Would you be happy with this finish?

I've had a log cabin built and paid an electrician a lot of money to do the electrics but I'm not happy with the finish - wondering if my expectations are too high and this is acceptable? Funnily enough the electrician said it is. He said the roof will settle down over time and there will be less gap. This is up near the ceiling where the wires go into the ceiling. I haven't paid him the final installment yet and he's hassling me to pay although he only finished a couple of days ago. This isn't the finish i was expecting, i would have thought the white plastic thing should extend into the ceiling a short way to hide the wires entirely (there's three of these but only attached a photo of the worst one - on this one the hole and the plastic thing don't line up anyway) Any experienced people around to tell me if AIBU?

Would you be happy with this finish?

Send him your photos and the high quality finish ones from his instagram... say... spot the difference! Get a quote to put right and decide if you want him to fix or reduce the amount due... (though I do know that trades are often reluctant to touch other people's work and can be prone to overcharging and finding more to be fixed than strictly necessary).

alwaysmovingforwards · 04/07/2022 16:01

That's a very low DIY standard.

For a professional it's terrible.

iknowimcoming · 04/07/2022 16:09

What everyone else said but I'd also tell him he's not getting any more cash before you've got the safety certificate (as I suspect that will never arrive)

pencilpot99 · 04/07/2022 16:10

How do you know that the pictures he's posted on instagram are his work and not just random pics, taken off the internet? The finish on those is not good. As PPs have said, I'd be worried about the quality of the work you can't see.

Oblomov22 · 04/07/2022 16:13

All photos get worse and worse. This isn't a skilled workman, this is a bodge.

ZenNudist · 04/07/2022 16:15

He is a bodger. Yanbu not to pay and he needs to redo it properly.

mm40 · 04/07/2022 16:17

That is a dreadful job ( from someone who has done this type of work 100’s of times.

Roselilly36 · 04/07/2022 16:18

Awful job, we have a garden office that was data cabled, lights & power points installed, electrical company did a fantastic, neat & tidy job. That job looks very amateur. Definitely complain.

spiderlight · 04/07/2022 16:19

That looks very shoddy. I wouldn't be happy at all with that finish.

MadeForThis · 04/07/2022 16:21

Has he given you the electric certs?

theemmadilemma · 04/07/2022 16:25

If you want a finish that shite you could have tackled it yourself ffs and left some one to finish the connections.

It's awful. I agree with sending him photos from his Insta with the finish you expected, vs the ones of his 'finished' work.

Would he like you to tag him so that he can show them off?

ticktickticktickBOOM · 04/07/2022 16:32

The pictures just get worse and worse!

Sorry OP - he's a chancer and doesn't seem to know what he's doing

This is the quality of the work he's done inside the house exactly as he left it. Not sure if I'm expecting too much or if any electrician would have done the same bending the wire round the corner in between the trunking.

That's not right at all, and with the first photo, it looks like he measured the pipe incorrectly and didn't want to be out of pocket for time/costs by re-doing or repairing it. I would email exactly what you are unhappy with and what you would like him to do to rectify it before making the final payment.

Squills · 04/07/2022 16:50

The work is beyond shoddy!

The first photo up near the ceiling shows that he's even managed to get the white plastic dirty. As to the other photos... words fail me.

I wouldn't pay him another penny. He can't be registered and produce work like that. I would get another electrician to check what he has done in terms of the actual electrical work. Provided everything is safe I think you then need a carpenter to box in the mess he has left.

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 17:00

I'll draft an email to him later setting out what the issues are. He keeps texting me asking me for photos of the work so he can use them to hook in more unsuspecting customers. I'll send him the photos I've put here.

As for his dog - he turned up 4 hours late one day and 3 hours late the next because he didn't have any childcare for his dog 🙄then left after an hour or two because his dog had hurt it's paw and he needed to go home and see to it.

Honestly the actual finish is the least of the issues we had actually getting him to do the work.

I think that's exactly what happened.

Biffatcrafts · 04/07/2022 17:02

Really poor work. I definitely would not be paying him any more money. It would make me doubt whether he is actually properly qualified. I'd also worry that if that's the quality of the bits you can see, what state are the bits you can't see? I'd also get his work inspected by a properly qualified independent electrician and be double checking whether any electrical safety certificate your current one gives you is actually valid.

BruceAndNosh · 04/07/2022 17:05

Wait! Did I do this while under the influence of alcohol?
That's the only reasonable explanation for such a botch job

Thinkingblonde · 04/07/2022 17:07

Just seen the pic of the bathroom…that’s awful. He’s not an electrician.

Eightiesfan · 04/07/2022 17:08

Gosh, that is a terrible finish, I suspect his Instagram pics were pinched from the internet.

It looks like a bodge job, definitely not the result of someone who has any pride in their work. I would be worried about the safety of the work he’s done and would get it all checked out to make sure it’s all up to standard.

MissStarry · 04/07/2022 17:14

Awful job - agree with pp; I’d also want all his work checked out thoroughly by someone else.

BlanketsBanned · 04/07/2022 17:46

Have you checked his so called membership of any registered organisation, who does he claim he is registered with, you can check if he is a member. Does he have anything else about himself except on instagram, like trusted traders, checkatrade etc.

Wouldyoubehappy · 04/07/2022 18:39

Unfortunately struggling to find anything out about where he's registered, the quote said he would provide an NIC/EIC certificate but doesn't have a registration number of any kind. I went with him because the log cabin providers recommended him and said they do loads of work with him and that it would make it easier. I'll definitely be sharing these pictures with them too!

BlanketsBanned · 04/07/2022 18:43

Certificates can easily be forged. Are there any logos on his paperwork. He is probably mates with the cabin suppliers and could be on commission.
