest. It's easier.

I expect Adam saw a lot of them in his Africa days.

TheAntiBoop · 08/02/2018 13:28

We're hoping to see the great migration this year so will hopefully see a lot of gnu

Alice was being a total bitch. Why are they trying to make all the young female characters horrible - pip and Alice obviously, Emma has had some particularly vicious moments, even Kirsty has been annoying. And I know Jenny isn't young but they seem to be emphasising her negatives too

TheAntiBoop · 08/02/2018 13:29

But ebearhug- do you pronounce it with a v or a w?

trevortrevorslattery · 08/02/2018 13:49

Ahhh @jessiemcjessie I also used to have "All Aboard" - what a lovely memory you've dredged up.
I think it also had Arthur Askey singing about a bee.. BZZZZ if you like but dwooon't sting me Grin

GnotherGnu · 08/02/2018 16:56

Yes, but that might be short-lived in today's climate when people hear some of F&S's songs, such as "Have some madeira, m'dear"

Not sure that the Song of Patriotic Prejudice would go down too well, either.

I've finally caught up with a podcast of Ep 1 of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme today - TA is about the only Radio 4 programme I don't listen to several weeks in arrears. So I finally got Eastpoint's reference. I must say, I loved JF's new Gnu song, absolutely masterful. A worthy successor.

I'll get back to discussing TA soon, promise.

ppeatfruit · 08/02/2018 17:24

Cheers Dadx3 Of course 97 horse power!!!!.

I do love the "no complaining" idea of Lynda's for Lent on TA it would be wonderful for us on this thread too wouldn't it eh eh???? Grin Grin.

I don't mind Pip actually, her and Toby do seem to be getting on well. Great reaction of Ruth's to the idea of Tobe's helping on Brookfield!

JessieMcJessie · 08/02/2018 17:28

What? A Gnu and a wildebeest are the same thing?! I had no idea Blush

Trevor All Aboard has so many memories for me. My favourite was My Boomerang won’t Come back. It’s probably banned now as disrespectful to aboriginal Australians.

Back to The Archers.... I can’t believe that jolene would really have got angry with Nic about mentions Mr and Mrs to Emma. She’s not usually a cow.

RubyLennoxExists · 08/02/2018 17:58

Piece of BBC trivia - Stephanie Flanders, former economics (?) correspondent of the BBC is the DD of Mr Flanders.
Didn't there used to be a TV advert with a gnu? 60's or 70's, maybe selling tea? Maybe Typhoo?

MikeUniformMike · 08/02/2018 18:06

And she is alleged to be an ex-girlfriend or have dated both Ed Balls and Ed Milliband.

DadDadDad · 08/02/2018 18:22

The real challenge is can you connect Flanders & Swann to The Archers (using people connections - bonus points if you go via Kevin Bacon Smile).

I do love the "no complaining" idea of Lynda's for Lent on TA it would be wonderful for us on this thread too wouldn't it eh eh???? It would kill the thread!

DadDadDad · 08/02/2018 18:37

I can connect Michael Flanders to David Troughton via two other people.

DoctorTwo · 08/02/2018 18:47

The Archers eh? Well, the French feared the English archers that much they cut their index and middle fingers of the right hand off, leading to the famous two fingered salute. Wouldn't work with me, I'm left handed. :o

TheAntiBoop · 08/02/2018 19:05

Alice is totally unprofessional. And to get her husband to call in sick? She really is pathetic

cheminotte · 08/02/2018 19:19

Love mud marvellous mud and sing it to the dc (not GDC) on country walks. We had an LP of it growing up.
I also had a magazine called Okapi as a teen.

SusanWalker · 08/02/2018 19:39

Alice has got really drunk and shagged the annoying bloke from work. Now she's cooking shepherds pie with a healthy side of guilt.

TheAntiBoop · 08/02/2018 19:50

Please don't let her be pregnant....

RubyLennoxExists · 08/02/2018 20:09

Easy [grin}- Flanders - DD - dated Ed someone - Ed is name of a character in TA - Ed is a farmer, farmers farm pigs - (Kevin) Bacon

ADarkandStormyKnight · 08/02/2018 21:21

Alice has got really drunk and shagged the annoying bloke from work

Or blacked out and can't remember. I bet she woke up in his house though.

UnimaginativeNameChange1 · 08/02/2018 21:35

Wouldn't be the first time, really? Didn't she do something similar a few years back in Ambridge Extra?

SingaSong12 · 08/02/2018 22:17

Just catching up on TA by reading here.
On F&S - I love them all. As far one for modern times the Gas man cometh still has some truth aand I think Bedstead Men might fit in with environmental messages about pollution and littering.
