TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

Oh, my glass eye had a wee tear there.

Gruach · 12/12/2017 19:18

First site - disappointingly four figure-ish. Second, Christies, shockingly and delightfully five figures. Hope Lily's is one of the latter.

AuldHeathen · 12/12/2017 19:18

By that l mean Frilly, not Pip n Jill.

quickname · 12/12/2017 19:36

How long until Shula and Alan's affair begins?
That kiss goodbye yesterday and calling her love twice was heavy with portent ..

AuldHeathen · 12/12/2017 19:49

That wasn‘t Shula? Wasn‘t it Usha? Knowing their history l‘d bloody hope it was Usha.

Gruach · 12/12/2017 19:51

quick Never. Never. Never. Not happening. Ever. Xmas Angry

On the other hand - I felt a definite quiver of 'best laid plans' regarding Freddie's ring ...

TeenTimesTwo · 12/12/2017 19:54

Anyone care to place a bet on Freddie selling the ring within 6 months to go backpacking around Asia or South America?

2rebecca · 12/12/2017 20:10

Why you don't live with your parents as an adult, your gran will happily give you no privacy when you are in your bedroom. If Pip ends up having to tell them all rather the normal scenario of a woman in her 20s not telling parents, gran/great gran and uncle tom cobbly and all but being able to keep her mouth shut it will be very silly. WTF is she feeling guilty? A seriously overenmeshed family. Debbie did the right thing. Everyone in TA is incapable of keeping anything private. It's not "lying" or "a secret" ffs, it's just your personal business that is nothing to do with your nosy relatives.

echt · 12/12/2017 20:15

I too have my suspicions about the fate of the emerald ring.

As for Pip's pregnancy, has there ever been TA one where a woman decides, and privately, about an abortion, gets on with it and then carries on with her daily life without repining?

BertrandRussell · 12/12/2017 20:42

I loathe Freddy, but that was a seriously shit present (cf thread passim) and I will be completely on his side when he sells it.

2rebecca · 12/12/2017 21:02

I think that once you give someone a present you have to accept it is theirs. If Elizabeth wanted it to be a family heirloom then it shouldn't have been a present but given along with a lawyers note explaining that he was just the guardian and it couldn't be sold.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 12/12/2017 21:20

Elizabeth had a guilt free abortion. It is however implausible Pip would have known about it.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/12/2017 22:43

Did Elizabeth tell Pip? I was trying to remember how Pip knew. It wasn't a big secret but at the same time its from before Pip was born and not likely to be table chatter at Brookfield. Especially with Jill in residence.

I did wonder if Pip would have been more likely to tell Ruth if Jill wasn't around all the time. I don't imagine she would ever tell David but Ruth was the only one who tried to build bridges between Toby and the blood Archers.

Flopjustwantscoffee · 12/12/2017 23:17

Long time lurker here. Isn't there a bit of circularity in that Elizabeth's aborted baby was also half fairbrother and now X years on pip is in the same position with the son? Or am I misremembering...

campion · 12/12/2017 23:49

Flopjust
It was Cameron Fraser who left Elizabeth in the lurch, dumping her at a motorway service station en route to a (his) new life. She then had the abortion.

Robin Fairbrother was earlier but still a ratbag in that he was married.

I agree that it's rather contrived that Pip even knows about the abortion and that Elizabeth just happened to be there when the secret came out.
Elizabeth is not going to be popular when D and R find out!

The presents would work much better the other way round. Both are valuable ; Lily strikes me as quite a girly girl and I don't recall her expressing any great love of art; most girls and women do like jewellery and most girls and women would like to get their great grandmother's (?) diamond and emerald ring.

2rebecca · 13/12/2017 00:11

Agree giving a boy a ring seems bizarre and very patriarchial, like Freddie's future wife has more status than Lily.

2rebecca · 13/12/2017 00:13

Surely when D&R find out they'll be relieved she had the abortion and glad she had someone to talk to about it. Jill's the one who insists on knowing everything and wants everything to be about her and her views.

Gruach · 13/12/2017 00:26

In family terms, to Nigel, Freddie's wife would have more status than Lily. She'd be the mother of Pargetters of Lower Loxley.

(It'll never happen.)

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 13/12/2017 01:18

I don't think so by a long way.

Surely any mother is going to be sad her daughter didn't talk to her? Much as I loathe Ruth, Ruth is dim and irritating but she is not a bad parent.

C8H10N4O2 · 13/12/2017 07:17

Yes I agree, however the assumption is that as a mere girl, Lily will not continue the Pargeter line and therefore Family Jewellery goes to the son's wife rather than the daughter. Just like the whole estate goes to the least competent sibling along with the testicles.

C8H10N4O2 · 13/12/2017 07:19

Yes I agree, especially as Ruth would mostly likely be supportive - not as objectively as Elizabeth has been but I don't see her having hysterics about That Fairbrother. David and Jill are another matter.

Obviously they will find out and more Dopey Drahma will follow.

R4 · 13/12/2017 07:46

That's not how I remember it! Ruth was the driver to uproot the family to upnorth, in the middle of Josh's exams. She buzzed off to NZ for months (inc Xmas) and wouldn't say when she would be back. She favours Pip over Josh, and has Ben locked in the cereal cupboard. Heck, she favours her cows over any of her DC (I suspect that she doesn't really love Pip for her own sake, only for what Pip can do for the cowsGrin).
She is a bad parent.

Eastpoint · 13/12/2017 07:50

I have female American friends who have inherited family jewellery in order that it stays in the family.

Why would you keep a painting in a safe deposit box?

TheAntiBoop · 13/12/2017 08:12

Ruth is a dreadful parent!!!

I can think of loads of examples of bad parenting but struggling to think of examples of good parenting
