3+ 4+ 5+ 7+ Support thread 2019

In previous years I have started these threads to help and support all those involved in the independent school admissions process.

I wasn't going to start one this year as I know I would not be able to check back on it as regularly as I would like, which then defeats the purpose of the thread.

However, after numerous positive PM's about the threads I think it would be a shame not to start one where at least the hand holding can continue. 🤝

There are many many people who have been through the process and 'live to tell the tale' . There are also other tutors I know who read this thread and it would be great if you all could help and support and share your ideas👏🏼

(Roll on 2019!) 😉

Is anyone holding a Channing offer and another school? I noticed that the Channing offer says that they may withdraw it before you accept if they get enough acceptances. I have heard this happening at 11+ but this was for a 4+ offer.

lonmum1234 · 30/01/2019 22:47

I have heard it for a a few other schools clgs and ncls. The others don't unless it specifically says on your offer letter

Alwayspinkshoes · 30/01/2019 23:10

i can understand where you have two offers, this working but if you are holding an offer and on a waitlist for your preferred school, it puts pressure on you to accept. As I said, I have heard it was done at 11+ but didn’t realize it was now done at 4+.

So depressed-just phoned the school and it’s looking unlikely that they are going to waitlist 😭

Stressedmum2019 · 31/01/2019 10:30

What school is that for? It’s such a horrible situation

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 10:42

I guess the WL situation is different as advised for CC/WUS as they know so much ahead...will have to try again next year...this is so hard, thank you to everyone who’s been kind enough to reply to my posts xxx

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 10:43

WUS

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 10:44

It was just the mixed messages from the school-telling us to keep in touch, but probably knowing it was so unlikely-but guess that’s how it goes

lonmum1234 · 31/01/2019 10:46

I really feel for you... We are in the same limbo. Does anyone have any updates for ncls. Feel like I'll be a pest if I keep calling and was thinking to leave it til next week

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 11:06

Thank you, it’s a very lonely place to be...an outright no from the outset is in someways easier to deal with. I would just phone I didn’t and I’m not sure that was the right way to go, because one mum that phoned daily got a place, and I don’t know if I had done the same I could have changed the outcome

Stressedmum2019 · 31/01/2019 11:30

Anyone in this thread from Hampstead hull school

skal · 31/01/2019 11:45

@wishthiswasmorefun - Trust me, an outright no is not easy either. Our DS passed the written at WUS, was called back at interview and didn't get an offer. DS came back and gave a detailed account - I couldn't pinpoint exactly what went wrong. As parents, it is very hard for us, especially after our DSs have worked so hard and missed the best school in the country by just an inch. I still get sleepless nights but have accepted now that it was sheer bad luck.

I hope you and your DS are able to come out of it quickly and move on. Onwards and upwards is the only way forward.

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 11:49

Thank you Skal, you’re right, it’s never going to be easy, we love them so much, and seeing them fall after they work so hard is heartbreaking. I just don’t know where to go from here...

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 11:52

And so much is down to luck...

organiccoffee · 31/01/2019 12:34

@wishthiswasmorefun did you mean there's WUS 7+ wl boy received offer after repeated call? I don't really think phoning daily would matter a lot for schools like wus. But I heard from friend that wus over offered this year, that might be the reason they are not going to the wl.

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 12:40

Thank you for your words of comfort @litan8, it’s all about the children at the end of the day, am so glad your DD did well, hopefully your DS will get the school he wants too! It’s only difficult when the prep school seem so certain and you put all your eggs in one basket...it sounds crazy in retrospect but everyone advised the same thing! Ah well, 8+ it is then!

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 12:42

Hi @organiccoffee, I can only imagine you’re right about over offering-but one mum I know definitely got a place from WL, she called everyday and was offered on Monday. Her DS was probably right at the top, but it was definitely from WL

organiccoffee · 31/01/2019 12:57

@wishthiswasmorefun
Are all the places confirmed now? I know a number of boys who didn't get it last year received multiple offers in 8+ this year. Especially when you are on the wl, it is just so close. But I know it's a tough year for the parents. Keep calm and carry on.

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 13:01

@organiccoffee, I wish I knew, apparently the head was calling parents last night to confirm-so am guessing yes. I called this morning as I was going not so slowly nuts-and the admissions lady just said it was unlikely they were going to WL, so that’s that

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 13:20

@organiccoffee-would you know which schools do 8+? Thanks so much

organiccoffee · 31/01/2019 13:26

8+, wus, spj, kcs, Sussex house, wetherby are the popular destinations.

wishthiswasmorefun · 31/01/2019 13:30

Thank you, honestly, I feel so naive about the whole thing now...just waiting for the dreaded call telling me the dream is over, so grateful for your insights @organiccoffee xxx

organiccoffee · 31/01/2019 14:01

@wishthiswasmorefun
No problem. Having gone through this process myself before,I know how it feels. Hope you will get good news soon!
