Son's friend says his daddy has a gun

So what do you do when a 5 year old says that to you?

Options:

  1. 101 report as it's not an emergency now
  2. Discuss with school
  3. Crimestoppers report anonymously
  4. Keep your nose out of it

Background info: parents of the child are constantly stoned doleys. Likelihood of truth in this are raised a little tiny bit above zero by being full-time dopeheads yet there is no evidence whatsoever of income beyond benefits; dealers are usually stupid and spend their money in visible ways. Coke, smack etc then yes guns tend to go with the high value territory but weed and guns don't really mix in reality.

Loads of people own guns legally. I grew up with guns in the house. What do you think gun shops sell?

Stoned people and guns don't strike me is a particularly lethal combination. Alcohol maybe.

My 6 year old tells people I am making the new Star Wars Movie. (I'm not)

Do you have a more specific concern about the little boy's well being?

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 24/03/2015 21:46

Or pieces of clay Clara

NigellasGuest · 24/03/2015 21:51

perhaps it's a splodge gun?

ClashCityRocker · 24/03/2015 21:58

My dad's guns bigger than your dads gun.

When I was at school, I told everyone my dad played for Manchester united.

I actually believed it.

Fatstacks · 25/03/2015 06:14

Clara you aren't obliged to shoot animals if you have a gun, it isn't part of the licensing Hmm

vegplotter · 25/03/2015 07:04

When I was at school.i told everyone my dad was Shaken Stevens.

I don't have a gun. /Cobain.

claraschu · 25/03/2015 07:17

I am aware of that, Fatstacks.

Lots of people taking about pheasants-

I hate guns, and I have the feeling that people who walk around brandishing them (and teaching their kids to do the same) really want to kill something. Maybe I am wrong, but I live in the country, and the people with guns around here are not my favourites.

abyssiniam8 · 25/03/2015 07:20

We have a pellet gun. I wont say what we use it for otherwise i will get flamed...

Ds also has knives which are kept in the house. He uses them as he is black belt in martial arts.

If i still had a 5 year old, I think its possible that news may get around that I am really Mrs Norris.

eurochick · 25/03/2015 07:29

I shoot. Clays and targets. I've never shot a living thing (although a few birds with death wishes who like hanging out on the firing range have come close).

BombayBaloon · 25/03/2015 07:29

A teenage student once told me he had found a gun on the school field. I of course got straight into SLT, who thought it was hilarious that is had been duped by this tricky teen, but sent someone out to look, and lo and behold, a loaded gun.

MinceSpy · 25/03/2015 07:29

Ok inform the school is what I'm heating

Really? No one has said this.

mousmous · 25/03/2015 07:43

I have a nailgun. does that count?

SilverBirch2015 · 25/03/2015 18:45

I know I live in the Home Counties, but I initially read "Doley" as "Doiley", and thought it was some drug using eupemism.

Do people really use this term for people living on benefits?

I need to get out more ...

SilverBirch2015 · 25/03/2015 18:47

Btw, We have a air gun, it is a more humane way than using warfarin to deal with rats in the garden.

HoneySwampDragonInMourning · 25/03/2015 18:53

Small dc say all sorts

Ds went to school and told them that daddy keeps a rocket launcher in his office.

His Daddy doesn't keep it in his office at all

(On account we were only borrowing it Wink)

His bff used to insist his Dad worked at Disneyworld ....an impressive commute considering Dad was often back to do the school run.

ChoudeBruxelles · 25/03/2015 18:55

Ds has told people his dad has guns. He has air rifles which he goes shooting rabbits with.

NorahDentressangle · 25/03/2015 19:02

Call 101 OP, say you have no evidence that there is a gun but would rather err on the side of caution.

Surely everyone knows that Year 1 teachers could hold half the class' parents to ransom.

Can't believe all the twattish talk on this thread.

tobysmum77 · 26/03/2015 07:16

In the context of the op call 101. Living in a rural area personally I wouldn't turn a hair if dd came home with that story - I know lots of people who own guns.

NorahDentressangle · 26/03/2015 08:42

The police can check easily to see if the gun is licensed or not. If not then at least if there is an incident at the home (more likely than most if both drug takers) then at least they are informed when they visit which might mean the residents or police are less likely to get shot!

My dH has many guns all above board, visited by police to check storage conditions etc.

AChickenCalledKorma · 26/03/2015 09:18

OP - If you are genuinely worried, because you know the family well enough to feel that there is a real possibility of an illegal weapon and people being put at risk, then please call 101 and ask for advice. Sometime instincts are worth following.

If, however, there might be a perfectly reasonable explanation, or it might be a 5 year old's misunderstanding, then do nothing.

And for the record, my 12 year old daughter regularly shoots a gun. She is a Scout and they have an air rifle shooting team. I expect the Scout leader's five year old son would say his daddy has a gun.

GinAndSonic · 26/03/2015 09:23

My 5 yo says his dad has been eaten by a dinosaur. i fucking wish

HellKitty · 26/03/2015 09:33

We have 4 guns. Deactivated ww2 Mausers. We also have a spud gun. Not deactivated.

My DCs went to a Warldorf type nursery school, the toys were all gender neutral and 'friendly'. Every playtime the kids would pick up sticks and ''shoot" each other much to the teachers disappointment.

Unless you know for sure then I'd assume it's a case of 'my dad' bragging.

shrunkenhead · 05/04/2015 09:19

My dad has a gun, he shoots pheasants, rabbits, ducks etc with it. Has license and locked in attic. He isn't a doley though..

Yarp · 07/04/2015 07:19

I guess it very much depends where you live.

If a child round here said their dad had a gun, I'd believe it, and be concerned.

Not many rabbits here

Trapper · 07/04/2015 07:30

If love to know what the School would do - aren't they supposed to be - teaching?
Call crime stoppers if you are concerned that they may have an illegal gun in their house. If it is illegal then the normal controls are probably not in place (gun safe, separate ammo etc.) putting the child at risk.
