raspberry carpet: massive mistake? (Pic)

I need to carpet my landing and stairs and am wondering about a dark reddish pink?

It’s wallpapered in a lovely mint/sagey paper and we have cream waffle textured curtains

Photos below show the curtains/walls - would appreciate any input! I don’t want to end up with grey or brown if I can avoid it

I don’t want brown as we have a heavy old walnut wardrobe in the corner

Just wondering if this is a daft idea - I think pink can go very wrong! Either old lady or garish preteen colours

I think you should continue on your quest for pink/raspberry. This is what popped into my head when I read it: www.tapi.co.uk/carpet/enchanted the colour in the main pic

Thanks for all the help

I absolutely cannot have a pale or cream carpet - my children would have that wrecked in days and the dogs would love to help them 🙄

I didn’t want to go for neutrals but think I probably should do a variation of brown - perhaps tea colour 😂

I might have a look at olive carpets

There’s loads of colour in my house - wallpaper, paintings and furniture are all lively - I can manage one dull room 😂

That’s a lovely colour!! @Procrastatron
Sample duly ordered!

What about something like this has a flash of bold colour but practical too

I can’t believe someone suggested burgundy! Truly horrific colour. 😂 and way too dark. I would keep it soft and light with some kind of sisal.

I should have added that I have that exact carpet in a different colour. It have it in blue stone but to my eye it’s green toned of that is of interest too. Can’t photograph it as it inexplicably photographs as grey. It’s one of those velvet effect carpets which isn’t to everyone’s taste mind. (But you can bleach it!)
WeIcomeToGilead · 03/06/2021 07:22

Purple? Brownish purple?!

I had a huge very sunny landing, it’s about 8mx4, so it can definitely cope with a darker carpet

I didn’t mean to add the pink there - even I know it looks awful 😂

I’d be tempted to go for an olive/neutral or grey/neutral stripe. Adds interest without creating colour challenges. I have cream/grey stripe on my stairs and landing but it’s a hard wearing carpet and has stood up to dog and child constant use.

WeIcomeToGilead · 03/06/2021 07:25

@Procrastatron

The bleaching is an epically attractive feature - I don’t want to live in fear of dripped tea or sick doggies 😂

Why not go for a neutral colour with a fleck? I’m getting my stairs and bedrooms carpeted in a stone colour fleck carpet, I think flecks don’t look so ‘in your face’ as plain carpets can? They also go with more colours if you decide to change your scheme.

WeIcomeToGilead · 03/06/2021 07:28

Yes I thought about stripes - I think they look lovely

But I want it down for ten years and can’t decide if it will date or not - bit that that matters much - we’re not moving !

Divebar2021 · 03/06/2021 07:31

Generally I would go for a neutral carpet with some flecks in so it’s not a flat colour. Stripes do look good on a stairs and along a corridor and landing though (although I wouldn’t bring them into a room) Crucial Trading do stripes I think.

We've recently done a statement(ish) carpet on the stairs and landing in an aqua chevron. It's my favourite thing in the house. It's quite light coloured but they did have other colours. It is toned in with a darker green/blue wall.

My parents have just lifted a bottle green carpet that has been down for 25 years and still looks pretty good. They have very light cream walls though. Any pattern would probably have been too much.

I'd probably go for a sisal/Hessian kind of look or maybe herringbone or chevron in beige and black like the photo. Bit of a statement but fairly neutral and shouldn't show up too much dirt.

You need to go to a carpet store. There are so many shades and colours. You'd be surprised how many variations there are in the 'neutral' group and how many colours/designs you can get.
Be careful of something like sisal, they can wear and get shiny and slippy in spots - particularly on stairs.

inappropriateraspberry · 03/06/2021 07:38

Oh, and take an off it if wallpaper with you if you can! It's surprising what will work when you actually put them together.

lozengeoflove · 03/06/2021 07:40

Hi OP. Here’s ours. I too wanted pink to start with but chose this instead and love it.

lozengeoflove · 03/06/2021 07:44

Hopefully with pic this time.

We have dark red carpet on our stairs and landings and in the downstairs den. But where the sun has come into the den window it's faded and is more of a pinky colour, so we'll be replacing it soon as the DS13 and DS10 use it most and it doesn't go with the dark blue/grey colour they chose for the walls!

Etinox · 03/06/2021 07:47

Here’s our 10 year old carpet with similar wallpaper on a very sunny stairs leading to landing. Last brushed a week ago, lots of traffic and dog. I’m very pleased with it.

Does it have to be carpet? I'm going to paint my stairs and karndean the landing. Carpet on stairs gets dirty so quickly (well, it does in our house!)

WeIcomeToGilead · 03/06/2021 08:31

@lozengeoflove - that’s really lovely! I can’t get a runner sadly as we have open risers or no backing to the steps

That’s why, @AuntieDolly, we really need carpet because we have a 1970s floating staircase so need something grippy on there!

@Etinox - that’s v nice - is that a rust red? Wool?

Thanks @WeIcomeToGilead
It’s wool. And like all colours changes in the light, I’d say raspberry. But not really bluey 🤷🏻‍♀️

If you fancy that sort of colour, I'd go for a maroon/plum that's not too dark, and is a bit on the greyish side, i.e., not very saturated (i.e, not bright, like a magenta, for instance, would be). That way you get a good depth of a positive rich colour, rather than House Agent Grey or Landlord Cream, but you won't end up with something too loud! Or a dusky sort of pink, if you can find one you like. I tend to prefer yellower pinks rather than bluer ones, they are warmer and softer.

dudsville · 03/06/2021 13:24

OP, you have already made great choices judging by that wall paper and the cool mirror, the edge of which we can only just see. Please don't go down the route of bland. Raspberry is a fabulous choice. I like the different patterns some posters have put up would be very pretty.
