In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

They fostered teens, but really it was very much a background story. (I don't recollect them fostering for all that long either, but maybe I'm forgetting.)

Ian didn't say he 'wants a baby' did he? I think he said he 'wants a child', so adopting a 4-6 yo could work in lots of ways.

AuldHeathen · 02/09/2017 16:37

Didn't Christine and George foster? Or was it Bert and 'is Freda? One of those couples, l think, were birth parents to one and adopted or fostered another.

cheminotte · 02/09/2017 16:37

I do hope Adam doesn't agree to a baby as the magic bullet that will save his marriage. Adam is 50 but I thought Ian was a bit younger for some reason?

TeenTimesTwo · 02/09/2017 16:42

Agree, a sticking plaster baby however they get one would be awful.

Christine & George adopted their son Peter.

AuldHeathen · 02/09/2017 16:42

Times like these l really miss the walking Archers encyclopaedia that was my mum. I think it was more complicated than that. Christine wasn't a birth mother, shewas a step mother though. Okay, l give up!

R4 · 02/09/2017 16:44

Adam is 50 but I thought Ian was a bit younger for some reason?

Ian seems younger. He comes across as the junior partner in a I-can't-believe-my-luck / punching-above-my-weight-here sort of way.

Gruach · 02/09/2017 16:55

Which reminds me - I'm worried that Christine might be ill. First she cried off something and then Peggy was scornful of her "bothering the doctor again". Not long for this world?

AuldHeathen · 02/09/2017 17:02

Isn't Ian's boyishness to do with him beng, at heart, a happy person, whereas Adam is the opposite.

Maybe it's Christine's actress who ill, or wants out. I wouldn't blame her!

LucretiaBourgeois · 02/09/2017 19:04

Christine & George adopted their son Peter.

Wasn't Peter adopted by Christine and Paul, her first husband? What ever happened to him (Peter I mean)? He's never referred to these days - in fact as far as I can recall he was very rarely referred to at all. I'm confident one of you will know, though Smile .

TeenTimesTwo · 02/09/2017 19:09

Ooh I didn't know that. Didn't know she was married before George.

cheminotte · 02/09/2017 19:11

That's a good point auld - he is basically an optimist to Adam's pessimist.

Gruach · 02/09/2017 19:16

Peter. Even the BBC don't have much.

As I recall he is or was based in Berlin (so I've always made an assumption about which orchestra) ...

I'm sure I remember Christine going to visit him at some time in the last fifteen years maybe.

Mootsie · 02/09/2017 19:53

I'm worried that Christine might be ill.

Cat scratch fever? Grin

ppeatfruit · 03/09/2017 08:28

Teen It wasn't a background story; If I remember correctly there were 2 or 3 and the main one was a girl who had proper speaking part in TA. She was mentioned (was she there?) at Caro's funeral.

This weekend's FT money supplement has a DP spread "If a financial advisor came to Ambridge'. Haven't read it all as yet, but there's a good line of incredulity about how money circulates between families and no-one ever goes to bank! Don't know whether the ignorance about benefits is noted or not. Looking forward to a proper catch up on weekend papers this evening.

Ceto · 03/09/2017 13:53

I do hope that article highlights Pat'n'Tone's complete failure to get a valuation before selling their land, let alone legal advice. Also the fact that no-one seems to have heard of housing benefit or tax credits.

TeenTimesTwo · 03/09/2017 16:13

FT online link here

cheminotte · 03/09/2017 16:20

Excellent article T3 , thanks for the link. I wonder if @Daddaddad has read it?

ThatsNotMyToddler · 03/09/2017 18:43

Ceto there was a much-scorned statement made by the SWs after the EdnEm Rickyard/foodbank debacle to the effect of "we're not going down the benefits route with this SL". So essentially any financial (or other) realism that gets in the way of a good story is ignored!

Imbroglio · 03/09/2017 19:17

Oh Ian....

Ceto · 03/09/2017 19:37

I'm confused about this child storyline with Ian and Adam. They've been rubbing along for years without mentioning it, and when Adam brought it up it seemed as if he was maybe reconsidering. But now it looks as if he brought the subject up only for the sake of telling Ian there was no chance, which was never exactly going to make him happy.

SomeDoNot · 03/09/2017 19:58

I am unsure how they would fund the £100k

  • needed for a surrogate baby anyway.
Imbroglio · 03/09/2017 20:39

Perhaps this is paving the way for Ian to get another job or start his own place somewhere else, and Adam will have to choose...

birdsdestiny · 03/09/2017 21:31

Was it not because Lillian told Adam that he needed to find a way to prove his commitment to Ian. So Adam asked him what one thing would make him happy. And Ian told him..

Imbroglio · 03/09/2017 21:39

Adam never comes over as 100% committed to Ian. I feel he loves him but Ian isn't quite exciting enough. There is always a sense of compromise. Home Farm isn't quite satisfying him either.
