Thanks, R4, for the title (again!).

I'm your temporary host while PseudoBadger is on her sabbatical / prison term / secret mission.

Old hands and complete newbies all welcome.

Spoilers (eg Radio Times descriptions of future programmes) not welcome.

When will Matt reappear? Before / during / after the wedding?

The floor is yours...

If Matt ends up freezing to death in the ditch I don't think we need worry too much. He was so drunk he will have gone unconscious very quickly.

Here in Borsetshire, we had our first frost of the year overnight. For once the scriptwriters weather is correct!

ppeatfruit · 30/10/2017 10:23

It's definitely Justin , did anyone hear the car's engine ? It was a very expensive, powerful one that was deliberately accelerated AWAY. My theory is that J was driving to the Bull to 'have it out ' punch Matt but luck was with him because Matt staggered into the road in front of his car. . He accidentally hit him, got out noticed who it was and drove away.

Ceto · 30/10/2017 10:31

I don't think it could have been Nic, primarily because she doesn't have the wherewithal to conceal the evidence. If her car were to go up in flames now or get stolen, even Harrison might be able to work out that it's a bit too much of a coincidence.

TeenTimesTwo · 30/10/2017 10:32

Do you think they are that careful about things like that on TA?

My DH is forever complaining when they use the wrong helicopter/plane noise on TV/film. Wrong engine, in air not on the ground etc etc.

I was thinking that we need that Scandi-noir from the Esso ad.Grin

ppeatfruit · 30/10/2017 10:56

Well I noticed it and I'm not an expert, but It wasn't a small Datsun type!

Puremince · 30/10/2017 11:35

Justin was already at the Bull, and was last heard heading across the road to look for Matt in the Green. So if that was Justin, then he had either a) spotted Matt and got into the car to run him down or b) he'd given up trying to find Matt and was driving back to the Hunt Ball.

The first isn't plausible because the Green is surrounded by houses, people leaving the Bull etc. No-one would be stupid enough to deliberately run someone down in a built-up area, especially with full beams on. If Matt was knocked down there, someone will have seen / heard something.

But the second suggests that Matt had wandered out of the village, which doesn't fit with him waiting for his cab.

I don't think it was Justin.

I think it was some unknown (Matt's cab?) and this is just a plot device to keep an injured Matt in Ambridge, causing havoc in Lillian's life.

Or it was Lily / Freddie / Nolethando

ppeatfruit · 30/10/2017 11:39

Was he pure? I didn't hear that bit . I'll LA.

Puremince · 30/10/2017 11:45

Justin is talking to Kenton at the Bull from 10.33 on. He says he wants to teach Matt a lesson he won't forget, and Kenton tries to talk him down.

Ceto · 30/10/2017 11:53

If they're following Christie conventions, that means Justin is innocent. The one making the most bloodcurdling threats is never the one that did it.

Helenluvsrob · 30/10/2017 11:58

OOOH that was an interesting episode! (at last!)

R4 · 30/10/2017 12:03

I don't supposed Lynda has the speed gun set up 24/7, with a night vision camera?

OuaisMaisBon · 30/10/2017 12:04

I think it was Justin, deliberately stealthily - I heard Matt cry something like: “Turn your lights on, man” just before he was hit.

EBearhug · 30/10/2017 12:13

If they didn't have lights on, they must have started in the village. You don't drive through country lanes at night without realising your lights aren't on, because you can't see. (Moon was just under 3/4 full.) I have managed to set off without lights on under street lights.

It's possible the scriptwriters haven't thought this through as much as I have, though.

ppeatfruit · 30/10/2017 12:21

There's that expression "Blind drunk" Maybe that was why Matt didn't see the car until it was too late and the lights weren't on. .

R4 · 30/10/2017 12:24

Matt was on tarmac, not grass, and said "dip your lights". The car wasn't being driven recklessly before the crash but screeched off afterwards, after the door was slammed shut. Oooh, I'm assuming that before and after were the same car - maybe Justin merely discovered already prostrate Matt and decided not to help him?

JessieMcJessie · 30/10/2017 12:41

Lots of interesting theories here.
Has anyone mentioned Lily? Hasn’t there been lots of build up for months about her driving recklessly fast? (No idea why on Earth she’d be out driving when Hunt Ball on at home but just chucking it in there Smile).

I can’t fathom at all why in earth Adam would have been at the ball but not drinking. They didn’t try to explain that did they?

Also, like others, bemused at Ian suddenly setting himself up as an outside caterer...

Do we think that Matt requesting the HB tickets and then not using them will ever be explained? Or are we just meant to think he planned a big showdown but then bottled out of it?

R4 · 30/10/2017 12:46

Do we think that Matt requesting the HB tickets and then not using them will ever be explained?

He got them gratis so it didn't cost him anything but cost the Hunt the price of two meals and Shula the aggro of messing around the caterers at short notice and the re-jigging of seating plans (twice). Pure petty maliciousness IMO.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 30/10/2017 13:03

Nic's involvement was just a plot device so that the village knows Matt hasn't left because his cases are still there. It won't have been her car. I also think the car sounded expensive and powerful.

How far is LL from The Bull? Did Justin drive or walk there?

Why was Adam at HB at all?

Presumably The Bull cctv footage will be examined so Adam punching Matt will be there.

So, answering my own question Adam was at the HB purely as a plot device so he could leave early; be in the vicinity ; have a demonstrable grudge against Matt and be the first and obvious and ultimately wrong suspect.

RolfNotRudolf · 30/10/2017 13:12

I thought what Matt said was to the effect that the driver had their full beam on ; so possibly down a country lane. Will LA at 2.

R4 · 30/10/2017 13:17

Adam punched Matt at Grey Gables (25th). Justin had a go at Matt at The Bull (13th).

driver had their full beam on ; so possibly down a country lane.
Yes, Matt had left the environs of the green and was on his (unsteady) way towards Lilian?

Puremince · 30/10/2017 13:22

Yes, Matt said "Dip your lights" He won't be able to describe the car, if he regains consciousness, because he was dazzled by the full beams.

Presumably the Bull's CCTV will only be checked for the night in question, so Adam thumping Matt might not be found.

ppeatfruit · 30/10/2017 13:25

I just LA and yes silly me Blush Justin was in The Bull, the most interesting thing was the gap between the time Matt was hit by the car and the next time we hear him moaning "Lilian …Lilian" The car drives off and I could distinctly hear running water, either he had fallen , or was pushed near the Am or the pond has running water. Or it's my laptop!!
