Good sized market town;
Nice countryside but near large town/city;
Excellent primary schools, stretching;
Some choice of private schools;
Able to walk to school instead of drive;
Pretty town, aesthetically pleasing;
Refined feel to the area;
1 and a half hours commute to London.

Can anyone help me name this town? Or does it not exist? Thank you!

Is Sevenoaks too close to London?

mumeuro · 08/06/2012 16:42

didn't see your post Eeyore...

mumeuro · 08/06/2012 16:44

I think Colchester has good schools, the train to Liverpool Street takes about an hour...

diabolo · 08/06/2012 16:44

Bury St Edmunds?

Train from Cambridge or Stowmarket is less than 90 mins.

Pretty, upmarket, low crime rate, more affordable than Herts or Essex, good state schools, several independents.

mumeuro · 08/06/2012 16:44

or Canterbury?

mumeuro · 08/06/2012 16:45

I would definitely second Bury St Edmunds too, you are spoilt for choice, OP!

Kellamity · 08/06/2012 16:47

Chippenham or Corsham, close to Bath, lots of beautiful countryside, a choice of private schools, ofsted outstanding primary & secondary schools.

mummytime · 08/06/2012 16:47

Guildford if you have girls, or are willing for boys to commute to secondary.

madwomanintheattic · 08/06/2012 16:49

That's really funny, ghost. I spent 20 years in woodstock, and it didn't even cross my mind when I read the op! Grin ha! Not sure what that says, really. All in the eye of the beholder, I guess!

TheMonster · 08/06/2012 16:50

oh not Canterbury. Full of students.

Chubfuddler · 08/06/2012 16:50

I was just scrolling to add Chippenham or corsham and I've been beaten to it. Easy train journey to London, pretty good state schools, loads of prep schools, bear bath/Bristol/Marlborough for private secondaries. Property reasonable.

ghosteditor · 08/06/2012 16:57

Ha, mad, when you grow up where I did and accidentally end up living in Woodstock, it looks pretty desirable! I'm seeing a whole new side of it since my DC was born too - I love it here Wink

mrsbaffled · 08/06/2012 16:58

Aylesbury, Bucks (not refined throughout, but nice areas)

NarcolepsyQueen · 08/06/2012 17:01

Sevenoaks, or Amerham Old Town or Marlow

DukeHumfrey · 08/06/2012 17:03

Witney, Oxfordshire (train from Charlbury).

Chubfuddler · 08/06/2012 17:04

Or Tetbury (Kemble station to London) but its expensive. Ditto Stroud.

fallenangle · 08/06/2012 17:08

Newbury, Hungerford, Marlborough (have to drive to station) Haslemere, Godalming, Twyford, Pangbourne.

Sofiamum · 08/06/2012 17:56

Chelmsford, Essex.

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2012 18:01

What's your budet, style of house, number of bedrooms needed?

We can do all the Googling for you! Smile

LynetteScavo · 08/06/2012 18:01

That would be budget!

hels9 · 08/06/2012 18:45

Oh well, at least you didn't ask about her bidet.

Charl0tteBronteSaurus · 08/06/2012 18:48

Sevenoaks, assuming money not too much of an object

Worthing - not pretty in the town centre but maybe the sea makes up for that? Western suburbs very lovely, 3 outstanding primaries, 1h20ish to Victoria.

tiredteddy · 08/06/2012 19:02

Another vote for Dorking, it ticks all the boxes!
