Would you be happy with this finish?

I've had a log cabin built and paid an electrician a lot of money to do the electrics but I'm not happy with the finish - wondering if my expectations are too high and this is acceptable? Funnily enough the electrician said it is. He said the roof will settle down over time and there will be less gap. This is up near the ceiling where the wires go into the ceiling. I haven't paid him the final installment yet and he's hassling me to pay although he only finished a couple of days ago. This isn't the finish i was expecting, i would have thought the white plastic thing should extend into the ceiling a short way to hide the wires entirely (there's three of these but only attached a photo of the worst one - on this one the hole and the plastic thing don't line up anyway) Any experienced people around to tell me if AIBU?

I'd want it fixed before I paid the last installation.

If you pay first he will never fix it.

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 13:41

This is the quality of the work he's done inside the house exactly as he left it. Not sure if I'm expecting too much or if any electrician would have done the same bending the wire round the corner in between the trunking.

😮 That doesn't look good at all!

CoastalWave · 04/07/2022 13:43

It's shit.

Bellyups · 04/07/2022 13:44

Looks like a handy man has bodged it. No, I wouldn’t be happy

SharpLily · 04/07/2022 13:44

Not acceptable. Don't pay until he's fixed it but be aware that if he's just not very good at the job then you may never be happy with what he's done and it might be worth getting someone else to look at it. That's lazy, lazy work.

AuraBora · 04/07/2022 13:45

That looks terrible. I wouldn't be happy either.

indigo91986 · 04/07/2022 13:46

Looks like a trainees first attempt

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 13:47

It's not just me then! He messed us around so much, i dont want him back - i thought about getting a quote to rectify it and try and knock it off what i owe him but first wanted to check if I'm just fussy and he's right about the roof settling. I still owe him £800.

Both pics are crap, the wires should be completely covered

BlanketsBanned · 04/07/2022 13:49

I would worry about the wiring in the roof space as well if thats his standard of finish, of course the roof wont drop down to hide that hole, it needs a circular cover

WinterMusings · 04/07/2022 13:51

Keep your £800. Get someone else to fix it.

complete botch job!! Tell him so too next time he hassles for payment!

JuneOsborne · 04/07/2022 13:52

He just needs to put a collar on the one coming from the ceiling. It's so easy, I wonder why he's not just done it?

As for the other trunking, he's cut both pieces too short. He should have mitred the corner.

Fwiw, we had some electrics done recently and getting the collars off the electrician's was like getting blood out of a stone. Weird.

The finish isn't right at all.

Lindy2 · 04/07/2022 14:00

No that's a poor job.

Hopefully the wiring is OK but the finishing off is a bodge job and he knows it.

The ceiling isn't miraculously move so that the hole gets covered. It needs a plastic cover on it and the wall wiring needs to be properly boxed in with the correct length of cover not bits that are too short.

Is he on Check a Trade or anything like that? If he is say he needs to sort it all before payment or you will have to leave a poor review.

2bazookas · 04/07/2022 14:09

I would not. Either, he redoes the work . OR, he reduces the account significantly.

You don't pay a professional to end up with a shoddy DIY bodge job.

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 14:56

Found his Instagram page and there's some on there with a great finish so clearly i was unlucky! Ok I'll send him an email later and tell him I'm not paying.

Is he a qualified electrician, is he a member of their association, is his work guaranteed and insured, you will need an electrical safety check certificate too. Is his name anywhere else but instagram,

Thinkingblonde · 04/07/2022 15:06

There’s no way a qualified electrician would leave it like that. Exposed wires, holes uncapped, trunking too short. I’d worry about the work you can’t see. Don’t pay him until he rectifies it.

LimonataRocks · 04/07/2022 15:09

These are both such easy fixes.

The ceiling needs a collar and the trunking needs a corner piece fitting. They are pretty basic DIY jobs if you get to the point of just wanting to get them fixed regardless of how the conversation with the electrician goes.

BlanketsBanned · 04/07/2022 15:10

I would get a proper qualified electrician in to check his work, I am not sure I would trust him to safely rectify that shite. Can you access the roof space.

This. I work in construction and agree with these comments.

Tbh I would have expected a metal conduit not plastic as a nicer finish but unless every little detail was agreed then this is how tradesmen get away with using the cheaper option.

AWobABobBob · 04/07/2022 15:29

Also if he starts getting funny, you can threaten him with going to his membership board.

His quote said he was registered with the relevant bodies and that i will get a safety certificate. Here's another picture for you. This is how he's left my bathroom.

My god that's awful - all of it. Definitely do not pay him the final sum.

WhatTheWhoTheWhatThe · 04/07/2022 15:46

Yeah I wouldn’t be giving him another penny. I’d be a bit concerned about the quality of the electrical work too
