Æthelstan [shameless copy and paste there from R4's post] does sound a bit like a house name, doesn't it? Retirement abode of Mr Stanley and Mrs Ethel Trudge. However, many of those old names are coming back, so who knows?

i don't actually have a problem with it as a name for a child - it has a very important history, v noble etc. just not my child. i like "boring" names

Stanislaw is a very fine name too. If you had twin boys you could call them Æthelstan and Stanis?aw and they could both be Stan for short.
