Would you be happy with this finish?

I've had a log cabin built and paid an electrician a lot of money to do the electrics but I'm not happy with the finish - wondering if my expectations are too high and this is acceptable? Funnily enough the electrician said it is. He said the roof will settle down over time and there will be less gap. This is up near the ceiling where the wires go into the ceiling. I haven't paid him the final installment yet and he's hassling me to pay although he only finished a couple of days ago. This isn't the finish i was expecting, i would have thought the white plastic thing should extend into the ceiling a short way to hide the wires entirely (there's three of these but only attached a photo of the worst one - on this one the hole and the plastic thing don't line up anyway) Any experienced people around to tell me if AIBU?

Would you be happy with this finish?

Yeah now you guys have said about another electrician might want to strip it all out and do it again, i might need to try and seek a partial refund for the amount I've already paid so I'll try my home insurance legal cover tomorrow (fingers crossed i have such a thing!)

I showed DH the photos, he’s an Approved Electrician and NVQ Assessor.
In his words “WTF. The ceiling wire, he’s either cut the pipe short or just used a length he had in the back of his van.
He’s used steel armoured cable, it’s heavy, thick, hard to bend, can’t get a 90d bend on it and it’s mainly for outside (I know this as we have it powering our outside sockets on the fence.)
The bathroom cable “Fucking disgraceful, that looks like armoured cable too, tell her to hold back the rest of the money.”

Wouldyoubehappy · 06/07/2022 07:26

It is all armoured cable yes he's just run the same cable directly from the fuse box all the way down the garden into the garden room. I've got another electrician (properly qualified/business presence online/tons of reviews/personally recommended) coming next week to have a look and see what he thinks. We told cowboy we weren't happy, he said he could come back and look at another way to run the cables through the house but he doubled down on the roof settling thing.

In your dh's opinion should he have used a different cable inside the house and connected it up outside to the armoured cable?

I’ve seen him use junction boxes to connect outside cable to inside cable. So most likely yes He’s in the shower so I’ll ask him later.

My electrician dh , says he's not an electrician , he's a cowboy.

Roselilly36 · 06/07/2022 08:21

It does seem a very odd way to go about it OP, my electrician took the cable from the fuse box, trunked, up into the loft and then outside down the wall and to the fuse box in the office, no way would I have entertained the idea of if being run through my bathroom! Very strange. I expect it will need to be redone completely, I don’t think you will get issued the correct safety certificates otherwise, you will need these if you move etc.

Thinkingblonde · 06/07/2022 08:28

Ignore that last comment, he’s used glands and junction boxes outside to three outside sockets, a power supply to the pond pump and a power supply to my shed. It runs along the fence, the garage wall then through the wall to the fuse board. The garage has a separate fuse board to the house. So didn’t need to take it to the main one. ( intergrated garage, not sure if that makes a difference)

I meant my last comment. I did a bit of Googling (DH is getting shaved now) It’s quite interesting ! There’s no way that would get passed.

Little update for you - the properly qualified electrician came round today and he was not impressed with the standard at all. He spotted a couple of mistakes which he's now corrected because he said it could have been a tiny tiny fire risk, but a risk none the less. He's going to do a quote to rectify it and said i should report mr cowboy to the nic/eic as the work isn't up to standard and his quote had misled us as to him actually being registered.

Lessons have been learnt for me, for sure!

Great update and you definitely need to report the cowboy.

Thinkingblonde · 15/07/2022 20:38

I was thinking about you just now and came on to see if there was an update, I’m so glad you’ve had a proper electrician to look at it.
We’ve had a bit of todo since then, DH fell off the seat on the bus, the bus went too fast around a bend and he fell off, into the aisle and cracked a rib. 11 hours in A&E. he’s getting better but very slowly.
I asked him if a cable could be connected to the steel Armoured in the consumer unit. He said he couldn’t really advise as he didn’t know how big a supply you need for your requirements, It’s all calculated with formulae. It sounds as if Cowboy isn’t registered to do domestic work.
Even though DH is a JIB Approved electrician and NVQ Assessor with more certificates I care to mention with years of experience he couldn’t wire up a socket in your house because he’s not registered to do it. It expired after he retired.
Hope every works out.

Thank you very much. I'm sorry to hear about your DH, i hope he feels better soon.

Still waiting for quote from the second electrician but now we know it's safe i don't mind waiting. A further little update - it turns out cowboy stuck the trunking to the wall with double sided sticky tape and it's come unstuck already - it's falling off the wall after less than 2 weeks. Just another thing to add to the list!

OP posts:
Thinkingblonde · 15/07/2022 23:10

I shouldn’t laugh but this bloke is comedy gold. ‘ Carry On Sparky’.
I think DH has used double sided tape on trunking but the cable was much lighter than SAC.

Wevthought we were being sensible going to the pub on the bus, not drink driving. Well we were coming home actually, he’d have been even more gutted if it happened on the way there.
