TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

Just to keep labouring the alcohol point, I'm sure a lot of geniuses were born and a large proportion of the population was totally functional and fine at a point where water was not safe to drink and people drank a lot of small beer. Four glasses of champagne once is not much in comparison.

When I was pregnant in 1979 it was barely an issue, I had the odd drink - not much because I felt so sick but was encouraged to drink Guinness or Mackesons 'for the iron'. My daughter is fine.

meredintofpandiculation · 02/01/2018 17:21

According to wiki, small beer has about 0.75% alcohol. So 4 glasses of champagne at 10%, assuming they were small glasses of 150ml, would be equivalent to about 8 litres of small beer.

Incidentally, the original gripe water was 3.6% alcohol

I like to loathe kate.
loved the 'honesty present' nolutando gave her.
as for pip, I don't hate her.

there are a lot of characters quiet atm, especially the older ones.

It's taken me ages to catch up from Christmas, so forgive me for popping up with something from over a week ago, but I felt really sad for Oliver at Christmas. Whilst it was nice he wasn't alone at Christmas and he had a nice time, he really wanted to be on his own and have a quiet one and think of Caroline. Instead his wishes, which he stated clearly several times, were completely ignored and he was forced to have a Christmas he didn't want.

I know it would have be sad, but he wanted to be alone on Christmas Day and I wish that The Archers could have taken the less obvious route and let him have had the Christmas he wanted.

Not everyone wants a jolly family Christmas and they shouldn't be forced to have one because other people think it's for the best.

Abra1d · 02/01/2018 19:41

Erm, OK.

I did also have a small glass of wine once a week. From the second trimester onwards.

Not sure if this qualifies as ‘a lot’ or not.

The point is that Pip didn’t drink more than I did on one single occasion, which is what we were talking about, weren’t we?

MrsGrindah · 02/01/2018 19:52

I don’t like Noli. She’s very self centred and rude and I hope she doesn’t stay a permanent character . Her character is encouraging the SWs to continue with some very lazy writing..Jenny now flapping over her now tha Phoebe has gone, another excuse for Kate to show off how hip she is etc. If they bring in new characters they should bring in fresh storylines too.
Re Pips love life. I don’t think she is promiscuous but I do marvel over how every bloke she meets fancies her even if they don’t end up in a relationship with her.Dont know how she manages it when she’s knee deep in cow poo all the time!

IJoinedJustToPostThis · 02/01/2018 20:15

Kate isn't showing off how hip she is though: Kate is an embarrassment. There is a huge generation gap between the 90s ravers and today's millennials, and the friction between Kate and Noli highlights that. I can't disagree that Noli is self-centred and rude, bit she is 16 years old, so there's time for her yet, and she's got Kate for a mum, so things could be a lot worse.

MrsGrindah · 02/01/2018 20:43

Yes sorry I meant Kate showing off how hip she thinks she is!

Misericord · 02/01/2018 22:32

BurntheBlackSuit I couldn’t agree more. That made me so sad and cross that they forced a one size fits all Christmas on him.

And I HATE Joe Grundy.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 03/01/2018 00:42

I'm really looking forward to wailing and gnashing of teeth when the Dopeys find out Pip is upduffed. Especially if the gossip reaches them before she tells them.

BashStreetKid · 03/01/2018 01:30

I wonder when the Dopeys are going to notice that there's a bit of a pattern going on where Pip doesn't get round to telling them things she finds it inconvenient for them to know. It would be great if it reduces the glow from her halo for them.

RegalPossum · 03/01/2018 03:36

Pip's voice is grating at the best of times, but can you imagine what she'll sound like in labour? Shock I think we'll ALL be needing the gas & air during that episode.

As for the hit & run driver, I would put money on it being Alice. I can't quite remember what she was doing during the hunt ball, but the drinking problem would definately tie in.

Gruach · 03/01/2018 07:36

Oh look - here's the Archers' Quiz of the year. Star

Had forgotten its existence - along with some of the answers. (14/17, but I have been unusually distracted this year.)

EBearhug · 03/01/2018 08:01

16/17 (and I dithered over the one I got wrong, but went for the other of my two possible answers on that.)

Is there some sort of therapy available for me?

Bekabeech · 03/01/2018 08:09

In the past all kind of things we're recommended during pregnancy or not forbidden, which is very different from the advice now. That doesn't mean because most babies were born okay that we should ignore the advice.
No one knew about the problem with excess vitamin A or a lack of folic acid - most babies were still born without Spina Bifida, but less are now because of government advice. Not drinking in Pregnancy has been advised since the 80s at least, but in the UK the advice is gentle in advising not to drink. Partly because young women will drink - and often may well have drunk in the early few weeks.

The big issue here is that anyone who gives alcohol to someone who said NO has severe boundary issues, and probably a very dangerous relationship with alcohol.
I can't understand some reactions here - what would the reaction have been if Pip was not pregnant but her drink had been spiked by some male character?

I got 16 out of 17 on the quiz!

Puremince · 03/01/2018 08:11

16/17

Spiking anyone's drink is wrong. Trying to persuade someone to drink alcohol when they don't want to is wrong and nobody should have to give a reason for not drinking. I would like to have seen more of a point made of this rather than that Pip might have had a sip of vodka which, although she was right to avoid drinking, on its own wouldn't do any damage.

TheAntiBoop · 03/01/2018 08:36

Spiking someone's drink is awful and for me it would be unforgivable when the person doesn't even get that it's wrong

I don't like pip because she is poorly written and badly acted. As I've said numerous times she brings me into the recording studio with her when I should feel like in in ambridge

I was sure that horse was called Balthazar’s Treasure.......

Gruach · 03/01/2018 08:45

Did you check the answers Bert? One of them was the horse he said he was buying, the other was the one he actually bought. Or summat ... Even having read it I can't remember which is which.

Puremince · 03/01/2018 08:56

Balthazar's Treasure was the expensive horse which he didn't buy, despite the fact that it was the better option.

I have a bit of a soft spot for Pip, because she was born just before DC1, and I took a keen interest in her birth and early development. Ruth and David have done her no favours by bigging up everything she does, and by the way that they talk to her about Josh.

Halsall · 03/01/2018 09:41

I still can't get over Alice blabbing Pip's 'secret' to Ed with no more than a token 'oops!' (And him blabbing it to Nic, and so on and so forth, inevitably).

Alice & Pip are related somehow, aren't they? although I can't be bothered to work out their exact positions on the family tree; cousins of some degree? so it's all the more inexcusable that she can't keep her big mouth shut before running off to tell the nearest random. IRL people might well confide in their own spouses, safe in the knowledge that it wouldn't go any further, but Alice has become such a lairy ladette recently that I suppose they had to put her in the pub yet again rather than just having a quiet word with Chris.

Mind you, I must admit I'm looking forward to the explosion of Dopey rage when the gossip gets to them....

LillianGish · 03/01/2018 09:45

Everyone's related! Ed is Alice's BIL.
