The Archers - It's not about the money, money, money, think about Jill's honey, honey, honey, Justin wants to farm by satnav, forget about the prize tag.

Will The Dopeys have buggered off by the end of this thread?
Will Tom finally reach home, after weeks of trekking through the tundra?

this one sounded like Charlie/Todd/The Waiter to which I would add the paramedics, Johnny's tutor, the doctor and every other bit part (in fact perhaps he was playing all those parts as well).

Cretaceous · 28/11/2014 08:40

Do you think that Old Tom had asked for a pay rise, or something, and so was sacked? I actually liked the voice of Old Tom, as he was a character I loved to hate.

BringYourOwnSnowman · 28/11/2014 09:28

I wouldn't have thought so cret as after being sent off to Canada he probably would have realised asking for more money was pointless.

I reckon it's just a job for the boys. They read a lot of people commenting on how mush they hate pip and toms voice so replaced them. Not understanding that sometimes people love the things they hate!!

So changes I don't like

  1. having loads of speaking parts but generally just bit parts and not established characters
  2. all the new actors who seem wooden and all sound the same
  3. ridiculous storylines
  4. personality transplants to fit the ridiculous storylines
PseudoBadger · 28/11/2014 09:31

Old Tom was very distinctive. I did quite enjoy how hopeful New Tom sounded with "if he recovers...."

Does Eleanor Bron have any offspring who may pop up soon?

JessieMcJessie · 28/11/2014 09:35

They got it wrong on Old Tom - most people were fine with Tom'ss voice but loved to hate Tom as a character. And it was good that his voice was distinctive as it helped to focus the hatred!

On the other hand Pip's voice was rubbish and I think made people hate the character more than they were supposed to. New Pip is not a bad change really.

How long till a Troughton grandson is takes over the part of Henry I wonder...?

PseudoBadger · 28/11/2014 09:37

I don't have a problem with the young-uns (Henry, Ben, Ruari) going through a few actors before they settle.

The moment Johnny awkwardly confessed to Helen he's 'not that keen on the Borchester Blue' was very natural. I do like Johnny.

Why did Joe and Eddie not notice that Spaceman Came Travelling was stuck in a loop when Carol was admiring their costumes for the Pardon?

unitarian · 28/11/2014 10:51

I'm convinced Carol's going to be arrested if she keeps giving these odd drinks to people.

minklundy · 28/11/2014 10:59

I agree Old Tom's character was annoying, not his voice. and being annoying WAS his character.
Pip's voice was annoying...and her character.

I still wonder if Old Tom said- "look this plot is tosh. wtf is going on? Tom wouldn't do that. the cabin plot is implausible. I want more sausage related stories". And got sacked for it.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 28/11/2014 11:35

New Tom was just so wrong. I thought Old Tom had quite an attractive voice, you could see how he could talk all these women into getting engaged to him despite his (presumed) constant aroma of pig.

Loved Johnny and Helen's exchanges though, not just the cheese-hating but also the "It sounds weird to me" "This is Ambridge, you'll get used to it." :)

Johnny is a good actor. But why was Tom so unsurprised to see Johnny there? How many times have they actually met?

Icimoi · 28/11/2014 12:31

To be fair, Old Tom's voice was fine when he was in irritating/petulant mode, and when he was enthusing about pork; but he wasn't really up to more heavy duty emotional stuff - he still tended to sound a bit petulant.

WaltzingWithBares · 28/11/2014 12:45

I must admit I wanted to like NewTom, a search through old threads will reveal that we found old Tom very irritating! But that was his character, not his voice!!!

Yes I agree with this and other similar comments.

I've said it before, and the change of actor rather proves my theory. I'm sure the SWs have always wanted us to like Tom (and Helen) more than we do. They've made the actor a scapegoat - but really it's the character that we don't like, not the actor. I always felt with Tom that the SWs wanted us to see him as forward-thinking, energetic, dynamic, moving the farm forward, and struggling to negotiate the difficulties of winning round a traditional and stubborn set-in-his-ways father. But for us listeners, his flaws of being arrogant, obsessed and un-empathetic with his nearest and dearest outweighed his attributes. The SWs fault though, not the actor's.

This theory isn't true of Pip though. For me the new Pipster is an improvement.

I agree that NotTom was making a concerted effort to sound a bit like OldTom in th way he spoke when he got back. I was less annoyed by him than I expected to be however that may just be because of the irritating Georgie's irritating awkward question debacle at the Turkey Pardon (FFS)

PseudoBadger · 28/11/2014 15:28

I listened to the repeat and have decided that NewTom is too young. He's a year younger than me. He sounds 18.

OP posts:
BoreOfWhabylon · 28/11/2014 15:31

Exactly what I was thinking, Pseudo. Tom is supposed to be around 34 isn't he?

PseudoBadger · 28/11/2014 15:35

He'll be 34 in February. He talked, well, like Johnny. Or Daniel. He was "too wired" to eat?

OP posts:
BringYourOwnSnowman · 28/11/2014 16:29

Tom sounds too young (way too young) and pip sounds too old

I like to think I'm pretty good on voices/accents (it's nature's way of compensating for how crap I am with faces) and I'm beginning to struggle with the new voices a bit. I can see Tom and Charlie getting quite mixed up.

Carol is beginning to irritate a hell of a lot, her smooth voice and her just rustling up some potion for Fallon brought me out in the rage for some reason. I was also highly annoyed at Fallon and her's scene with the turkey question.

I love love love the thread title though...

unitarian · 28/11/2014 17:44

Carol makes my blood boil for some reason. It may be that I find the character patronising and smug.

dairyfarmerswife · 28/11/2014 18:41

I thought Tom being too wired was a bit of an odd phrase too. Are we supposed to have picked up on Fallon's headache, following on from her being really tired a few weeks ago? Or was it just another excuse to squeeze Carol's potions in?

lljkk · 28/11/2014 19:06

Neah, sorry, not too young, not at all wrong, NewTom is Dead Sexy.
He's MINE MINE MINE :).

BringYourOwnSnowman · 28/11/2014 19:09

Oh my god. What the biggest load of old horseshit
