TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

I know, Lillian, I was thinking more of Alice and Pip! Aren't they blood relations? Both from the Archer line ultimately...

LucretiaBourgeois · 03/01/2018 10:25

Alice's mother (Jennifer) and Pip's father are first cousins. So they are first cousins once removed.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/01/2018 10:26

Jennifer and David are first cousins so Alice and Pip are cousins a couple of times removed.

EBearhug · 03/01/2018 11:16

Jennifer and David are first cousins

So Alice and Pip are second cousins. They are first cousins once removed to each other's parents.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2018 11:19

Did anyone hear Dead Ringers? There was a very funny sketch on TA after the button has been pressed. There is a force shield built around the studios in case just ONE Archers fan exists to write in to complain about anything Grin Heather Bells's 'Clarrie' accent drops to MC too.

MikeUniformMike · 03/01/2018 11:22

As EBearhug said, Alice and Pip are 2nd cousins.
Ed's wife is Alice's SIL.
I also suspect that Alice was the hit and run driver.

Halsall · 03/01/2018 11:45

Exactly - thanks to all the genealogists Grin

I just would have thought that the long-standing family relationship might have merited a bit a lot more discretion and loyalty from Alice than immediately revealing Pip's private business to Ed, even if he is Alice's BIL.

CeciledeVolanges · 03/01/2018 12:20

My apologies if I wasn't censorious enough about Alice - I think it goes without saying that spiking anyone's anything with anything is wrong. But that doesn't change the fact that I think Pip's reaction was a little OTT. The Archers is a story but there are people out there who might accidentally or forgetfully drink once or twice in their pregnancy and I don't think it's an utter, total disaster. Alice still behaved extremely badly and I hope she's learned her lesson.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2018 12:38

That SL showed how stupid and irresponsible Alice was to get so pissed that she spiked Pip's drink.. Shame they didn't carry it through by giving her a bad enough hangover to stop her from going with Chris who was swimming in the Am the next day.

Maybe her faux pas to Ed about the pregnancy was because she was still drunk?

R4 · 03/01/2018 12:57

Heeellllooooooo and belated Happy New Year. I've been without internet for a week and it's been torture.Sad
Going back to the Pip debate, part of the reason that I don't like her is because she has no hinterland. I can't think of any (interesting or otherwise) facts about her apart from (a) she looks after cows and (b) she has poor taste in men. She is not a fully fleshed character (compare and contrast to, for example, La Snell who has multitude interests and accomplishments).

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2018 13:05

Well R4 she is relatively young! Lynda's double her age! Pip's been to college and she's a farmer, it's what TA is about isn't it, agriculture?

I liked her relationship with Frilly , she wished she had a sister.

R4 · 03/01/2018 13:12

Well R4 she is relatively young! Lynda's double her age!

OK, compare her to Johnny. She's five years older than him but he has more personality than her.
Tell me something else interesting about Pip because I can't think of anything except perhaps her inability to make decisions (about boyfriends, jobs, milking parlours ...)

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2018 13:17

Shall we just agree to differ? I don't mind her (i can't get het up about her). There are others upthread who agree I noticed !.

BashStreetKid · 03/01/2018 13:50

I suspect they'd be dropping more hints if Alice were the hit and run driver. Someone would have noticed the damage on the car, or she'd be sounding upset or evasive or something.

ppeatfruit · 03/01/2018 14:34

I loved Freddie, already a chip off the old block, conning the conners and going to remember his Dad by sitting in a field drinking Tumble Tussock!

Also Noli removing Lynda\Carabosse's evil spirits by giving her a S.A. tribal detox!

BashStreetKid · 03/01/2018 14:35

I wonder if Kate is now deciding she needs Noluthando to join the business?

TheAntiBoop · 03/01/2018 15:28

Didn't Brian take his car to the garage? Could Alice have been driving it?

I don't think pip was ott about the spiking - but given she was trying to hide something she was foolish not to just walk away.

I always find it odd that people have such an issue with others not drinking alcohol in this country.

I didn't like the recasting of pip and Tom. I'm used to new Tom now but new pip needs a new pip.

BashStreetKid · 03/01/2018 15:31

*Didn't Brian take his car to the garage? Could Alice have been driving it?

I think Brian might have noticed that he'd been billed for dealing with a Matt-shaped dent. Plus surely the police would have checked with garages whether anyone had brought a car in for suspicious repairs?

LillianGish · 03/01/2018 15:46

I can't think of any (interesting or otherwise) facts about her apart from (a) she looks after cows and (b) she has poor taste in men. She is not a fully fleshed character This is so true - I just don’t believe in Pip. Like a pp when I hear Pip I don’t picture Ambridge I picture a recording studio. Funnily enough she was almost more interesting when she was a child - didn’t she used to play the piano and occasionally the organ church (not that that was supremely interesting, but there was more to her than just farmer).

meredintofpandiculation · 03/01/2018 15:50

Freddie spending £50 to buy the remaining Tumble Tussock which he's planning (with Johnnie) to drink all in one go and therefore won't appreciate. OK, I know it gives the Grundies £50, but for all the benefit that Freddie gets from it, he might as well pour it down the drain - what a waste of a fine cider! (If indeed it is a fine cider).

TheAntiBoop · 03/01/2018 16:09

Maybe Brian knows more than he's saying and disguised the Matt shaped debt by thrashing it with a branch basil fawlty style

Gruach · 03/01/2018 16:48

Nah meredintofpandiculation - cider should always be drunk all in one go, in a field, with a couple of mates. Xmas Grin

Actually, thinking about it, I have to give my first BOOP of the year to the SWs for bringing the three (other) houses of Archer together via their teen representatives. Freddie, Noli and Johnnie together are exactly what I want for the future of TA. (If only Brookfield could disappear into the sinkhole all would be well for decades to come.)

EBearhug · 03/01/2018 17:09

You never know - Ben may yet come into his own. :-)
