TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

Checking in

Is it just me that feels Lizzie is encouraging Pip to have an abortion, validating the choice she made? It would be nice to hear her say that Pip would have a lot of support if she did keep the baby, it being completely her choice etc.

Bekabeech · 07/12/2017 06:18

I don't think Elizabeth has encouraged Pip, just been a sounding board and checking up on her as the only one who knows. I thought she handled it incredibly well, not giving advice but just reminding Pip of things like Does she want to tell Toby.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2017 06:35

"Is it just me that feels Lizzie is encouraging Pip to have an abortion, validating the choice she made? It would be nice to hear her say that Pip would have a lot of support if she did keep the baby, it being completely her choice etc."

Just you.

Puremince · 07/12/2017 08:51

Pip has turned to Lizzie because she knows that Lizzie has had an abortion, which obviously affects the dynamic, but I don't think that Lizzie is encouraging her.

StVincent · 07/12/2017 08:56

I think Lizzie is actually doing very good Samaritans style listening, not giving guidance or opinion either way. So far at least. Talking about family support etc would be putting pressure on. (Especially as although Pip has loads of family they are nearly all full time long hours workers or children or over 90!)

EBearhug · 07/12/2017 10:34

I think Lizzie recognises that sometimes, speaking to close family will add complications to what is already a very difficult decision, whichever way it goes.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2017 10:54

If Pip was my niece I would be encouraging her a lot more than Lizzie is........

Yes I agree.

This:
t would be nice to hear her say that Pip would have a lot of support if she did keep the baby, it being completely her choice etc.

Would be pushing her to keep the baby as well as being a rosy painted assumption which may not be true.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 07/12/2017 12:22

I thought there was some dodginess about Lizzie having a baby (or two) because of her heart trouble. But maybe that only came out during the pregnancy?

There was a lot of concern about her during her pregnancy, but she's had the heart problem since birth, I believe. She had major surgery when very young.

Ceto · 07/12/2017 13:24

BOOP point for the current panto storyline. It feels like traditional Archers, and it's a nice touch having Lynda in the cast being more of a menace than the people she complained about in the past when she was directing.

MikeUniformMike · 07/12/2017 13:38

If Pip was my niece I'd be encouraging her to terminate the pregnancy without further ado and to find herself a job in Australia.

EmilyDickinson · 07/12/2017 14:20

I wonder what Ed is going to think when he hears that Adam has offered Johnny a permanent job on what sounds like it might be a decent salary.

BertrandRussell · 07/12/2017 14:24

"I wonder what Ed is going to think when he hears that Adam has offered Johnny a permanent job on what sounds like it might be a decent salary."

I thought that. They really have screwed Ed over, haven't they?

Gruach · 07/12/2017 14:25

I wondered if the Ed factor was the reason Johnny declined to give an immediate answer. I would be overwhelmingly impressed if the SWs were to let Johnny do the right thing.

Cromwell1536 · 07/12/2017 18:19

Just listened to yesterday's episode. Is Lillian planning to hightail it after Matt and try to get Christine's money back? I thought some signalling of another bizarre plot development was going on at the close.

HatingTheBigShow · 07/12/2017 18:37

Don't get me wrong, I think an abortion is a sensible choice in Pip's position - not in a relationship with the father, just starting out in her career - and Elizabeth has been good in saying that, I'm paraphrasing, there's no shame or anything wrong in having one. It's just that so far she hasn't suggested that she consider both options carefully. Not that it matters, there's no way on Earth the future heir to Brookfield is going to be terminated. I'm going to channel MysticBore and say Pip will discover her dusty baby doll in the attic anytime now.

HatingTheBigShow · 07/12/2017 18:40

And yes, going straight to Jonny was shitty of Adam. He wanted cheap labour to cover illness so got an apprentice temporarily, fair enough, but this proper job should go to Ed, with Jonny doing some junior shifts.

Gruach · 07/12/2017 19:07

Oh goody - looks like they're thinking with us.

Vango · 07/12/2017 19:10

Oh for the love of God. I CANNOT beat her any more.

Vango · 07/12/2017 19:15

*bear!

Mootsie · 07/12/2017 19:28

Why doesn't Emma shop in Aldi or Lidl? Grin

Cromwell1536 · 07/12/2017 19:30

Only caught the bit tonight where Brine (yes, that's BRINE!) shared manly consolations with Ian for his sterility. No way on EARTH would Brine broach such a subject with Ian! what is going on with the script writers?

What's happened Vango? who can't you bear?

Gruach · 07/12/2017 19:31

Fuel? Bus fares?

C8H10N4O2 · 07/12/2017 19:33

I would be overwhelmingly impressed if the SWs were to let Johnny do the right thing

Ed already has more hours contracting than he can manage plus the sheep. Why would Adam assume he wanted a permanent job which potentially brings in less, than the thriving hours of contracting and sheep business which Ed tells people he has.
Why should Johnny miss an opportunity he has earned by showing initiative and hard work, to hand it over to someone else who apparently has more, better paid, work? Its the only farm in the area which seems to have capacity for an full timer atm so Johnny isn't likely to get another local opportunity.

Emma was vile to Johnny and quite unnecessarily so. He was trying to be friendly to Keira and didn't deserve her 'Susan' side - he has never looked down on them or been negative in any way. He wasn't unqualified cheap labour either - he has done an apprenticeship alongside his practical experience which Ed, despite more practical experience, never has. They were both horrible to him when the original opportunity came up despite Ed having received a fair few unearned opportunities of his own.
When Adam gave Johnny the part time work Ed wasn't exactly clear in his message - he had a carp at not being offered the work (which was reasonable) whilst also saying he had more work than he knew what to do with.
