Thanks, R4, for the title (again!).

I'm your temporary host while PseudoBadger is on her sabbatical / prison term / secret mission.

Old hands and complete newbies all welcome.

Spoilers (eg Radio Times descriptions of future programmes) not welcome.

When will Matt reappear? Before / during / after the wedding?

The floor is yours...

Ménage is a French loan-word in English, it's just not the horsey one. Ménage means a household (it has other meanings in French too but they're not used in English), as in ménage-à-trois.

Gruach · 14/10/2017 20:51

Oh god. Excruciating memory. Double French, I must have been about 14. For prep we had to seek out phrases that included the word 'ménage'. I used a dictionary - what could possibly go wrong?

Delivered my phrase to the class. Lovely French teacher's mouth twitched.

It took me years to realise that 'ménage à trois' didn't just mean three people sharing a house. Blush

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 21:53

Where l am ménage is pronounced ‘minnog’. Grin

I’ve read the thread but not heard Thursday or Friday’s episodes yet. You can’t use ‘listen again’ without signing in now? What does the beeb use our details for?! l could get to bed and listen tonight. I’m in a lovely little guest house in lnverness - was at LochNessKnitFest. ‘‘Twas braw. Back to the fray tomorrow.

birdsdestiny · 14/10/2017 21:56

I have just listened. What is wrong with Lillian. I think a storyline about a woman liking her man to be forceful is a bit distasteful.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 21:57

I should point out that minnog in Scotland is a sort of cooperative savings scheme. But it’s the same word at the root of it.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 21:59

Especially after that Rob put Ambridge and it’s residents through. I must listen before commenting.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 22:20

its not it’s. I know how to speak proper, so a do.

Bekabeech · 14/10/2017 22:51

The thing is that Justin made that speech, just after lying over a minor thing. And when he is highly likely to be found out.
Lilian forgave him probably because it was time to and he’d admitted his mistake and assured her of his faithfulness.
But why did Justin lie about who found Ruby? He found Matt with her in the Bull, a very public place (and part owned by Lilian). Jolene already knew that Matt had found Ruby and was getting something for an improvised lead. And then he was seen publicly brawling with Matt.
In most villages this would have got back to Lilian before Justin returned home.
I like Philip, especially his distinctive voice.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 22:59

Really, l missed a fight? Wow.

Swannykazoo · 15/10/2017 07:56

Gruach that is priceless. And I apologise if Bertrand thought I was doing the lady version of mansplaining
Did anybody shudder with Justin's "this is my house and I'll be sleeping in my own bed" - surely its still Lillian's house?

Bekabeech · 15/10/2017 08:37

Swanny - yes that was horrible - and as Matt pointed out before it is not Justin's house yet! (I wonder if Matt is delaying things to bring the purchase after the wedding).
Auld - not quite fisticuffs but enough that they needed Philip to get them to back off. (Another person who Lillian knows, and he'll be at the Hunt Ball too.)

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2017 10:30

Bek It was Lilian who was getting something for an improvised lead for Ruby!

I don't reckon that Lily was being racist, just snobby. There's a difference.

Gherkinsmummy · 15/10/2017 10:50

Haven't commented for ages. Why is Shula organising the hunt ball single handedly?

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2017 12:06

Bec Sorry, silly me Blush I hadn't heard Friday's ep. !!

EBearhug · 15/10/2017 13:20

Did anybody shudder with Justin's "this is my house and I'll be sleeping in my own bed" - surely its still Lillian's house?

Yes.

Also, when he was saying his feelings for her were so strong since they met, that he''s had no need or desire to look at anyone else - there's an implication that if his feelings do diminish in some way, (as they are likely to do to some extent, just with the passage of time,) then he will have a need to look elsewhere.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2017 13:34

I don't know many any actually 70yr.olds who are as driven by the need for sex as JustLil . The SWs obviously haven't heard of prostate or DV problems in older people!

Vango · 15/10/2017 13:59

To be fair to Justin, it is his house in as much as he's paying rent for it and is entitled therefore to consider it his home.

And I didn't hear any 'racist slurs' in the Lily/Noli exchange either.

Vango · 15/10/2017 14:01

Jolene was looking for a bit of string wasn't she? Lillian was at home, ringing round?

Gruach · 15/10/2017 14:08

'urban' in that context could only have one intent.

(I interpreted it as Lily using racism to give weight to social snobbery to disguise horror at another attractive young woman trespassing on her patch.)

Vango · 15/10/2017 14:13

Lily doesn't strike me as someone in any way insecure about herself. So confident is she in her own status and beliefs that I think she was genuinely surprised that her cousin wasn't immediately grateful for her fashion advice. That's all I heard and I doubt if anything else was intended.

ppeatfruit · 15/10/2017 14:47

Yes I agree Vango

So Philip broke up a 'fight' between Justin and Matt. AND calmed down a stressed Alastair. Is he the fairy godmother in builders' disguise? Who will he bring (or meet at) the Hunt Ball ? Grin

EBearhug · 15/10/2017 19:11

Why didn't Lilian just say she'd been in Cheltenham with Marcie so wasn't back for supper? The more different lies you tell, the more likely you'll be found out. You'd think Lilian would have some awareness of that, it's hardly the first time she's done things which aren't out in the open.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 15/10/2017 19:20

Bleurgh- what a ghastly episode. Lily and Pipsqueak. Henwee and Ian and Adam's baby talk. Justin and Fagash's lecherous cackling.

TheAntiBoop · 15/10/2017 19:25

So Lillian is annoyed at Justin for lying about seeing Miranda

And then lies about seeing Matt?

They really need to sort Henry out

AuldHeathen · 15/10/2017 19:36

Lily and Pip sounded dreadful, yes, but the scenes with Henry and lan and Adam were quite good. Henry is starting to sound a little older.
