TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

Somehow or other the dictaphone was left running while Nigel and Elizabeth had a steamy encounter which was almost certainly the moment when the twins were conceived. We had to listen while Susan played it back.

Arghh. I had wiped that from memory. Thanks for bringing it back.[vom]

If Adam fathers a child for them won't that make a more interesting twist for the future inheritance of Home farm - another spanner in the works as it were. Is this perhaps what the SWs have in mind?

CraicMammy · 05/12/2017 10:06

I hope Freddy and Lily find and play that tape one day, preferably whilst Freddy’s off his tits on mushrooms... that would make for good listening!!
🍄 😲😱🤢

I'm a bit surprised that Ian subscribes to all that nonsense about male identity being about your ability to father a child and nothing else, but I guess conditioning goes deep.

On another topic, I felt sorry for the poor turkeys spending their last night listening to "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" on a loop.

I thought the same Lillian.

TeenTimesTwo · 05/12/2017 18:58

If Adam fathers the child not Ian, it would make Ian slightly more 'expendable' from the SW point of view I would have thought.

Perhaps they'll go back to adoption. Ian can't be genetically related to a baby which was the reason for switching back to surrogacy. So adoption could be back on the cards?

JessieMcJessie · 05/12/2017 19:09

Lilian if Ian had fathered the child then the arrangement would almost certainly have been for Adam to be named as second parent on the birth certificate and (if necessary, I am hazy on the legal ins and outs) to adopt the baby immediately, making it as much his child as Phoebe is Kate’s or Ruari is Brian’s. It is a common misconception that in gay couples (male or female) the one who is not biologically related has to be any less of a parent to the child (legally, and for inheritance purposes) than the biological parent. Of course a couple could CHOOSE to set things up that way but that is definitely not what Adam and Ian were planning.

So the HF inheritance issue would arise even if Ian were the biological father.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/12/2017 20:13

Jessie that is not correct. Whichever of Adam or Ian impregnated their surrogate can , along with her with her agreement be named on the birth certificate.

www.gov.uk/register-birth/who-can-register-a-birth

Same-sex male couples
Male couples must get a parental order from the court before they can be registered as parents.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/12/2017 20:16

No it would not unless Adam took positive steps by obtaining a parental order or adoption.

whiteroseredrose · 05/12/2017 20:40

I thought Ian's friend Mags got pregnant with Ian's baby.

hiyasminitsme · 05/12/2017 20:45

I thought Ian's friend Mags got pregnant with Ian's baby.

didn't she change her mind before it got to that point? and I think it is Mads (pedant alert)

whiteroseredrose · 05/12/2017 21:04

Ah. Ok. If she HAD been pregnant Ian couldn't have been the father.

AuldHeathen · 05/12/2017 21:14

whiterose, l thought lan could have been on the birth certificate if both parents wanted it to be. Though that might be bollocks. But, as others have said, Mags changed her mind when she met a new (male) partner and let lan down.

AuldHeathen · 05/12/2017 21:17

Obviously that would only be if back then he‘d the necessary good quality sperm.

AuldHeathen · 05/12/2017 21:25

Ceto, l thought going back to “little hurt boy“ mode in his distress was actually quite realistic. He’s a gay man who grew up gay in a very oppressive time and place. Even now l don’t imagine it’s easy to grow up gay in NI. I think many of us bring a certain amount of baggage from our youth, and it often does reappear at difficult times.

Was there an intended fnaar fnaar moment in tonight's episode when Jenny explained Ian's absence from dinner the night of his tests because "he had a lot on his hands"? Or was it just me? Blush

JessieMcJessie · 05/12/2017 22:32

Lassif you read what I wrote I was clear that my comment about the HF inheritance issue arising regardless of which one of them was the biological father was based on the premise that Adam would indeed be intending to adopt or do whatever was necessary to grant him full parental responsibility over the baby. I admit I was wrong about the birth certificate because I stupidly got mixed up with the position of my female gay friends where of course one of them is already on the cert as birth mother, and her partner appeared as Parent 2. I am somewhat offended by your tone though- this is a supposedly friendly comment board about a soap opera not a legal dispute where we are acting on opposite sides Hmm.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/12/2017 22:43

I apologise if you think the tone was wrong but you were very confidently posting very inaccurate statements.

JessieMcJessie · 05/12/2017 23:17

Oh for goodness sake Lass, do lighten up. No lives were put a risk by my (already accepted) mistake about the birth certificate and the other bit of what I said was not inaccurate.

Nah, it was me too. I listen to TA when I'm getting ready to go work in the Australian a.m. and thought I'd misheard it. Made me arf.

extinctspecies · 06/12/2017 07:08

I also got the fnaar fnaar moment!

Greebz · 06/12/2017 22:41

I think Harry was way before I started listening but thank you for answering my question about bi characters/ lack thereof!

StVincent · 07/12/2017 01:13

I thought there was some dodginess about Lizzie having a baby (or two) because of her heart trouble. But maybe that only came out during the pregnancy? Speaking of which, I was pleased to hear her heart mentioned the other day when Freddie and Nolly were up to some foolishness.

I was wondering, is Alice an alcoholic? Or just a bit of a big drinking pain a la Auntie Lilian?
