The Archers: The Crook, the Vet, His Wife & Her Lodger - discussion #80

In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

R4 You missed that Caroline is no more, Oliver had decided to stay in AMB. with her ashes at GG whose fate was in balance for a while. Oh and there was vandalism\ xenophobia at the pickers' caravans.

Lexi and Rory are an item. Feebs had a one nighter with a picker and there was a pregnancy scare, which bought them together strangely. Lil has 'finished' with Matt and will be married on Dec. 22nd. Adam and Ian are looking at adoption.

birdsdestiny No one would adopt if every couple had to be faithful, or single person couldn't have a relationship.

Cromwell1536 · 11/09/2017 15:30

So how many affairs has Brine had? Mandy (when was that? was it actually a storyline or just reported as distant past? and who is Mandy Beesborough??); Caroline (did Jenny get over that one and become friends with Caroline? ); Siobhan. Any more?

Blimey. Even if three is the lot, Jenny really has scraped the barrel. Hope the posh kitchen and jewellery were worth it!

Imbroglio · 11/09/2017 15:44

I think he chased Betty Tucker when she was cleaning for them.

FancyForgetting · 11/09/2017 15:54

Yup, he definitely pursued Betty and, around the same time I think, even Pat!

Never have been able to warm to the character, more sleazy than roguish as far as I'm concerned!

R4 · 11/09/2017 16:42

pp I was being funny (or so I thought); my list would cover any summer-listening in the last decade.
You are right about Caroline. In my head she died in February because that is when Sara died. Avocado see if you can find the episode (11/07/17), it's a real tearjerker.

Gruach · 11/09/2017 19:19

Indeed, Bore.

And it clearly won't be Cecil who disrupts the natural order at the Flower and Produce show. Lexi is set to overthrow the baking aristocracy. Grin

selsigfach · 11/09/2017 20:36

So Iain, on judging the apple pies, will be so bowled over by Lexi's efforts that he'll wave the job fairy's wand and give her a job in the kitchens. The total non-surprise will be more than made up by JD's silent rage.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/09/2017 21:20

Yup, Lexi will produce an apple-filled Banitsa with plenty of cinnamon!

AuldAlliance · 11/09/2017 22:16

There might have to be an oven fairy, too, for Lexi to manage that.
Does she not live in a caravan?
Or maybe the pickers' caravans are all full of JD's cast-off ovens...

(relurking now)

Gruach · 11/09/2017 22:21

She'll do all her baking at Roy's ...

selsigfach · 11/09/2017 22:24

There has to be a reference to a bun in the oven for the next thread at this rate!

BertrandRussell · 11/09/2017 23:18

Country people outraged by cat catching mouse shock.

C8H10N4O2 · 12/09/2017 07:26

I remember Brian chasing Betty Tucker and I think it was Jill who took him to task for it. Jenny wasn't particularly nice to Lexie after the book subject was raised but at the time it was a massive humiliation for her - bad enough having a husband chasing everything that moves but to have the village sniggering at you about it whilst you try to make the best of it is something that never really got the sympathy it deserved.

Cat kills small furry and feathered creatures. Hold the front page.

Ceto · 12/09/2017 08:54

I wonder if Hilda Ogden will turn out to be Stan?

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2017 10:19

Sorry R4 (embarrassed emojji) !

I love the actor who plays Brine though, you could hear the 'interest'. in his voice when meeting Lexi and Rory recently, esp Lexi of course. He plays a sleazeball very well!

Bertrand Aaah you have to remember that Robert is an 'animal hugging' ex townie and a twitcher. Every little beating heart is precious!

Though of course there is less wildlife in the countryside now due to the Brian type sprayers and hedge removers etc.

R4 · 12/09/2017 11:25

No worries pp. Smile

I get that Robert, as a twitcher, might worry about Hilda and birds but you would think that, being married to gardener-Lynda, he would be less concerned about the like of mice.

Who is Stan?

Abra1d · 12/09/2017 12:22

*Yesterday 22:21 Gruach

She'll do all her baking at Roy's ...*

Oooh-er, missus.

ppeatfruit · 12/09/2017 12:51

Stan was married to Hilda Ogden in Corrie R4 ! It was quite a long time ago though!

R4 · 12/09/2017 13:46

Ah, thanks. I did wonder if it was a TA pet or a Corrie reference.
Googling only gave me TA+Stan = Terry Molloy playing a Stan Harvey (related to Jean?Grin ) in Crossroads.

selsigfach · 12/09/2017 15:20

What on earth are the expecting Alistair to do though? Amputate a leg so Hilda is less likely to catch birds? I was expecting to dig up Bill and Ben when Peggy was getting all shifty about the bird table site.

TeenTimesTwo · 12/09/2017 19:19

Excellent episode re Adoption information evening. Good accurate portrayal as far as my experience goes.

oldfatandtired1 · 12/09/2017 20:12

For all the Nancy Banks Smith fans - her latest glorious column is up in The Guardian Smile

echt · 12/09/2017 21:39

I enjoyed NB-S article, and the list of "alternative" sproggings does make Ambridge rather unusual.

On the adoption front, I found it it bit hard to swallow that Adam and Ian hadn't done some reading up on the process beforehand. Haven't they heard of the internet? Not saying going to the meeting was unlikely, just a couple of intelligent men would have read up.

choccyp1g · 13/09/2017 09:24

It sounded as though Adam and Ian will change places; Ian has dreamed of a "perfect" baby, and will take a long time to get the hang of taking an older "damaged" child, while Adam is liking the idea of actually helping a child.

Bekabeech · 13/09/2017 09:27

choccyp1g - I agree, which is good because it would make a great long term story if handled properly.
