Would you be happy with this finish?

I've had a log cabin built and paid an electrician a lot of money to do the electrics but I'm not happy with the finish - wondering if my expectations are too high and this is acceptable? Funnily enough the electrician said it is. He said the roof will settle down over time and there will be less gap. This is up near the ceiling where the wires go into the ceiling. I haven't paid him the final installment yet and he's hassling me to pay although he only finished a couple of days ago. This isn't the finish i was expecting, i would have thought the white plastic thing should extend into the ceiling a short way to hide the wires entirely (there's three of these but only attached a photo of the worst one - on this one the hole and the plastic thing don't line up anyway) Any experienced people around to tell me if AIBU?

Would you be happy with this finish?

I’d go back to the log cabin place and show them the pictures.

www.niceic.com/householder/find-a-contractor

they also have a "wall of shame", see if his name is on there

PeppaPigIsAnnoying · 04/07/2022 18:50

Even for you're average person off the street with no qualifications the standard of work in the photos is absolutely awful

I doubt he has the skills to put it right tbh

jackspratswife01 · 04/07/2022 19:00

I wouldn't be happy if my husband did this level of work let alone a trade person !!

PeterCannaeRun · 04/07/2022 19:01

I have had a lot of electrical work done on my house and your electrician is a disgrace. That bathroom photo really sums up how poor a workman he is. There is absolutely no pride in his work at all. My electrician has run cabling through my loft as he would avoid surface mounting at all costs because trunking is bulky and quite ugly as a finish.

There is no way that the photos on his Instagram are his. Have you done a reverse google image for them?

Definitely check his membership, I am sure he isn't registered.

Badfootkk · 04/07/2022 19:03

Shocking. Awful. Do not pay him anything until you get further registration details and work rectified.

Tothepoint99 · 04/07/2022 19:09

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 15:38

His quote said he was registered with the relevant bodies and that i will get a safety certificate. Here's another picture for you. This is how he's left my bathroom.

Woah. This is horrendous!

You have to decide between cutting losses and never having him back or paying for someone else to rectify.

Do you think it likely he'll say no problem I'll come by and fix without any kick back?

Pleaseletmeconfirm · 04/07/2022 19:18

I'm ⚡️⚡️⚡️shocked ⚡️⚡️just looking at those pictures.

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 19:19

I don't want him back in my house to be honest, i was really tempted to kick him off the job part way through for being so flaky and lying to us about what time he was going to be here/why he was so late etc but id already paid him most of the amount and couldn't really afford to lose it.

Lessons have been learnt by me about getting details of their accreditations etc first but he talked the talk, sounded really professional and his quote was in line with the other ones i got - and he came recommended so thought it was going to be ok.

I'd be nervous that his work wasn't safe. What about getting in someone who knows what they are doing to check it.

Tbh unsafe electrics are extremely dangerous and could also affect your insurance. I would contact citizens advice, trading standards and look at the government's Registered Competent person website for advice.

SarahShorty · 04/07/2022 20:33

People don't take pride in their work anymore. No, that's bloody awful.

Therunecaster · 04/07/2022 20:41

Hi can I ask. Are you in the North East by any chance?

No I'm in the south - is there two of them out there that's this bad!?

Yes I had a dreadful cowboy. There work looks very similar!

I just had a look at CAB, ill look at the others suggested too. Can't find any trace of him on the registered competent person website. Ive drafted a very strongly worded email but I'll ask him to provide the certificate etc before i send it to him. Basically setting out all the issues and suggesting he accept the amount paid so far in full and final settlement for the work done then i can use the £800 to get it checked and rectified.

I've just showed electrician DP the photos - his actual words were 'who the fuck did that'. He said you need to get the electrician you've used back to fix it as a new electrician will want to strip it all out and start again so that they know it's their own work rather than trying to fix someone else's.

Someaddedsugar · 04/07/2022 20:59

Sorry I've just seen your latest post. DP has said if he's not registered he needs to be named and shamed.

Staters · 04/07/2022 21:10

Awful. I’ve done a better job with the trunking myself. There’s no way I’d be paying the rest unless he rectifies the issues.
What is the cable for in the bathroom?

CornishTiger · 04/07/2022 21:16

It’s totally shocking. Please tell the log cabin supplier too.

CatNamedEaster · 04/07/2022 21:25

I wouldn't assume that just because someone is qualified that a) they will be good or b) their trade body will be any use either. We had a full rewire by someone who was part of NICEIC. Shit workmanship, wanted to take down all our ceilings rather than channel into stud/plasterboard walls, left every socket and switch off because he said it was illegal for us to unscrew them for the plasterer, disturbed and then left parts of ceilings that he said might have asbestos in them, left us without power for 4 days and took about 4 weeks to finish. Trade body weren't interested.

OnTheBoardwalk · 04/07/2022 21:31

Looks like the botch job the previous owners did on my house. When I got a survey done I was told the electrics were lethal and yes as PP said it was a strip back job by a new electrician

have you got legal advice and/or emergency cover with your house insurance? Maybe give them a call?

AWobABobBob · 04/07/2022 21:44

That's horrendous and not even safe putting that electric cable running along underneath the radiator (water). I'd report him to his governing body.

Electrics from the fuse box to the log cabin. Our bathroom is downstairs.

Bloody hell, the pics are awful.

Let us know how it goes, OP. I doubt he has any certs at all!
