Anyone out there also prepping?

is the Saturday morning school an issue at all for WUS?

If your son represents the school in the first football (top 7), cricket (top 7) or chess teams (top 5) then you will get a few conflicts a year but not many.

From Y4 except chess where you could be in U9 in Y3.

2minutesplease · 20/01/2023 21:06

@elij Would you mind if I ask you about chess provision at WUS, especially in Y3-Y4? Do they play tournaments at school, with other schools, how many U9 teams the school has?

WUS are reigning U9 and U11 champions in EPSCA NPSCC.

There is a weekly after school club (like all preps overseen by a GM) and regular inter year tournaments which most kids play during lunch.

Sorry last year there was only 1 U9 and 1 U11 team. They have strength in depth for 2 but haven't heard about an A and B this year (first round is in 2 weeks)

2minutesplease · 20/01/2023 21:19

Thank you so much for your response @elij! Do they have chess “fixtures” with other schools outside EPSCA like swimming galas, football fixtures?Just wonder if U9 school teams play between each other in these type of schools.

No, only 1 team chess event a year -- a lot of kids represent WUS at other events but this isn't through the school.

All fixtures excluding chess are on the public sports site.

WUS is performing better this year in swimming (vs historically) and doing more gala rounds in the 2 major events.

Thanks again @elij! My son is at KCJS so probably I’ll see you at the gala next Monday! ;)

IAPS isn't allowing parents like London League :(

But our sons will meet :)

Thank you for the information. @elij @Catchme my DS is not super sporty, he loves chess, maths, coding and video games and is a very avid reader. He plays piano, but is not super into music. But I felt if I push him he can still make progress to take abrsm exams. Currently leaning towards WUS, hoping I won’t be making the wrong choice of school for him.

Wxluuu · 23/01/2023 10:35

We will be giving up our WUS place and choose SPJ. Good luck to families on the WL.

@hhggmum our DS is also not super sporty though he likes having a go, and loves all the things you mentioned, video games, chess, coding, maths, reading, lego, Pokemon... he enjoys music and plays the violin. I feel our DS will be happy at either honestly, though SPJ feels more modern in their ethos and general ways in our experience. Plus we are in west London so SPJ is a better commute.

holiday12345 · 23/01/2023 13:36

We have also accepted the 7+ offer from WUS. PM me if you would like to join the whatsapp group :)

HisfirstwordMummy · 23/01/2023 15:46

Dear All

Firstly thank you for all the support and help on this forum.

We had offers from SPJS and KCJS (did not sit WUS for logistical reasons).

We have accepted the place at SPJS and informed KCJS that we are withdrawing who requested we email them. This is a heads-up for anyone on the KCJS reserve list as we will be emailing them today.

We look forward to meeting those at SPJS and wish everyone else the best for your DS’s future endeavours.

I know this can be a very stressful and difficult time for anyone starting the 7+/8+ journey and I am more than happy to share details of a very experienced tutor that anyone needs (DM me).

All the best and take care!

Good Evening,

Well done for all the boys for trying so hard with their 7+ exams this year, it’s been very tough and they have all done so well regardless of outcome.

congratulations to all that have received offers from WUS. We also have an offer from WUS and SPJ; like many of you, we now need to decide which school will be more suitable for our DS, all opinions will be appreciated.

My friend’s DS has been placed on the WUS Reserve List, any idea how many boys are on the RL? Thank you. X

I think a new consideration for WUS is that they have imminent plans to go co-ed, accepting girls at both 4+ and 7+ (and I assume 8+), as well as starting Reception class. It will totally change the culture of the school, whether good or bad too early to tell. The decision will then be whether to go for a known, tried and true product or risk a new flavour that you may end up not liking.

Candyfloss2 · 25/01/2023 11:54

We just got feedback from kings .
third quartile what does it mean?
english he failed at listening 38%.

math 65% .

holiday12345 · 25/01/2023 12:03

That means he’s between 50%~75% on average

we've looked into this extensively both by speaking to the deputy head and many friends at the senior school and it looks like co-ed is a possibility but not in the near future and will most certainly not affect the incoming boys this year. it seems like they will need to do a lot of fund raising and it still needs to pass final approval (which it hasn't).

njshore · 25/01/2023 15:32

It will certainly happen before this year's intake leaves at end of Year 8, 6 years from Sep 2023. It's pretty much a done deal based on a letter sent out by the Board of Governors last spring. I was told they already bought the building last summer. Whether they are trying to assuage parental fear by playing it down is another matter.

NameChangeDays · 25/01/2023 17:26

@njshore any word when the first WUS intake at 4+ might be?

Candyfloss2 · 25/01/2023 17:32

School said if total 125 he will be in interview . so we lack of another 22 marks . 65+ 38%

NameChangeDays · 25/01/2023 17:26

Chapter Street site still has tenants, it hasn't had it's designation reclassified or the building converted.

At this point it is basically an investment and I don't believe any new parents should be factoring it in.

The letter discussed here to me read as saying everything being gossiped is possible rather then a specific plan (to avoid showing cards).

Co-ed without Y9 provisions at the greater school is a bit odd. I suspect in the next decade they will expand entry for boys and continue the attack on traditional schools like Sussex house (as GHS has) to fend off dukes.

JHB23 · 26/01/2023 13:43

Hi All,

We have accepted SPJS offer today and declined WUS and KCJS. Good luck to those all on the Reserve List, do share if you are successful.

Xihou0329 · 27/01/2023 08:31

Hey we have also recently accepted SPJS and turned down WUS. Best luck to everyone on their reserve list x

cheerios15 · 27/01/2023 09:33

We've accepted SPJ too. Is there already a WhatsApp group for those starting this September? DM if you would like to be added, I can start one! :)

Myboys12345 · 30/01/2023 22:56
