Son's friend says his daddy has a gun

So what do you do when a 5 year old says that to you?

Options:

  1. 101 report as it's not an emergency now
  2. Discuss with school
  3. Crimestoppers report anonymously
  4. Keep your nose out of it

Background info: parents of the child are constantly stoned doleys. Likelihood of truth in this are raised a little tiny bit above zero by being full-time dopeheads yet there is no evidence whatsoever of income beyond benefits; dealers are usually stupid and spend their money in visible ways. Coke, smack etc then yes guns tend to go with the high value territory but weed and guns don't really mix in reality.

Loads of people have guns. It doesnt make them murderers.
Keep out of it.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2015 16:01

If do nothing

It's perfectly legal to own a registered weapon, it may be a rifle or a BB gun.

Unless you think their proper Crims? In which case I would call the police

PureMorning · 23/03/2015 16:03

My son tells people his dad works in a deli

Hes a plumber.

Kids say all sorts of weird things.

Might be a toy or a bb gun

being on benefits don't make you a gun toting nutter

Fatstacks · 23/03/2015 16:04

We have guns at home.
Locked away but perfectly legal.
We aren't on benefits though, guns + benefits = blatant mudercrimedealers
Biscuit

Feckeggblue · 23/03/2015 16:06

I wouldn't do anything, people can have guns. Doesn't make them drug barons or criminals Shock

Call 101. Honestly Hmm

malefridgeblindness · 23/03/2015 16:11

You lost me at the word "doley, hun. Are you new here?

titchy · 23/03/2015 16:13

I'd go option 2. School more than likely has more experience of this child and what he says, and of the family in general and are a better judge.

bloodyteenagers · 23/03/2015 16:13

Not all dealers are stupid and spend money in visible ways. Just saying.
Not everyone on the dole smokes weed, owns guns and are criminals.
People on benefits can own guns.

I have several. I have a couple of nerf guns, water guns, a bb one and a lighter one. The youngest will ask his mates if they wanna come and play with the guns. He means the nerf of the water ones. Even owned these when I was a doley.

flanjabelle · 23/03/2015 16:15

I am surprised at the attitude on here. Why own a gun (obviously apart from hunting etc) if you aren't dodgy as fuck??

Yes the kid might be lying or bending the truth, but I would rather let the police know and let them check if its true/legal etc.

Since when is it ok to own a gun??

Feckeggblue · 23/03/2015 16:18

I don't like guns but it's not unusual to own one legally flanjabelle- I don't understand why you think it's dodgy/ never been ok?

sliceofsoup · 23/03/2015 16:20

My dad has a gun. Confused

MadameJulienBaptiste · 23/03/2015 16:21

We know several people with guns. One of them takes their 12 yr old son shooting.
its no big deal.

malefridgeblindness · 23/03/2015 16:22

Ah but sliceofsoup is he a doley? Better ring 101 to be on the safe side.

Fatstacks · 23/03/2015 16:22

I rarely find the energy to be dodgy but I can shoot.
Our guns belong to my DP and he is the polar opposite of dodgy.

I didn't realise that it was a prerequisite to be dodgy as fuck.
I'd better hold up the post office or something.

Polyethyl · 23/03/2015 16:23

My family have an air pistol, an air rifle and a 18th century antique hand gun. All of which are perfectly legal. But which a 5yo would describe as a gun.

atticusclaw · 23/03/2015 16:23

We don't have a gun but loads of people around here do. None of them are dodgy, most of them are landowners.

There are more than 2 million registered guns in this country. I don't think the police would appreciate 101 calls on all those gun owners.

Feckeggblue · 23/03/2015 16:26

Don't worry everyone, I have called 101 about slice of soups dad.
They said they are a bit busy dealing with all the other mumsnet calls (apparently someone has had a car parked outside their house for 2 days they don't recognise and another has been told
To fuck off by her neighbour) but will call me back

sliceofsoup · 23/03/2015 16:27

WTF is a doley? Someone on the dole? Never heard that before, its getting worse.

No my dad isn't a doley, unless you count the two weeks he claimed back in 1988.

sliceofsoup · 23/03/2015 16:28

My dad is a dodgy dancer, but that is about it. :o

Feckeggblue · 23/03/2015 16:30

Let the police decide that, soup Wink

enderwoman · 23/03/2015 16:32

We own the following guns:
Nerf, water, nail, glue and a gun shaped alarm clock where you pull the trigger and it projects the time.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 23/03/2015 16:34

My son's friend at primary school told everyone his Dad was an astronaut. This surprised me as the last time I had seen his Dad he was cutting and styling my hair!

My friend's husband has a gun and it is only because I know him very well that I also know he has a gun licence and keeps the gun in a safe with the bullets stored in a separate locked safe. No doubt his kids have gone into school and told their classmates that their dad has a gun - I'm not aware that anyone has called the police!

JoeBongo · 23/03/2015 16:34

Ok, inform school is what I'm hearing.

Doley = ne'er-do-well who is a professional benefits claimant with no apparent intention of ever paying into the system.

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 23/03/2015 16:36

I raise you - DS has a spud gun Grin (Yes, they still make them)

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 23/03/2015 16:38

People who belong to gun clubs own guns. All registered and perfectly legal.

We have a friend who shoots pheasants - owns a gun, locked up when not in use, all registered and perfectly legal.

Many farmers own guns ............ etc, etc.
