The Archers: The Crook, the Vet, His Wife & Her Lodger - discussion #80

In full acknowledgement of PseudoBadger's great achievement in providing the previous 79 threads over the past 4 years (and credit to R4 for this thread's title)...

Discuss TA (The Archers). New posters encouraged - it's not (too) cliquey here and plenty of regulars are happy to answer questions. Archers

One rule: no spoilers (ie no mentioning future plot teasers from Radio Times listings etc) - there's a separate thread for that.

So, is Phoebe pregnant? will Anisha dob in (dobbin - geddit?) Alistair?

PS I don't presume to take on PB's role permanently - hopefully the job of starting new threads will rotate among regulars until she returns

I really dislike Matt and Lillian. I see Lillian as a sort of horrible, cackling Barbara Windsor type condoning the actions of her loveable east end villains.

AuntyElle · 27/08/2017 12:36

yy LillianGish:

"I predict she'll stay with Justin for the time being, but his trips away will begin to irk more and more - too reminiscent of his relationship with Miranda (whose shoes she will begin to realise she has stepped into). I thought the scene at the property sale was as instructive as the scene in the hotel suite - she and Matt were working together and she was enjoying it whereas Justin is a lone operator. I don't think we've seen the last of Matt."

Imbroglio · 27/08/2017 13:01

Well Justin owns the Dower House now. Lilian was secure - now she could lose her home.

AuldHeathen · 27/08/2017 22:42

The continuity man was good tonight. 'And if Adam is wrong he'll feel a right Charlie'. Smile

I can't decide if Lilian and Matt dtd. Husband gave a big long answer and l still don't know So, vipers, did they or didn't they, or is it being left to work it out ourselves?

I wonder if the SWs are up to a foetal alcohol syndrome SL, re-Alice and Chris.

90shadesofnavy · 27/08/2017 23:47

that's weird auld that's just what I thought - especially after all his wistful comments at the party about longing for kids of his own.

Binkybix · 28/08/2017 07:17

Can someone remind me where Will got his inheritance from please?

R4 · 28/08/2017 09:19

Will got his money from some distant relative, "Aunt Hilda" (I can't remember which side of the family she came from; think it might have been Clarrie's side). I presume that she wrote the will after the birth of Will but before the birth of Ed, and never updated.
Basically, it was a lump sum out of the blue that Will got and Ed didn't. Just like Will got the fairy godmother and Ed didn't.

Ceto · 28/08/2017 10:07

Just had something on my FB feed proudly announcing that these people are advising TA on all kefir-related storylines.

R4 · 28/08/2017 10:56

I tried searching for something on kefir the other day and they came top of the Google list.
They must have an on-the-ball PR/marketing bod.

SomeDoNot · 28/08/2017 13:28

Emma doesn't have to live with her in-laws. It is totally unrealistic storyline that annoys me.. When they had to leave brickyard they could have claimed housing benefit as they were on a low income.

Their income has probably gone up since then.

Imbroglio · 28/08/2017 14:05

Has Joe got a new pony? Where did she come from?

Imbroglio · 28/08/2017 14:06

Ah - I've just remembered its' the rescue pony that Alistair is paying for.

EBearhug · 28/08/2017 14:25

Yes. I am glad that we have been reminded of the pony, because there's been absolutely no mention of it since the rescue, and I suspect most of us had forgotten.

Binkybix · 28/08/2017 15:38

Thanks R4 Pretty bad form not to share it with Ed in those circumstances I'd say.

C8H10N4O2 · 28/08/2017 18:19

Just like Will got the fairy godmother and Ed didn't

Ed had a pretty effective fairy godfather instead.

Whilst I thought Will should have shared the money, it was still when the brothers were routinely at odds due to Emma running away with Ed and taking George away. Will had plenty of legitimate grievances against Ed going back quite a few years (AIR Ed was pretty much a shit and nasty with it at times, when young, Will's only crime in those days was to be hard working but terminally boring and not the sharpest knife in the drawer).

What I hate about the way Ed/Will have been written over the last 2-3 years is both the visitation of the personality transplant fairy and the one dimensional characters the fairy has left. Suddenly St Ed is saviour of the village and Will is a nasty, misogynist git. Neither ring true as normal character developments.

EBearhug · 28/08/2017 18:45

Will is a nasty, misogynist git.

I think that's been there for more than 2 or 3 years (so predates SOC.)

C8H10N4O2 · 28/08/2017 18:58

I think that's been there for more than 2 or 3 years (so predates SOC.)

But I don't think it was there in anything like the way it is now. I remember him making some assumptions about Nick early on and both Nick and Clarrie remonstrating with him which he took in fairly puzzled acceptance. More almost that his success as a father was defined by Nick 'not needing' to work which isn't that unusual even now.

Now he is actively 'anti' and that seems to have appeared more recently. To me it just feels like lazy writing and an editorial decision somewhere that Ed would henceforth be the 'good' brother and Will the bad. There seems to be much more unidimensional character writing than in the past (although I could be remembering via rose tinted). The character transplant fairy OTOH has been an annoyance forever.

C8H10N4O2 · 28/08/2017 19:01

Or to put it another way Will was more 'everydaysexism' than 'F4J'. In that respect he was the same as Ed (witness Ed's objections to Emma working in the chicken factory which was as much about how he looked to the world as Emma's workload and also his assumption that Emma would help wiht the B&B rather than him).

Binkybix · 28/08/2017 19:57

Ok thanks - if the inheritance was during the arguments I understand more him not sharing. I must admit that I have had a few (very) long Archers breaks over the years and I ageee that Will is worse than I remember from the olden days.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/08/2017 20:43

Hello all. Have a lot to catch up with here but must just mention that the actor who is now playing Chris Carter is in ep 7 series 7 of GoT. Will not say what he does in case anyone has not seen it yet.

R4 · 28/08/2017 21:18

I can't get Listen Again to work. Is it me or them? Have they changed the way it works?

EBearhug · 28/08/2017 23:40

Yes, you have to login or something.

Vango · 29/08/2017 00:04

What was tonight all about? I'm sure it's not a year since good old chippy Emma was referring to Caroline as 'Lady Muck' after the Grundys had managed to undo the refurbishment of Grange Farm and Caroline had the audacity to be unamused!

Ceto · 29/08/2017 01:28

My recollection is that Will has been behaving like a git towards Ed'n'Emmur for years; there was a temporary ceasefire recently but Will is now essentially reverting to form.

DadDadDad · 29/08/2017 07:05

Yes, Gasp0de, GoT spoilers definitely not welcome on this thread, especially as I am still working through season 5! Shock
