TA (The Archers) annoys me intensely but I still have to listen
I think there is a possibility that we obsess about TA in a way that most listeners don't

If this is you (genuine quotes from earlier threads), or you're new and want to ask anything about The Archers, then this is the right place.

PseudoBadger started it, but we're going to finish it (er, will TA ever finish?)

The panto is meant to be Sleeping Beauty, but are you expecting farce (Mother Goose Pip) or tragedy (Puss Cat in Wedding Dress Boots )?

This should see us through to Christmas. Xmas Smile Archers

At the end of the last thread we were remembering recent successful marriages in Ambridge. How long ago was Ed & Emma?

I just want PIp to go and have the abortion, not tell anyone, feel a little bit regretful possibly for what might have been and get in with her life-maybe with a PSA about contraception in passing.

In our dreams. When are you bringing in the new editor?

MikeUniformMike · 13/12/2017 11:16

Ruth is not a good mother. Poor Ben has been out on his bike since July and nobody's noticed he's not come back.
David's not a good father either.
They both think more of Pip than of their other children.

Eastpoint I imagine the cost of insuring a Gwen John would be prohibitively expensive to have it hanging on the wall of an ordinary home (if LL can be described as "ordinary") so family owned valuable paintings often end up on loan to museums or locked away in bank vaults.

Gruach · 13/12/2017 11:42

It's of no importance whatsoever - but the thought of even an imaginary, luminously beautiful Gwen John portrait locked up unseen in a bank vault is making me rather restive and guillotine-y.

BertrandRussell · 13/12/2017 11:52

Me too, Gruach......

meredintofpandiculation · 13/12/2017 12:42

Quite impressed at an 18 year old saying "Is that a genuine Gwyn John?" in a tone of wonder. But then I wasn't brought up in a wealthy cultured household.

meredintofpandiculation · 13/12/2017 12:57

... as you can see from the fact I can't even spell her name right ;-)

RockNRollNerd · 13/12/2017 14:01

Pip’s abortion has to become know to Brookfield. So the question is how? I fear a dreadfully dramatic story line where she passss put and is found by one of them and Elizabeth has to tell them or something along those lines. I just can’t see the SWs letting her simply go to the clinic, take the pills and be done with it quietly.

BertrandRussell · 13/12/2017 14:10

"I just can’t see the SWs letting her simply go to the clinic, take the pills and be done with it quietly."

No, me neither. She is a woman. She has had sex She must be punished

Fink · 13/12/2017 14:29

The thing which really irritated me was the ridiculousness of Elizabeth having to tell Pip about her grandmother's views on abortion. They've lived together for years and been in the same village her whole life, are we to suppose all their conversations are on the level of polite small talk and offers of food and they don't actually know each other at all?!

AuldHeathen · 13/12/2017 15:58

I‘m not aware that Jill and Pip have chatted about abortion. It‘s not a subject that will have come up in casual chat. Pip might guess her grandma, but only from her age and church-going, and none of that is clear cut. I can‘t imagine Pip and Ruth discussing it either.

I‘d imagine the clinic wanting Pip to not be alone on Friday night, even over the weekend. It‘s not great her being in the cottage alone without those in Brookfield being aware of her situation. Though plenty of young women IRL will be in that position with flatmates, parents etc. I wonder she‘ll collapse and be found by Toby. Jill dropping by uninvited is something she did when the Dopeys were in the bungalow when they were newly wed! You‘d think she‘d know better by now. Another thing l don‘t get. How will Pip get out of farm work over the weekend if she‘s feeling poorly and nobody knows what is going on? Oh well, we‘ll all find out soon enough.

LillianGish · 13/12/2017 16:15

The thing which really irritated me was the ridiculousness of Elizabeth having to tell Pip about her grandmother's views on abortion. Agreed. Particularly when we are supposed to believe that Pip was au fait with an abortion Elizabeth had long before she was born. Either they talk about things or they don't, but the SWs can't have it both ways.

AuntyElle · 13/12/2017 17:37

So Jill let herself into Rickyard and knocked on Pip’s bedroom door with cake? Confused

extinctspecies · 13/12/2017 17:46

I also agree that the painting would have been hanging on the wall, and the facility would all have known about it.

Bekabeech · 13/12/2017 18:00

I'm wondering if Nigel choosing those items was "on air" as it does sound like something that could have been. And I do remember him complaining about the "entail" which meant he inherited, but I don't remember what if anything they did for future generations?

cheminotte · 13/12/2017 22:22

Really loving the panto shenanigans!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 14/12/2017 00:29

The panto is fab and a Pip free zone too.

Puremince · 14/12/2017 08:06

I'm trying to understand the gift thing. Presumably the family heirloom ring was in Lower Loxley (in a safe?) until Nigel decided it was to be Freddie's 18th, at which point it was moved into the bank vault. And the Gwen John? Was it hanging on a wall in Lower Loxley and then taken down and moved into the vault?

R4 · 14/12/2017 08:36

I liked last night's episode with all its village-coming-togetherness and friendly cooperation.
It would be lovely if Eddie's generosity of spirit was him turning over a new leaf and in return the universe starts to treat the Grundys a bit kinder. The theme was repeated in last night's Detectorists - something to do with the season, methinks.Smile
I also loved how Huge Canoe cleverly 'showed' us the pratfalls and farce of the panto by simply having someone describe how it would be "once they've got the scenery in place". Genius! So much better than the usual fare of one onlooker describing to us another what is going on in front of their noses.

LillianGish · 14/12/2017 09:32

Love the panto - agree with R4 it was brilliant radio the way the SW got the characters to describe what would be happening. Always a joy to hear Jazzer and even better when that happens in a Brookfield-free episode. Funny, I used to love Brookfield before the diktat about TA being more about the Archer family and the shipping off of ‘peripheral’ characters. It’s a bit like panto itself - the peripheral characters are always so much more entertaining than the leading lady. TA is much better when it’s an ensemble piece.

Ceto · 14/12/2017 11:33

They could have had the heirlooms in the bank well before Nigel decided they were going to be given to the twins - probably from the point when insurance costs of doing anything else became prohibitive. You have to wonder what else may be conveniently stored in that vault.

ppeatfruit · 14/12/2017 14:13

R4 did you miss the bit when Ruth was taking\driving Ben to the cinema? It was fairly recently.

Sorry but that really is rubbish about punishment for bad contraception; TA is just being it's normal slightly misogynist reflection of society. (which is changing almost visibly IMO thankfully) And I wouldn't talk to my Gran about abortion. Lizzie is trying to be kind/helpful to Pip.

R4 · 14/12/2017 15:48

did you miss the bit when Ruth was taking\driving Ben to the cinema?

Is that evidence that Ben doesn't live in the cereal cupboard or (the sole piece of evidence that you can find to prove) that Ruth isn't a bad parent? If it's the latter then you are setting the bar fairly low.Grin

TheAntiBoop · 14/12/2017 16:22

Ta is very frustrating. Has excellent scenes and strong characters like yesterday - and then dumps us with the Brookfield archers drivel and the nonsense that is Lillian and Justin's wedding.

I wish they had moved north tbh. They have such fabulous actors but seem to want pip to dominate the airwaves despite being badly acted. She must have something on someone.
