So what do you do when a 5 year old says that to you?

Options:

  1. 101 report as it's not an emergency now
  2. Discuss with school
  3. Crimestoppers report anonymously
  4. Keep your nose out of it

Background info: parents of the child are constantly stoned doleys. Likelihood of truth in this are raised a little tiny bit above zero by being full-time dopeheads yet there is no evidence whatsoever of income beyond benefits; dealers are usually stupid and spend their money in visible ways. Coke, smack etc then yes guns tend to go with the high value territory but weed and guns don't really mix in reality.

How are you hearing that, lol

FlabbyMummy · 23/03/2015 16:40

My Step Father has various Shot Guns at home, all kept legally.

Could this be the case? if you are concerned that there is an unlicensed firearm in the property then you can report to 101.

atticusclaw · 23/03/2015 16:42

WTF - how are you hearing "inform school?" Confused

KittyandTeal · 23/03/2015 16:44
  1. Assume at 5yo he's telling a little fib to impress friends.

I've taught tonnes of 5yos, if I took every thing they told me seriously I'd spent a lot of time worrying and reporting.

I wouldn't worry, however, if you think he is regularly around drugs then that's worth reporting, although I'd talk to the school first. I imagine they are well aware and have something in place.

mousmous · 23/03/2015 16:45

a school friend of dc told the class that he lives in a castle and his father is king of england...

NoPowerInTheVerseCanStopMe · 23/03/2015 16:47

One of my best friends (teacher, father, very involved with his local church) has a couple of guns and several swords. He's a historical reenactor and a fencer.

There are plenty of legitimate reasons for someone to keep guns.

binspin · 23/03/2015 16:48

You 'know' an AWFUL lot about these people.

Oh sorry, you've assumed an awful lot about them.

Call MI5 obviously.

I'm assuming you're not in a rural location?

Eva50 · 23/03/2015 16:51

Dh has 4 guns and takes ds2 shooting with him. Ds2 did a talk on it in school (although didn't take his gun for show and tell). They both have cups and trophys and we have venison and goose in the freezer. I better warn ds3 not to mention it in school in case we get the police at the door.

sliceofsoup · 23/03/2015 16:57

Where did inform school jump out at you from?

Doley = ne'er-do-well who is a professional benefits claimant with no apparent intention of ever paying into the system.

And you know this how?

mrz · 23/03/2015 16:58

I once had a 4 year old bring in his shotgun for show and tell in reception (with gun licence and a brace of rabbits)

00100001 · 23/03/2015 16:59

Ok, inform school is what I'm hearing.

nooo, they're mostly saying, do nothing.

funambulist · 23/03/2015 17:10

To be honest I think I'd be a bit taken aback if a child told me their dad had a gun. I guess that there are a few possibilities:

Dad is a farmer/farm worker etc
Dad is interested in shooting as a sport
Child is telling stories
Dad has BB or similar
Dad is mixed with gang culture, drugs, crime and has an actual gun at his house.

I guess the OP may well be able to discount some of the possibilities from her knowledge of the family.

If it were me I would try and see if I could find out a bit more from the child. Eg "Why does your dad have a gun ?" "What does he use it for?" "Where does he keep it?" And then decide what to do based on the answers.

CheerfulYank · 23/03/2015 17:14

I'd assume nothing about it.but then I'm American and y'all know we all have guns. :o

Didn't only one person in two pages say to inform the school? Hmm

LoofahVanDross · 23/03/2015 19:20

Inform the school???? They will think you are deranged.

Esko · 23/03/2015 19:30

Some years ago we lived in a second floor flat. My daughter was 1 and my mum was looking after her. There was a ring on the bell ' delivery' someone said - she made her way downstairs. A load of armed blokes streamed through the downstairs front door screaming at her to get out of the way. She ran back into our flat and called the police - after a few minutes on the phone she was told it was they who were carrying out a raid and to keep away from the windows. She sat there terrified clutching my dd.My neighbour whose flat they raided was not a criminal but had a cigarette lighter shaped like a gun - a concerned neighbour or passer by had mistaken it for a real gun and called the police.
OP - beware of what you unleash.

HungryNearWestPier · 23/03/2015 19:40

I have an overwhelming urge to post this...

Agree with most others - just because a 5yo says their dad has a gun, it doesn't mean that their dad has an actual gun.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 23/03/2015 21:35

When DS was about 5 he would tell people that DH was the fastest runner in the world and could jump over buildings. Surprisingly, that isn't actually true.

MTWTFSS · 24/03/2015 20:16

I'd do nothing. Kids say so many crazy things.

My DS (4) tells people that his daddy gets paid to shout at people and eat bamboo.

Ladyflip · 24/03/2015 20:26

We have 3 shotguns, an air rifle and a .410. The .410 is notionally DS' gun although it is held under DH's licence. DS will be 8 next week. He is learning gun safety and how to shoot. I'm sure he tells his mates at school that he has his own gun. Most of them probably think he means a nerf gun.

"Doleys" though? Hmm

I can't wait til the headmistress corners me about this. Perhaps I'll offer her an afternoon with the clay trap.

GingerCuddleMonster · 24/03/2015 20:36

please for the love of God don't base your judgment on what a 5year old says.

it's probably harmless...honestly.

My 3yo nephew announced to his nursery that his aunty(me) was a pole dancer Grin I'm not, nobody needs to see me. swinging round a pile half dressed and they definitely won't pay for it. We still to this day have no idea where he got this from he's 3!

mooth · 24/03/2015 20:42

My husband owns a gun, too. He uses it to shoot pheasants. He's not a 'Doley' though, I don't think, so I'm not scared.

MoreBeta · 24/03/2015 20:49

My DS2 told his Yr 1 Class that I am an inventor and a Dr and that he didn't know how I found time for doing everything and looking after him all the time.

He also told them I worked on the designing the space shuttle.

I was SAHD at the time and not working.

I do also have a gun but he didn't tell them that. Grin

SeaUnicorns · 24/03/2015 21:35

One person said infirm the school everyone else went er what.

The previous poster who asked since when was it ok to own a gun well er since it was a totally legal thing to do? As for apart from hunting why would you own a gun, er sport, some one will correct me I'm sure but weren't some of the GB gold medals at the London Olympics for shooting, for which you kind of need a gun.
Things that are used for softball, paintball etc would be described as guns.

How do you know that their "doleys" out ward apparences wow, your judging them.

But sure inform the school, either the school will already have concerns, or they'll have the same attitude as every one else on here and go why would we listen to a judgemental mother who has no idea of the families ciricamstances and think your slightly bonkers.

glittertits · 24/03/2015 21:37

My dad has a sword misses point

claraschu · 24/03/2015 21:44

Wow, lots of people on here who like killing animals, or are married to people who like killing animals.
