Good sized market town;
Nice countryside but near large town/city;
Excellent primary schools, stretching;
Some choice of private schools;
Able to walk to school instead of drive;
Pretty town, aesthetically pleasing;
Refined feel to the area;
1 and a half hours commute to London.

Can anyone help me name this town? Or does it not exist? Thank you!

RubyGates · 09/06/2012 12:09

Walden even.

Petersfield? (55 mins to W'loo)
Winchester ? (60 mins)
Alresford? (can't remember!)
Farnham?

Really depends which bit of London you're aiming for, but I much, much prefer South West of London to the North.

I know it. Erehwon. Brilliant place.

I'm from the Stroud area and currently live near Oakham, Rutland and would choose Stamford, Oakham,Uppingham over the Stroud area every time.

Houses round here are cheaper, the area is much nicer. Stamford and Oakham have much more going for them than Stroud,OK they don't have a cinema but at least the shops aren't empty and they aren't grotty and depressing.

WRT schools, DS1 got all As and A*s at GCSE last year. All the primary schools in Rutland are excellent and there are 3 secondary schools which are acadamies, I know 2, maybe all 3, are rated as outstanding by OFSTED.

I love Rutland, just incase you couldn't tell!Wink

the schools in Erewhon are all outstanding

Lymington (Brockenhurst is 90 mins to Waterloo, 15 min drive away)

BeckyBendyLegs · 09/06/2012 12:36

Ha ha I live in Shrewsbury. It could be.

BeckyBendyLegs · 09/06/2012 12:36

It takes a lot longer than 1 1/2 hours to get to London though...

Pantah630 · 09/06/2012 12:37

Seconding Lymington, gorgeous Georgian town with harbour one side and New Forest the other.

BeckyBendyLegs · 09/06/2012 12:39

My vote would be for somewhere like Woodstock or Thame. I used to live in Oxfordshire and it was lovely there.

TalkinPeace2 · 09/06/2012 16:50

Winchester
Romsey
Ringwood
Lymington
Salisbury

Moodykat · 09/06/2012 17:01

Lymington is lovely (really really lovely). There are also trains that go from the town station to brockenhurst if no driving at all is required.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 09/06/2012 17:05

ooh Jux you are a tinker Wink

Meglet · 09/06/2012 17:11

Haven't read it all but I'd say Winchester. My stepdad commutes to London from there.

MaggieMcVitie · 09/06/2012 17:16

Chichester? Or Midhurst?

GitAwfMayLend · 09/06/2012 17:17

Wroughton - it isn't a market town but is a village midway between Swindon and Marlborough, with Cirencester and Bath a stones throw away.

Very good local schools at both primary and secondary level. Hour to London on the train from Swindon (train every 15 mins) or hour and half drive. Private schools locally.

ProfessorSunny · 09/06/2012 17:20

This is my town to a T but I am reluctant to name it sorry ! Lovely living here though :)

Pochemuchka · 09/06/2012 17:25

Was going to say Ilkley but you're looking at 2 1/2 hours commute!

southernbelle77 · 09/06/2012 18:30

Horsham, West Sussex

PrettyPrinceofParties · 09/06/2012 18:32

Stoney Stratford's awesome too. It's where the phrase cock and bull story originates from (2 pubs next to each other, the Cock and The Bull, travellers on Watling Street, Old A5 and main route to London, would stop off here and tell stories that would get more and more exaggerated as they alternated between the 2 pubs) and the Withnail and I holiday bit was filmed there, different pub tho, where Richard E Grant voms on that blokes shoes.

Do I get a prize for longest sentence on mumsnet? Sorry about that. Blush
