Has anyone done a flush threshold to the patio? Our builder isn’t keen due to damp proofing ... but all the sliding/ bifold door suppliers say it can be done

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/10/2019 06:30

@soakedat3 It's lovely to see the furnished project, being lived in and enjoyed. I bet choosing all those lovely copper accessories kept you going through the mess and chaos.
The 'messy' utility shows just how essential it is - all the mess in there and not in the kitchen!
Your house doesn't look that old - they've done a really good job with the matching brickwork. That is what will let ours down a bit - builder couldn't get exactly matching bricks or tiles so it will always look a bit "stuck on"

NotMaryWhitehouse · 11/10/2019 09:35

@wohmum we're having one (not 100% flush, but virtually).

Our builder is just putting the patio on an imperceptible slope away from the doors with a drain at the bottom.

I can't see what the damp course itself has to do with it...?

muchtodobutstopforcuddles · 11/10/2019 16:31

We have planning permission!!! Woohoo!!! It's only taken 2 years. Excited to join you guys. Although I'm gathering from this thread that the fun and games only really start now!

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 11/10/2019 16:44

@muchtodobutstopforcuddles
2 years? Did you get turned down several times or just not get round to it?

Well I was hoping to post some photos of my lovely tiled floor but it will have to wait until I've finished cleaning the grout haze off...
Expect to see the photos some time around Easter!

@soakedat3 that looks fab ! Thanks for the pics

muchtodobutstopforcuddles · 12/10/2019 03:11

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo unfortunately it isn't a straight forward plot and then we discovered some boundary issues. Not all completely resolved, but enough to get planning and the rest will be sorted in time, or once the solicitor has pulled their finger out!!

PalindromicUser · 12/10/2019 08:14

Well we have something approaching a functioning kitchen - in the nick of time because I have a birthday cake to make today. Thank god I decided not to host the birthday party here Hmm

Fridge freezer STILL not plumbed in, despite assurances, but at least the old one is still here in the meantime.

Kitchen table still covered in the contents of the cupboards so I’m currently eating breakfast at DD’s mini Ikea table and chairs Confused

I was feeling quite sad last night that you don’t get that lovely big reveal moment because you move back into the kitchen in dribs and drabs, as soon as you possibly can.

Worktops that caused us so much pain look amazing though.

lightlypoached · 12/10/2019 09:26

@soakedat3 we have solid brick walls down both sides so I'm hoping that will be ok. Where did you source your imitation ones from?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 12/10/2019 09:51

I understand what you mean, you get lots of mini reveals, but the Finished kitchen is always not quite finished when you start using it.
Out best mini reveal so far has been when they open up the sealed door from hall into knocked though kitchen. Before from the front door, all you could see through the open door was a wall behind which was the TV room. Now you see beyond that removed wall into the far corner of The World's Smallest Extension

@lightlypoached - I got them on Etsy. The fittings that came with them did not fit which was annoying so had to measure the hole and get another set. I need to remember not to over load them. Are you planning on doing the sanding down and painting yourself?

Picture of worktops please @PalindromicUser!

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo, get the vinegar spray in! But it is annoying that tiles looks good when stuck on and then so dirty after grouting! Can't wait to see a photo. Worth the debates with builder and the wait?

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 12/10/2019 20:23

I've washed the floor 3 times and it's still dreadful. This afternoon Husband and I spent about 4 hours today cleaning one tile at a time with a non scratch scourer, then wiping it clean with a wet wipe, a fresh one for every tile so I'm not using dirty liquid
It's better than it was but still not right.

We've only done a third of the floor!

OP posts:
soakedat3 · 12/10/2019 20:37

Yup, I remember doing each tile one at a time. It's the only way. I still have a corner of about 8 tiles to do in the utility but it's still too messy to do properly.

northernruth · 13/10/2019 09:12

@slightlysurviving have you looked at rubber or coloured vinyl flooring? Or the linoleum like we are planning. It's not that expensive, soft underfoot and stuff doesn't break if you drop it!

northernruth · 13/10/2019 09:23

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo the tiles sound like a pain - we have grey concrete effect in the daughter's bathroom (the only room that's finished) and they are a pain to clean. Tiler says once the extension is done and there's less muck in the house we should be able to get them to stay relatively nice!!

We are starting to see light at the end of the tunnel althoguh it's like pulling teeth. Electric and gas meters were moved this week, and we have a temporary supply to our consumer board but no power to half of the house (the new bit basically). we were wanting to move into the new living room before we knock through front to back (we are living in the dining room which is at the front of the house) but we might have to suck it up and just eat out for a week!

Fireplace arrives monday and the woodburner arrives on Tuesday. I've just ordered tiles for the inside of the fireplace. I found a company that would do me an internal French door between the kitchen and the dining room but they are taking an age to give me a quote and I think I will just order two 30" doors to just get the job done. Now the meters are moved we will get the utility room finished next week and the kitchen is due to be delivered mid November but I'll go in this week to finalise so hope they can do earlier, we'll see.

My joiner (not the builder's lads) is coming on Monday to quote for fitting the kitchen and he's coming the week after to put some cupboard doors on my massive linen cupboard and water cylinder cupboard upstairs. John Lewis come on Wednesday to price up carpets (they had a 20% off promotion, my gut feel is that the local shop will still be cheaper!) and the lino guys are here on Tuesday. I had a garden designer here last week and expect designs from her later this week

Oh and my joiners say that the join in Linoleum is really fine and hard to see so I'm going to get the number of another fitter off the Farbo website and get a second opinion!

So it's all coming together

MyNameIsJane · 13/10/2019 09:32

@WhereDoesThisToiletGo will those magic sponges work quicker?

Slightlysurviving · 13/10/2019 10:19

So we narrowed down our builders to two both we trust and one has done work for us before. Looks like we won't start until Feb at the earliest. This is sensible we have 2 under 4 and it's a massive project but I feel really low about it. Its just so slow. And we are still living in a crappy house that we havent sorted since we moved in as it will be knocked down. Thanks @northenrun I will check it out.

Slightlysurviving · 13/10/2019 10:22

@wheredoesthistoiletgo my mum swears by a drop of lemon juice in water to get rid of haze. But not sure I believe her. it's looking fabulous loving the proportions of the room @soaked

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 13/10/2019 12:48

You know when the Love of your Life does something stupid (like forget your birthday or sleep with your sister) and you forgive them because you love them but it's never the same again?

That's how I feel about these bloody tiles

OP posts:
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 13/10/2019 12:53

@Slightlysurviving I think the grout haze is so resistant because it's a flexible waterproof one, rather than just plain cement.

OP posts:
WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 13/10/2019 12:57

Cleaned bit by the French windows. It's also been cleaned in the behind bit out of shot.
If I'd known it was going to invlove this much work I would have booked professional cleaners to come in over the weekend

Hard task well done though, @wheredoesthistoiletgo

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 13/10/2019 15:48

It looks lovely when it's wet, I might just resign myself to washing the kitchen floor 4 times a day to obtain the look I want.!
They are porcelain tiles so don't need a sealant but they might end up getting some sort of surface treatment.
