I agree that going for tiles could make your kitchen look like a 50s pastiche rather than just 'inspired by'.
I looked at Marmoleum for an earlier reno and really liked it. I think it might have been the width problem that made me choose something else.

Flooring looking really good, runs off to Google lino. All a bit boring here waiting for builders final quotes.
The DIY kitchen note is useful. We can't order anything but it's useful to up my budget by £500 to cover the cost so thanks for the heads up. I have been saving money by buying in alot of bits second hand. So far I have a bath £10 bathroom sink £2 pedestal £10 , corner basin free . Tiles ( plain white metro) 6m2 for £18. I have been given an old hoover for the build so I can hide mine so that should save me a little towards the extra. I am going to justify a couple of splurge things on the fact we have saved elsewhere.

Slightlysurviving · 08/10/2019 13:12

When I say second hand. They are all in fact never used just not from a shop, and Mainly have sat in someone's garage for a year.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 08/10/2019 13:25

@Slightlysurviving some good bargains there!

Hello,
Just jumping into this thread have been a long time luker and have made copious notes to my ever extending wish list.
We are planning a 6x5.5 meter rear extension, knocking through compleatly downstairs to create a large living kitchen dinner with utilty and wc.
Drawings have been submitted for prior approval and once this has been agreed we then have to obtain SE calculations and Thames water build over agreement.
Have now reached the really scared stage looking for builders and seeing if we can actually afford what we I want.Having sleepless nights now god knows how I will be if we go ahead :))

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/10/2019 11:39

@notreallydumb Welcome! Just shove those boxes out of the way, wipe the dust off and sit down. I spent the six months waiting time reading the old extension threads and asking questions and learned so much

Just bought a £35 wet dry builders vacuum from Screwfix to protect my Sebo once the clean up starts.
And I LOVE my new floor!

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo
i would love your floor !!
DH wants engineered oak and black tile in kitchen area between island and units ....not convinced that it will work or look right....

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/10/2019 14:48

Engineered Oak one end and black tile the other end?
I'd be wary of black tile, it shows dirt nearly as much as white and it will suck the light out of the room.

Our porcelain tiles are actually nicer than the photo - the colour reproduction on my phone camera is rubbish so they are warmer toned than they look, not as grey. And we will be going for toning grout rather than contrast.
I wanted the same thing throughout, liked the look of wood but didn't want it in the kitchen which is why we ended up with wood effect porcelain

Oh my word I have found my people. Our 8-10 week extension project is on week 20 and still about another 2-3 weeks to go Angry

I’m so sick of it. We’ve been living in 1.5 rooms downstairs - now down to 1 while the kitchen worktops are replaced. I’m sick of the endless fucking questions from the builders, reasons why this, that and the other can’t be done the way we want it because they can’t be bothered or it would take a bit longer and I’m sick of the negotiations about wanting more money because it’s taken so long. Yes, it’s taking forever because you are world class fucking procrastinators AngryAngry

I currently have no idea how I’m going to feed my kids tonight because the builders have completely blocked off the kitchen with their saw horses - I haven’t even been able to make a cup of tea today - and now the fridge freezer has turned up because I couldn’t delay it any longer so I can’t even get into the tiny part of the kitchen that was previously accessible.

Ha ha ha ha postscript that you couldn’t make up. Delivery team cannot install. They make a separate call for installation team to come at a separate time. Wtf is the point of selling installation if it needs to be done separately - and you don’t tell the customer that.

notreallydumb · 09/10/2019 17:33

@palindromic
I feel your pain, and it worries the hell out of me and we are only at the beginning of this project. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for you.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo
I would love to have tiles right through , but as downstairs will be for all intents one large open space but zoned for sitting , dinning and cooking he worries that if we could not afford UFH it would be too cold.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/10/2019 19:46

After I had ordered 50m2 floor tiles (with a 3 week lead time) builder tells me tiler needs 51m2
Thankfully since we are doing a random pattern not staggered there is very little wastage and he hasn't actually broken a single tile when cutting.
He estimates he will have 1 tile left over....

OP posts:
notreallydumb · 09/10/2019 21:28

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo
Wow that's so lucky !!
DH has just come home and told me that he will be laid off at the end of the month .......we now need to have a serious discussion about proceeding with extension. As we are just at the planning stage he is saying carry on it will all work itself out in the wash I so hate his laid back attitude at time !!!!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/10/2019 21:41

@notreallydumb aw that's rubbish for you. I would say that even the smoothest run extension is stressful and do you need more stress at the moment? And of course, the financial implications are very important.

OP posts:
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 09/10/2019 21:44

We are tiling whole room right under the units so he's leaving the final row closest to the wall until he's finished the utility room. And if need be the final row might just have a random odd tile from Topps to fill in a gap!

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 09/10/2019 21:52

OMG @notreallydumb! That's bad news. I totally understand your frustration about hi laid backness. Has he a plan or something??? I wouldn't want to start a stressful build when being stressed by job hunting. At least you were only at planning. The planning permission is valid for 3 years so maybe just get to approval and wait and see?

I hope you managed to feed everyone @PalindromicUser. Your builders sound like they need a kick up the backsides!!! Ours were slow and messy but considerate of us needing to feed kids.

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo - your wood effect tiles are really good! I wanted wood effect but didn't want to clash with our hall wood floor. And well done on the ordering! New Dad could do with you on his team! We had a good 6 boxes of marble wall tiles and 3 of floor left! He has taken them (we were a fixed price build) to see if his wife fancies them LOL!

Our news is that we are officially done!! Week 18 of our 8 week build!
Now to get sign off from building control... I will still lurk if that's ok as I want to see these lovely rooms!

I have a lot of painting and cleaning to do. We haven't actually used our new patio as it's been monsoon rain almost from the day they finished it. Our garden is a mud pit. But to everyone still in the midst of it all, hang on in there!! There is an end to the dust!

PalindromicUser · 09/10/2019 21:57

@soakedat3 tell me about it. They got fed at McDonalds in the end.

chopc · 09/10/2019 22:30

Pictures please @soakedat3

Our claim to be on schedule (week 13 of 16 week build). Everything is next week though - some things eg Windows, other companies have delayed

lightlypoached · 10/10/2019 15:33

WE HAVE PLANNING! 🥂

After the saga of refused PD this is a relief. It came through 2 days ago so after a month of living in boxes we are back on. Builders meeting on Monday and I expect they will start the Monday after - hopefully sooner. If they start then and stick to plan (hahahahahahhaha) we will be done by January. I know, I'm deluded. Already fed up of living in semi chaos.

The kitchen is on hold in Germany and I've lost my mojo a bit. Did have a fab inspiration for the shelves that will run both sides of the 7m long room - reclaimed scaffold planks Grin . they will look awesome (smoothed down of course).

wonderful coming back on here to see everyone's progress. Will post kitchen CAD soon.

notreallydumb · 10/10/2019 15:50

@ lightlypoached congrats hope you can meet your deadline bet your excited to be on the verge of starting am jealous :)

@soakedat3 @WhereDoesThisToiletGo Spent half the night going through all of this with DH. Extension the only way that this can now be afforded is to either get a mortgage (currently don't have one ) or to look at what savings we can make on the build and use our savings.Either way we will continue and see what building quotes come through once we have all the drawings so have not given up hope yet.

notreallydumb · 10/10/2019 15:54

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo. agree with tiles running right up to walls under cabinets, SIL had mega issues with a dishwasher leaking which ruined a floor and brought the ceiling down in the flat below her, insurance man told her all would have been avoided by tilling right across the floor and leak would have been noticed sooner.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/10/2019 16:16

@notreallydumb I had similar with a dishwasher quietly leaking under the cabinets with the water contained by the lip of tiles laid to just under the plinth.
This water was running along the full L shape of the kitchen and draining into the garage via a pipework hole.

He did have exactly the right number of tiles with half a one left over, but I wanted a few spares in case of dropped items cracking a tile, so the last row under cabinets is a mismatch wood tile from Topps.

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 10/10/2019 16:17

@lightlypoached Yay for planning!

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 10/10/2019 20:58

:o that makes me want to go look under the kick plate now!

@notreallydumb that sounds sensible to get quotes and see what you're up against. Not sure we'd want to get until more debt if dh was unemployed though. Also, would you be able to get a mortgage? Some lenders need min length of time of employment. I know we had issues years ago getting all our proof together.

@lightlypoached, you'll need to keep thinking about new year with new space to keep you going. Check with your builder about feasibility of reclaimed scaffolding planks as shelves. They are pretty heavy! Can your walls hold them and how will they be mounted? I also loved the look but settled for fake ones as they were lighter so could go on a plasterboard wall and I got to have copper strap details on them.

Some pics as requested. Utility is still a dumping ground but already so handy with the drying area. Outside is alternatively a mud bath and swamp depending on if raining or just stopped raining. Sigh.

But we're glad we did. I really like how it joins with original house and the bay window is dh's favourite seat. Can't wait to sit there once garden back in bloom. Thanks to all who reassured me about that wobble!
