TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

She‘s Holly or Poppy. The one she isn’t is actually their dog‘s name. I like names that suit humans as well as animals. Actually l don’t care, but still can’t remember which is which.

Thank you AuldH - I was having such a miserable day!

(You're hired D3. Just don't expect to be paid in anything other than pencil shavings and recycled Christmas ribbon ...)

DadDadDad · 04/12/2017 16:14

Gruach - as long as I have use of the company stapler every other Tuesday, you've got yourself a deal. Do I bring my own uniform or will you provide? I have absolutely no idea what we are talking about

Smile Happy to serve, all. l see ‚at his‘ has been changed to antihistamine. Oh well, this modern technology can be hard with middle aged eyes. Hope your day is okay-ish, Gruach.

MrsArthurShappey · 04/12/2017 16:29

Or any bi characters?

Remember Harry? Did he help with the pigs? He lived with Jazzer and they were like chalk and cheese, but not in a good way like Jim and Jazzer. Anyway, Fallon fell madly in lust love with him and there was some contrived road trip oop north with Harry, Fallon, Kirsty (?) and Jazzer in a camper van or something (I'm starting to think I made this up). They ended up at some old flame of Harry's, which Shock was a man. Turns out he was bi. Fallon, spurned, got pissed and shagged Jazzer. Jazzer was heartbroken when it came to naught. Harry disappeared into the sunset with his man, never to be heard of again. Literally never, not one mention.

TheAntiBoop · 04/12/2017 17:25

That was in the extra shitty Amex days wasn't it?

MrsArthurShappey · 04/12/2017 17:41

[shudder] yes I think you’re right!

Ghostontoast · 04/12/2017 18:12

William was unplanned as was Emma, Johnnie, Phoebe and Adam and probably Nolitando. Not sure about Alice.

AuldHeathen · 04/12/2017 18:28

Alice was planned. She was to the glue for the parental relationship after Brine had strayed - with Caroline that time, l think. I imagine Frilly was planned, but don’t recall a conversation between Nigel and Elizabeth.

Wasn’t Kenton on that road trip too? Or was there another trip to the northern provinces around the same time? In the days of Cameron Fraser l recall a family friend moaning that trips to Scotland on TA were talked about as if it was abtrip to Timbuktu. Like it was a big, scary adventure. And they always referred to it, slightly breathlessly, as Scotland, rarely a specific destination like Perthshire or Edinburgh or wherever. Mind you, back then it felt like they only ever went up for the hunting or shooting or both.

MrsLandingham · 04/12/2017 19:00

AuldHeathen, I did wonder about the antihistamine and Ben. Thought that I'd erased it from my memory Grin

Gruach · 04/12/2017 19:10

Oh noooooooo ....

AuldHeathen · 04/12/2017 19:27

Oh, MrsL, l never thought of that. Though it seems it’s only Lynda that needs antihistamines in Ambridge - am sure that’s unrealistic too. I like your user name, btw. One of my favourite characters in TWW. I’ve been rewatching the series since November 2016 (can’t imagine what happened then)

Somebody on here guessed that twist in the lan & Adam saga. Well done, whoever you were. So very hot kitchens and tight underpants have consequences.... Smile

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/12/2017 19:58

Ben of the cereal cupboard wasn’t though - we were present antihistamine conception

Oh goodness I thought you were referring to some unwanted side effect of using antihistamines and the pill.

MikeUniformMike · 04/12/2017 20:12

I thought Ben was out on his bike. He's been gone a while.

Holly is the dog and Poppy is a girl.

Pip actress is awful. I liked the ghastly old Pip. I also liked the old Josh and the old Tom.

Cromwell1536 · 04/12/2017 20:38

Ooh, haven't listened yet. So is Ian's sperm count and motility low? Does this mean Adam will have to have one off the wrist if their dreams of conception are to, ahem, come to fruition? Can't imagine he could muster the energy, actually.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/12/2017 21:13

Yes. And that's the end of it ( no idea why Adam can't be the father)

JessieMcJessie · 04/12/2017 21:52

Abbie Tucker was planned, Roy and Hayley had fertility problems and were advised by Dr Robert Winston in disguise.

I am pretty sure that they won’t go down the “Adam and Ian adopt Pip’s baby” route, it’s far too far-fetched.

Cromwell1536 · 04/12/2017 21:58

I've never really understood the 'you have the baby and I'll adopt it". Can you do that? Wouldn't social services have to assess and determine the adoptive parent/s were appropriate? Pip couldn't just fast-track her baby straight into Adam and Ian's family, could she?

MrsArthurShappey · 04/12/2017 22:29

Nice to see some new posters! I spotted ‘EmmaGrundyforPM’ on another thread the other day but they haven’t appeared here yet!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 04/12/2017 22:42

No she couldn't. In the past they could have had a long term private fostering arrangement which would not have needed approval but it is now regulated since Victoria Klimbie's death. Adam and Pip would not be close enough relatives for the local authority not to be involved.

Imbroglio · 04/12/2017 23:45

Poor Ian.

KingscoteStaff · 05/12/2017 06:08

All the Button girls were meticulously planned.

Fink · 05/12/2017 08:02

In other matters, the bunting brought a few other unfinished sl to my mind. Did we ever find out that Alf had taken the rap for what was really George's theft or his mysterious wealth gone unexplained? I might have missed it.

Fink · 05/12/2017 08:03

*has his mysterious wealth ...

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 05/12/2017 08:21

Alf is a loose end, as far as I recall.

He was probably using condoms that went out of date in the last decade and had been stored in a box of pins Grin Grin Grin

Frilly definitely planned. It took a while for E to get pregnant. IIRC, there was a hilarious Hmm storyline about Nigel's mother Julia writing a bodice-ripper novel and dictating it for Susan to type Somehow or other the dictaphone was left running while Nigel and Elizabeth had a steamy encounter which was almost certainly the moment when the twins were conceived. We had to listen while Susan played it back. Envy

Pip was planned, and I think so were John and Helen, James Bellamy, Debbie, Kate and Alice, Roy and Brenda, Ed Grundy, Chris Carter. As I recall, during all the uproar following Elizabeth's abortion and Shula's breastbeating about Elizabeth's selfishness in not going through with the pregnancy so that Shula and Mark could adopt the baby Hmm, Ruth suddenly lobbed in the news that she was pregnant. It was rather well done because they had been married for a while but hadn't said they were planning to start a family, so it was a surprise, but a perfectly natural plot development. We could do with more of those. Sad Angry

Kenton, Shula, David and Elizabeth were conceived so long ago that the idea of a married couple with fewer than 4 children not welcoming another pregnancy was probably not a plausible soap line.

glamorousgrandmother · 05/12/2017 08:31

I've never really understood the 'you have the baby and I'll adopt it". Can you do that? Wouldn't social services have to assess and determine the adoptive parent/s were appropriate? I think that's the point of one of them providing the sperm - so it's theirs. Agree, it's unlikely they could just adopt Pip's baby although it used to be quite common practice informally.
